2017 Schedules, Observations, and Rumors

Here is a consolidated schedule of all games for the organization’s stateside teams.  In the photo below, the action of every org team is listed for any given date, including the Phillies. The far right column lists the game times and location for Extended Spring games.  In June, the column deftly switches to Gulf Coast League games.  I attached the month of April just for explanation.  All six months are listed below as URLs.

Tuesday, I watched Roly de Armas work a group of players that could become most of his GCL squad.  It included several new players who arrived Monday from the Dominican Academy.  Pat Borders’ Williamsport squad worked out on a back field and were inaccessible for even casual viewing.  Although, it is hard to miss Kyle Young.

Observation:  The young group of middle infielders looked very smooth during infield practice.  And, if I haven’t written this before, Greg Pickett has incredible power.

Roly’s group included (italics indicate new players)-

  • Catchers – Juan Aparicio, Lenin Rodriguez, and Rafael Marchan;
  • Corner Infielders – Greg Pickett, Edwin Rodriguez, and Keudy Bocio;
  • Middle Infielders – Nicolas Torres, Brayan Gonzalez, Jesus Henriquez, Jose Tortolero, and Christian Valerio;
  • Outfielders – Simon Muzziotti, Juan Alastre, and Ben Pelletier;
  • Pitchers – Gustavo Armas, Rafael Carvajal, Jesus de los Santos, Oscar Marcelino, Denny Martinez, Orestes Melendez, Francisco Morales, Sandro Rosario, Manuel Silva, Victor Sobil, Juan Santos, Anton Kuznetsov, Leonel Aponte, Jhordany Mezquita, Jean Carlos Valdez, and Robinson Martinez.

An extended roster will be available shortly.  There may be more new players than the eleven listed above.  A player’s presence in extended does not guarantee that he will make one of the Rookie team rosters which are allowed to include 35 players.  It is not unusual for players to be sent back to the DSL to play everyday.  Remember that twenty-plus players will join the organization this summer after the Amateur Draft.

Opinion:  The inclusion of Pickett in the GCL group is not surprising.  He has had only 84 at bats in the GCL since signing after the 2015 draft, zero at bats in 2016.  He is also undergoing a position change from outfield to first base.  The kid has displayed awesome power this spring.  I spoke with him early in camp, and he said his knees feel great.  He looks to be growing more comfortable at first base.

Tuesday night the Threshers played a scrimmage against the BlueClaws.  Lakewood won 4-1.  Darrick Hall crushed a double off the fence above the padding in right center field that drove in the game’s first run for Lakewood.    Alex Wojciechowski lined a three-run homer into the Tiki Terrace to extend Lakewood’s lead to four runs.  Jan Hernandez smoked a ball onto the left field berm in the ninth to notch Clearwater’s only run and to provide the final margin.

Lakewood’s Nick Fanti pitched three innings (2nd thru 4th) and allowed a couple hits and got a couple Ks.  All other pitchers for both teams threw one inning.  Sixto Sanchez and Franklyn Kilome who are both likely to pitch in Friday’s games charted pitches with Seranthony Dominguez and Felix Paulino.

Clearwater managed eight hits during the game.  Their pitchers held Lakewood to two hits. But Hall’s double drove in a runner who had reached on an error, and Wojo’s HR came after two walks.

Zach Eflin is rumored to be pitching the season opener for Clearwater in a rehab appearance.  Jake Thompson (LHV), Tom Eshelman (REA), and JoJo Romero (LAK) are pitching the openers for the rest of the affiliates.

I spoke briefly with Jimy Williams who was there to watch his son Shawn manage his first game in Spectrum Field as the Threshers’ skipper.  How cool is that.

  1. Jim,
    re: .Bailey Falter’s assignment to Williamsport.
    Is that an administrative assignment so he needs more work in EST, or is there an ailment of sorts that will need monitoring and some rehab?

    1. Romus, Lakewood rosters are up to 35 but only 25 active for a game. It could be a “paper” move. Williamsport’s roster could just be a Holding spot until its roster is finalized in June. And it would have a quicker turn around than the 7-day DL which would carry a minimum stay of 7 days.

      However, nothing is ever that simple. Falter started the scrimmage Tuesday night. He pitched one inning and was followed by Fanti who pitched three. Then 5 relievers who pitched one inning each. The transaction made me wonder if Falter tweaked something and had his appearance shortened.

      I’m headed over to the Complex to see if I can learn anything.

  2. Jim, what does the Featherston release do to the Pigs roster? Does Kingery now make the jump to AAA? Barbier going to Williamsport? Does this give Stobbe and opening in Lakewood?

    1. Featherston must have asked for his release when he found out we wasn’t starting. No, there’s zero chance Kingery goes up now. That spot will go to someone like Mora. As for the A ball guy, I don’t think they want Stobbe not playing every day so I doubt very much he goes up.

    2. Featherston is still on the IronPigs roster. The Baseball America report is for the period March 25-31. It’s possible that Featherston was released and re-signed after the reporting period and before the IronPigs released their roster.

      The organization, MLB, and MiLB have been slow reporting transactions this year, especially if a player’s release is involved.

  3. Are Tyler Hallead, Grant Dyer, Jake Kelzer, Alex Kline and Julian Garcia still with the org?

    1. Hallead, Kelzer, Kline, and Garcia are all in XST, likely to be part of the Williamsport roster when that seasonn starts. I believe Dyer is injured and will likely show up on the Lakewood DL.

      1. Thanks! I’m from that area so I was curious as to what was going on with like 1/2 the pitching staff from last season.

  4. WOW Phinally released Featherston … hope we gave him a Bronzed Glove like the real one he used in the game!!!
