Spring Training, Minor League, Mar 7, 2020

Activities started around 10:00 AM Saturday morning.  Players from major league camp came out and took BP on Ashburn Field.  Minor league catchers began their day with BP on Carlton Field.  I watched a little of each, waiting for some scheduled pitching on Roberts Field.  Victor Arano was first on the mound.  He threw a simulated inning, facing Cornelius Randolph and Matt Vierling twice each. Spring Training, Minor League, Full Squad

(Edited 3/6/2020 at 9:30 AM – Players on the roster whom I have actually seen in camp are noted  in bold red text. )

The Phillies began their minor league spring training on Wednesday with their full squad at 2:00 PM.  Position players trekked over to the fields at DiMaggio Park.  Catchers took BP on Carlton and Roberts Fields.  Afterward, they ran through several fielding drills – pop ups and throws to bases among others.  During these drills, 45 pitchers began stretching in the outfields.  Another 45 pitchers were on Schmidt preparing to throw from the Seven Mounds.  The pitchers on Carlton and Roberts were still running PFPs when I left at 4:30 PM.  I learned today that they were still on the fields at 5:00 PM. Roster Updates

With minor league spring training beginning this week, in addition to watching the players go through their drills, our attention will be diverted to the make up of the various work groups at the Complex.  With so many non-roster players (31) invited to major league spring training, group assignments will be somewhat meaningless. Open Discussion: Week of March 2nd

The Phillies bolted out to a 6-1-1 record in Grapefruit League games.  The play during the games is more important than the scores and victories.  More than 30 players from the minor league mini camp have been assigned to the games.  Those among them who have gotten playing time, as well as others of their minor league brethren who were among the non-roster invites have  acquitted themselves well. McCutchen Sidelined for Season Opener

Phillies’ manager Joe Girardi told reporters Saturday that Andrew McCutchen will start the season on the IL.  This allows a lot of conjecture on who the opening day left fielder will be and who will make the 26-man roster in his place. Continue reading McCutchen Sidelined for Season Opener

Open Discussion: Week of February 24th

Busy week.  Position players reported, and the first full squad workout was held last Monday.  J.T. Realmuto lost his arbitration case and settled for the $10M consolation prize.  He’ll likely make up the difference in his extension.  Hector Neris settled before his arb hearing for $4.6M.  The Phillies opened their Grapefruit League season in Lakeland and played to an 8-8 tie against the Tigers.  Several young Phillies’ prospects distinguished themselves in the game.  The Phils beat the Pirates in their home opener at Spectrum Field, and the team unveiled an awkward update of the Phanatic. Open Discussion: Week of February 17th

Day 4.  So, a Saturday schedule is the same as the week day schedule … this week.  Position players came out at 9:30 AM and after stretching, they started BP at 9:50 AM.  While the stretching was taking place on Ashburn Field, a group of pitchers came out on Rollins Field and went threw some of their non-throwing exercises.
