The next in the line of topics to discuss as the season approaches, I’m going to single out a few prospects that I feel are entering their make or break year. This is subjective, of course, some guys are just late bloomers, though many never bloom at all. I’m only going to highlight guys who need to be placed on the 40 man roster after 2010. Guys who will have at least one season left aren’t in danger so I’m not going to worry about those guys. College guys (19 and older) drafted in 2007 and prep players (18 and under) from the 2006 draft/international signing period are the guys we’re focusing on here. Check below for my list…
I meant to post this earlier today but haven’t had time, so this works for today/tomorrow. This is simple one, which prospect (ie, has prospect status under the MLB guidelines) will have the biggest impact on the big league club this season? I’ll include the realistic choices in the poll, as well as the OTHER option, if I’m missing someone you want to write in. Again, this isn’t the most improved prospect or anything, just the guy that will have the most positive impact/value at the big league level. Check below for the poll
Pablo Ozuna was released by the Phillies organization after serving his 50 game suspension for testing positive for a banned substance.
Brian Rosenberg made his AA debut on Friday evening and pitched two scoreless innings for Reading. Scott Mathieson followed that up with another scoreless inning of his own.
Down in Clearwater, friend of Phuture Phillies, Michael Schwimer has not given up an earned run in his last nine appearances, spanning 12 innings, He has struck out 18 during the same period.
Jason Knapp was listed as the #4 prospect in the Indian system, while Carlos Carrasco was ranked 10th by Jim Calis of Baseball America in his recent list of the Top 10 prospects in the Indians organization. Both Marson and Donald were not on the list.
Kyle Drabek went 5 innings and gave up 4 runs on 6 hits tonight against Binghamton. Here is one vote for shutting him down or significantly limiting his innings for the remainder of the year. He is currently at 140 IP.
Two more shutout innings in relief for Scott Mathieson last night, giving him 18 innings this year without having given up an earned run between Clearwater and Reading. He has allowed just 14 baserunners in those 18 innings and the opposition is hitting just .129 against him.
Tim Kennelly, who has struggled hitting since his recall to AA Reading had a big night last night going 3-4 to go along with Domonic Brown’s 2-4 performance which included his first AA homer. Continue reading Daily Discussion
The Phillies 6th round pick, Steven Inch has signed. Inch is a 18 year old RHP from Edmonton, Alberta and was at Citizens Bank Park last night.
In Lakewood last night, Matthew Way made his Class A debut and pitched well, going 7 innings and giving up just 1 earrned run, while striking out 9. Anthony Gose stole his 59th and 60th bases for the BlueClaws. Jason Knapp returned to Lakewood as a member of Lake County, but is still on the DL and won’t pitch this series.
In the 20 run effort by Williamsport last night both Anthony Hewitt (3-5,3r, hr, 3rbi) and Zach Collier (4-6, 2r- 3b, 4RBI) had very impressive nights. Josh Zeid (4-3) threw 6 shutout innings.
Jason Anderson’s efforts in relief for Lehigh Valley deserve note. In 26 appearances the 30 year old Anderson has gone 0-1 with a 2.41 ERA and 4 saves. Opponents are hitting just .192 against him , .172 with RISP. His WHIP is 0.93 for Lehigh Valley. In his last 10 appearances, he gave up runs on only one occasion for a 1.46 ERA.
Down in Lakewood, the Phils 5th round draft pick, Matthew Way , will be called up to start Tuesday nights game. Way has been fairly dominant for Williamsport with a 1.67 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 37.2 innings pitched.
Zach Collier hit his first professional homerun in the WIlliamsport win on Sunday evening. Collier was 3-4 with 4 runs scored and the homer. Sebastian Valle also had 4 RBI’s in the Crosscutter win.
Dominic Brown was 2-7 in his first couple of games for Reading while Mike Cisco gave up 3 ER over 6 innings in his first AA start.
Quintin Berry continues doing all that is asked of him in Reading with his .279 average, 39 stolen bases and 69 runs scored. Berry, 24, was the Phils 5th round draft choice in the 2006 draft.
The Phillies 2007 first round draft choice, Joe Savery, was called up from AA Reading to take a place in the Lehigh Valley rotation. Savery, 23, was taken 19th overall of the 2007 draft out of Rice University with the 19th pick in the draft. After a dominant first half of the year, during which he went 12-1, Savery has struggled during his last several outings, going 1-3 with a 8.71 ERA in his last 4 starts. On the year, Savery is 12-4 with a 4.41 ERA in 21 starts. He has walked 53 and struck out 77 in his 112.1 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .262 against him (just .183 with RISP) and he has given up 13 home run balls. Continue reading Daily Discussion, Savery Called Up to AAA
In his last 3 starts, Vance Worley is 0-3, with a 18.00 ERA (26 ER in 13 IP) You have to wonder if the long minor league season is starting to get to Worley of if he is injured. While Worley is struggling, Mike Stutes is bouncing back from recent struggles in Reading and he has gone 3-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his last three starts. After some mid year bumps in the road, Stutes is at 8-5 with a 3.71 ERA on the year.
Reliever Chance Chapman has not allowed an earned run in his last 10 outings for Reading.
A few tidbits to get it going:
Jason Knapp has begun a throwing program in Lakewood, in hopes of returning over the next couple of weeks. He last pitched July 11, before being placed on the disabled list.
Kyle Drabek, coming back from one of his few bad starts, was a small notch below dominant last night, going 8 innings and giving up just 2 runs on 6 hits. He walked one and struck out 7. Neil Sellers continued raking for Reading, hitting his 10th homer of the year, while raising his average to .322 with another multi hit game. Continue reading Daily Discussion
