Threshers; June 16, 2014

Roman Quinn’s long-awaited debut in center field was delayed an additional 53 minutes tonight due to rain.  However, once the game started, he did not have to wait long for his chance.  The Lakeland Flying Tigers’ Chad Wright drove Ryan Demmin’s second pitch hard into the left-center field gap.  Quinn closed ground with a nice, easy gait and caught the ball in front of the warning track. Threshers; June 10, 2014

The rain I joked was scheduled for Wednesday arrived early.  The game with the Tampa Yankees was delayed after 4.5 innings.  Miguel Nunez had pitched a solid 5 innings allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, 5 strike outs, and 1 earned run on a home run to right that would have been a routine fly ball 2 innings later when the weather moved in.   The offense attacked early.  Roman Quinn opened with a ground ball double down the left field line that kicked off the stands.  He scored on a KC Serna single.  Brandon Short followed with a single, but the Threshers could do no further damage.  The Threshers collected hits in each of the next 3 innings, getting the lead off hitter on in 2 of them.  But in spite of singles by Brian Pointer, Angelo Mora, and Chris Serritella, the Threshers were unable to score.  When the heavy rain and lightning caused the umpires to clear the field, the score was knotted at one apiece.

During the break in the action, I went hunting.  Before the game, the PR Director had told me that  at least 8 draftees were in town, but he hadn’t been told who.   Continue reading Threshers; June 10, 2014

Final Practice; June 10, 2014

A truck was backed up to the doors of the Carpenter Complex.  Bags were being loaded even as the last intrasquad was being played.  This afternoon the truck will head for the airport to begin the long trip to Williamsport.

They only played 5.5 innings today.  Six pitchers made brief appearances.  The most notable was Brody Colvin.  The former member of the “baby aces” was hit around in 1.1 innings, giving up 5 hits and 4 runs, 3 earned.  Continue reading Final Practice; June 10, 2014

Intrasquad Game in Clearwater; June 9, 2014

I received a text from a friend this morning alerting me to an intrasquad game at the Carpenter Complex.  The same friend picked me up and we went to the fields.  We were immediately rewarded when Zach Green came out of the clubhouse in uniform spikes.  It got better when Cody Asche came out in uniform, too.  Jackpot! Continue reading Intrasquad Game in Clearwater; June 9, 2014

Threshers; June 8, 2014

We’ve all heard the term “a heartbreaking loss”. Well, if there is such a thing as a “heartbreaking win”, the Threshers put their fans through one this afternoon. Actually, heart wrenching or gut wrenching are probably better descriptive terms

The Threshers hitters were facing a young hurler making his Florida State League debut for the Daytona Cubs. Right hander, Justin Amlung, was 4-0 with an ERA of 1.54 with Kane County in A ball. It seems that most of the games I cover, the Threshers run into guys with sub 3.00 ERAs who shut them down, or plus 4.00 ERAs who pitch their game of the season. Not today. XST; June 4, 2014

Today’s games with the Pirates began at 10:00AM. While waiting for the Williamsport squad to take the field, I saw Zach Green in uniform.  I followed him over to Roberts Field.  After determining that he wasn’t playing the field, I headed back to Ashburn Field.  Ricardo Pinto started and threw 6 great innings. While over at Roberts, I missed the first batter he faced. When I got back to Ashburn, there was a runner on second; he scored with two outs on a throwing error by Jan Hernandez. Pinto picked the runner off second to end the inning. Over the remaining 5 innings, Pinto allowed 2 walks and a hit batter. He also picked a runner off first base. So, depending on how the first batter reached base, I saw either a no or one hitter over 6 innings. He also struck out 6 batters. Continue reading XST; June 4, 2014

Threshers; June 3, 2014

There were a few more roster moves before tonight’s game.

  • Herlis Rodriguez assigned to XST.
  • Justin Parr assigned to Clearwater from XST.
  • Shawn Camp promoted to Lehigh Valley.
  • Pete Lavin promoted to Reading.
  • Anthony Hewitt assigned to Clearwater from Reading.

I don’t know what is normal for an affiliate, but the Threshers have 86 transactions.  By comparison, the Bradenton Marauders pre-game fact sheet lists 25 as of June 1st.  So, 86 seems a little high to me.  And there should be more in the next couple weeks if signed draft picks are assigned, if anyone is promoted from Lakewood, if anymore are demoted from Reading, and if anyone is released to make room for signed draft picks. XST and Threshers; June 2, 2014

The XST games had been moved up from their 1:00PM start to noon, so when I arrived they were just completing the 2nd inning. As I walked up to the Williamsport game, Justin Parr was completing his AB, working a walk. Nick Ferdinand followed with a perfectly executed hit-and-run. Then the Yankees “rolled” the inning. I overheard one of the Yankee pitching coaches remark that the pitcher had thrown too many 3-2 counts.  Apparently, it was “Take a Pitch Day”. Most of the Williamsport batters were working deep counts, even guys who usually hack at the first pitch.

Feliberto Sanchez pitched 6 innings. Continue reading XST and Threshers; June 2, 2014

Threshers; June 1, 2014

We were treated to another pitchers’ duel today. Ethan Stewart and Bradenton’s Jason Creasy battled for 6 innings. Stewart blinked first allowing a 5th inning run. They completed the 6th inning with the Marauders protecting a 1-0 lead.  After a short rain delay, the bullpens took over. Both pens combined to allow 6 runs in the 7th inning.  They settled down and closed out the final two innings without any further scoring.

Ethan Stewart pitched a tough, gritty 6 innings. Continue reading Threshers; June 1, 2014

Threshers; May 31, 2014

Tonight, over 5,000 people were treated to an old fashioned pitchers’ duel. Left-handed Orlando Castro of the Bradenton Marauders held the Threshers to 3 hits and 1 run in his 6 innings. He was bested by Miguel Nunez who allowed 3 hits in 6 scoreless innings. The Bullpens matched goose eggs and the Threshers made a first inning run by Roman Quinn hold up.
