The Phillies bolted out to a 6-1-1 record in Grapefruit League games. The play during the games is more important than the scores and victories. More than 30 players from the minor league mini camp have been assigned to the games. Those among them who have gotten playing time, as well as others of their minor league brethren who were among the non-roster invites have acquitted themselves well. Busy week. Position players reported, and the first full squad workout was held last Monday. J.T. Realmuto lost his arbitration case and settled for the $10M consolation prize. He’ll likely make up the difference in his extension. Hector Neris settled before his arb hearing for $4.6M. The Phillies opened their Grapefruit League season in Lakeland and played to an 8-8 tie against the Tigers. Several young Phillies’ prospects distinguished themselves in the game. The Phils beat the Pirates in their home opener at Spectrum Field, and the team unveiled an awkward update of the Phanatic. Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of February 24th

Day 3. Happy Valentines’s Day, y’all. I arrived at the Complex at 8:30 AM. Learned that the position players would come out at 9:50 AM and that the minor league mini-camp was moving back to the Complex with a 1:00 PM start.
While mingling with security and the other early arrivals, I could see a group of pitchers on Rollins Field going through their towel throwing exercise. A short time later the early reporting position players came out of the club house and began stretching in left field on Ashburn Field. Day 2. I arrived at the Complex at 8:30 AM. Earlier than the workouts were scheduled to start, but last year the coaches had players out as early as 8:00 AM and sometimes earlier on the half-field in front of Spectrum Field. A field I used to refer to as Bowa Field, but which I have recently started referring to as Rollins Field. Continue reading Spring Training, Pitchers and Catchers, 2/13/2020

Today marked the beginning of my ninth Philiies’ spring training. Pitchers and catchers were scheduled to come out at 11:00 AM, so I was there at 9:00 AM.
Since a lot of position players were among the early reports, they came out at 9:30 AM and performed their stretching exercises before breaking up on Ashburn, Schmidt, and Roberts Fields for BP. The groups batted for about 15 minutes and had coaches and instructors on each field. Continue reading Spring Training, Pitchers and Catchers, 2/12/2020
