Check this spot and I’ll try and post any Phillies relevant gossip that comes up on who may or may not get to the Phillies at #27. Frankie Pilliere at AOL Fanhouse indicates the Brewers are going to take Jesse Biddle at #14 overall, which would be quite a leap of faith. In another strange one, Pilliere has Austin Wilson going to Toronto at #11. I’m not buying that one either.

It looks like he’s a bit more over the top than he was before the surgery, but he’s much more under control here and his delivery seems less violent. Its going to take him time to rebuild his arm strength and come all the way back, but his delivery looks good.
To my untrained eye, I’m not a fan of the stabbing motion he makes with his arm before he comes toward the plate.
He has a bunch of moving parts and a big leg kick that serves as his timing mechanism, and I have a feeling that as he learns to repeat his swing mechanics more, and is able to maintain his timing, that he’s going to hit because he has strong wrists. But when he gets out of sync, its easy to see why he might struggle.

June 4 Discussion posting
Before we get to the specifics, a quick programming alert. I’m probably not going to write any more long postings on the draft, since I’ve already kind of said my piece, and picking at 27, its a crapshoot as to who is available anyway. I’ll try and check this weekend if there are any more pieces to make mention of with regard to specific names. At this point, I should be able to do a live update for Round 1 on Monday night, with some instant feedback, but I doubt I’ll be able to update things Tuesday during the day. But I’ll try and work something out to make sure we have some real time coverage of the draft.
Now, onto last night’s action..
Jayson Stark on Jon Singleton
Jayson Stark was on 97.5 yesterday and at the end of his interview, he started to talk about Jon Singleton. And lets just say he had lots of good things to say about him. You know how Stark can get when talking about the Phillies, so maybe take it with a pinch of salt, but its pretty impressive that Singleton is already on the national radar. Check out the audio here. Hat tip to “Mark” for passing this one along.

The draft is a few days away
I’ve gotten a number of emails asking when I was going to write about the draft. I’ve tried to incorporate draft talk into my weekly notes column, and I’ve shared some thoughts here and here. I also wrote a lengthy piece on ways to fix the draft, which you can find here, and I shared some initial thoughts on this year’s draft in a longer piece which you can find here. So that’s everything I’ve written about the draft so far. But as we’re getting closer, I figured I should maybe add a bit more. So check below…
May 28th discussion posting
Just a brief note before we get to the scores. I won’t be writing my weekly notes column this week. But I am going to try and write up a long piece on the draft this weekend, what I expect from the Phillies, etc etc. Look for that on Sunday or Monday, maybe Tuesday.
Now the box scores
Lehigh Valley loses 3-2.
Reading game was suspended.
Clearwater lost 11-2.
Lakewood game was suspended
May 27th Open Discussion
Last night’s scores, and then lots of nonsensical banter about Cliff Lee.
Reading wins 5-3.
Worley with another solid start. Rizzotti 3/5 with 2 more HR
Clearwater wins 13-8.
JC Ramirez is back. 8 K and 0 BB are the key numbers for me, don’t care much about the 4 ER.
Overbeck with #11.
Lakewood wins 11-10.
Sleeper Julio Rodriguez with his debut. Lots of pitches, a few runs, but 6 K in 3.2 IP is at least promising.
Singleton mania
Sweeping the nation. Kevin Goldstein at BP gives Singleton a little love in his daily posting.
An 8th-round pick last year out of a Southern California high school, Singleton had classic first base tools, including plenty of raw power, but also enough hitting mechanics to project as a high-average hitter, but he was also seen as extremely raw. A surprisingly good debut last year excited the Phillies, and after spending the first part of the year in extended spring training, the team opted to test him at Low-A instead of the New York-Penn League, and he’s responded by going 19-for-44 (.432) with 34 total bases in his first 13 games. There’s explosive potential here.
To balance out this love, he gives a pessimistic assessment of the 3 guys we received for Cliff Lee. To sum up his points, basically none of the 3 have gotten off to awesome starts. Aumont’s velo is down with his new mechanics, Gillies has been hurt, and Ramirez still hasn’t shown much progress with his secondary pitches. All are valid concerns, but in the case of all three, I’m going to give them the rest of the year before drawing conclusions, for various reasons.
