Seven Phillies Prospects Attending 2015 AFL

The Phillies have announced the organization’s participants in the Arizona Fall League for 2015.

  • J.P. Crawford
  • Andrew Knapp
  • Dylan Cozens
  • Tom Windle
  • Nick Pivetta
  • Edubray Ramos
  • Yacksel Rios

The players will be part of the Glendale Desert Dogs.  The team will be made up of prospects from five teams.  The other four teams are the Astros, Dodgers, Pirates, and White Sox.  Todd Zolecki reported this story earlier today.

Lakewood’s Nelson Prada is attending as the hitting coach.  The Desert Dogs full roster is listed here.

The eligibility rules to play in the AFL are listed below.

The roster size is 30 players per team.

Each Major League organization is required to provide six players subject to the following requirements:

  • All Triple-A and Double-A players are eligible, provided the players are on at least a Double-A level roster no later than Aug. 1.
  • One player below the Double-A level is allowed per Major League team. (editor’s note: I believe this was expanded to two players last year.  That would explain why Rios and Cozens can both be attend as “below AA players on August 1st.)
  • One foreign player is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter league.
  • No players with more than one year of credited Major League service as of August 31 are eligible, except a team may select one player picked in the most recently concluded Major League Rule 5 Draft.
  • To be eligible, players on Minor League disabled lists must be activated at least 45 days before the conclusion of their respective seasons.

Clearwater (77-57) split a double header with the Daytona Tortugas, winning 3-2 and losing 3-0.  Victor Arano and Matt Imhof got the starts.  Ricardo Pinto was pushed back to Thursday in Dunedin.  That could make him available for game two in the first round of the playoffs.

Game one went eight innings.  Arano started and pitched out of minor jams in the second and third before wriggling out of a lead off triple in the fourth.  The Tortugas finally got to him with a game-tying, two-run home run in the fifth.  Alberto Tirado pitched around two walks in two hitless innings.  Jesen Therrien picked up his third save with two strike outs in a perfect eighth.  The Threshers missed a bigger inning when they scored a run on a bases loaded double play in the first.  Rhys Hoskins provided a two-run lead with a solo home run (8) in the fourth.  Malquin Canelo provided the game winner on a solo home run (2) in the eighth. Open Discussion: Week of August 31st

Here’s an open discussion thread so the minor league posts don’t get cluttered with Phillies’ talk and other topics.

  • The play of the young guys.
  • The chase for the #1 pick.
  • Or, anything else …

Box Score Recap – 8/30/2015

Lehigh Valley (61-75) held the Syracuse Chiefs to two hits and won 3-1.  Sean O’Sullivan pitched six innings of one-hit ball.  He gave up one run, walked five, and struck out eight. Colton Murray Murray struck out three in two, no-hit innings.  Dustin McGowan allowed one hit and picked up his 14th save.   Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/30/2015 →

GCL Phillies (36-24) closed out their season with a 5-0 victory over the GCL Blue Jays. Jorge Alfaro started as the designated hitter after playing the field in short, three-inning stints the previous two games.  He drove an RBI double deep into the left center field gap. Halfway to second base, he began limping, signalling to the bench, and pointing to his thigh.  He immediately walked off the field and was replaced with a pinch runner.  He did not appear to receive any treatment by the trainer and milled about for a couple innings. He even signed a few autographs before leaving with the trainer around the third inning.

Cornelius Randolph was not in the line up again.  He hasn’t been on the field since the seventh inning of Thursday’s game when he gave way to a defensive replacement in the bottom of the inning.  Randolph had tripled and scored on a sac fly before leaving the game.  I spoke with “C” as he and Reggie Wilson walked to the team bus.  He has been kept out of the line up as a precaution.  His shoulder was a little tender after the slide at the end of that triple.  He feels fine and will be ready for Instructs next month.

Wilson said he was signed to a 2016 contract because the Phillies had 10 outfielders at the Complex when he was drafted.  I would assume the same applied to Ben Pelletier. By the time they signed and the roster for Williamsport was set, there were still six outfielders in Clearwater (Alastre, Luis, Martelo, Pickett, Randolph, and Reyes) and not enough innings or at bats to go around. GCL Phillies (35-24) lost to the GCL Blue Jays7-4.  Adonis Medina gave up four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings.  He walked two and struck out six.  Kevin Walsh stranded two inherited runners but couldn’t recover from a fielding error the following inning and gave up two unearned runs.  Will Stewart came in with the bases loaded and stranded all three runners.  Ryne Frankoff struck out two in the final inning.

The Phillies scored a run in the fifth on Jonathan Arauz’ RBI single.  They added three late runs in the eighth inning on Luke Williams’ RBI double, Juan Luis’ sac fly, and a fielding error. Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/28/2015 →

The biggest news today will probably be C Jorge Alfaro made his first appearance since joining the Phillies organization as a key piece of the Colbert Hamels trade.  Alfaro hadn’t played since June 12th when he was lifted for a pinch runner and limped from the field. He was diagnosed with a “significant left ankle injury” and the Rangers were resigned to his being “out for some meaningful time”, possibly the rest of the season. GCL Phillies (34-23) were officially eliminated from the playoffs before the first pitch of their game against the Pirates when the Blue Jays won the first game of a double header versus the Yankees1 this morning.

Bailey Falter (3.45) pitched five solid innings in his start against the Pirates.  He allowed lead off singles in each of the first three innings and pitched out of the difficulty all three times. Those were the only three base runners Falter allowed.   Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/26/2015 →

Clearwater (73-56) lost to the Daytona Tortugas 2-0.  John Richy pitched well in his Clearwater debut.  In seven innings, he allowed only  six base runners on four hits, a walk, and a hit batter.  He struck out three.  The only trouble he seemed to have was on the two errors he committed on pickoff throws to first.  Let’s hope that is something that will get better as he gains familiarity with Rhys Hoskins at first.  He showed a high 80s fastball and looked good overall.  Yacksel Rios didn’t.  He allowd the first batters to reach in both of his innings and couldn’t prevent them from scoring.  A game that moved along at a decent pace bogged down with Rios on the mound.  He gave up two hits and a walk.  The only stolen base came with him on the mound.
