2017 Spring Training, 3/24

Wednesday was a camp day.  The intrasquad games were moved up to 11:45 and almost over when I got to the Complex at 12:45.  So, I went to Legends with a friend and talked baseball while watching the Phillies and Yankees game.  When I got home, I saw the announcement about Dallas Green’s passing.  I didn’t feel like writing, so I dusted off the Pace of Play article that had been sitting in queue for a couple weeks. Pace of Play Editorial

Several weeks ago we conducted a poll on Pace of Play.  Around the time that I ran the poll, there was a lot of sentiment both for and against changes that might address the perceived slow pace of play in major league games. Continue reading Pace of Play Editorial

2017 Spring Training, 3/21

Full day at the Complex.  Groups 3 and 4 squared off against the Braves and Group 5 faced SFWL (South Florida Winter League), a team comprised of players released by organizations (and managed by former MLB infielder Hal Lanier) but still hoping to keep their dreams alive. Their age range is 22-28 putting our kids at a slight disadvantage. Continue reading 2017 Spring Training, 3/21

2017 Spring Training, 3/20

Groups 1 and 2 faced the Pirates at the Complex.  Groups 3 and 4 made the bus trip to Bradenton.  Group 5 had the afternoon off.  This was disappointing as I had intended to spend the afternoon watching their game. Continue reading 2017 Spring Training, 3/20

Open Discussion: Week of March 20th

The Phillies managed to win just one game last week.  After twenty-four games, the Phillies have an 9-12-3 Grapefruit League record.  Their week of futility culminated in an 8-0 loss to the Rays where they faced a perfect game for 7.1 innings.   Continue reading Open Discussion: Week of March 20th

Groups 3 and 4 faced the Yankees at the Complex today.  The work groups published yesterday have changed or are just a suggestion from day to day.  The group 3 line up consisted of catcher Cabral, infielders D. Duran, infielders Wojciechowski, Brito, Gamboa, Stobbe, outfielders Alastre, Moniak, Maglich, and DH N. Martinez and Matos. Continue reading 2017 Spring Training, 3/18

2017 Spring Training, 3/17

On Saint Patrick’s Day the Philies started a three-game home stand at Spectrum Field.  A half dozen players were sent to the minor league.  And an updated list of the minor league groups was available.  After the Phillies game another player was sent down. Open Discussion: Week of March 13th

The Phillies split six games this past week in Florida.  After seventeen games, the Phillies have an 8-7-2 Grapefruit League record.  But, record isn’t a legitimate indicator to measure the team’s progress.  After all, the Phillies posted a National League third best 15-11-3 record last spring and still managed to finish 20 games under .500 during the regular season.
