Wow, what a day. If you’re a regular here, you know draft time is my fav time of the year. For me, the draft is a lot like Christmas, or your birthday. You get lots of presents (new prospects), you like some of them more than others, but they give you something to talk about and obsess over. I’ve written a lot of words over the last few weeks leading up to the draft, and I’m going to write more now, and then again this weekend after the dust has settled, before tying a big bow on things in August when the signing deadline passes. I’m going to give quick reactions and notes on the guys taken, but before I get to that, I’m going to go a bit philosophical, because I think what I want to say might explain some things, or at the very least, give you something else to think about. Before I do that, a HUGE thank you to Dave and Ryan for updating the picks this afternoon, and Ketch for providing instant reports in the comments. Amazing work. Now, let’s get started

A big huge thank you
I wanted to put this here as well, because it deserves its own mention. A huge thank you to everyone who visited today, and more importantly, a big thank you to Dave, Ryan, Ketch and everyone else who posted updated information as the draft was happening. Today is now officially the busiest day in the site’s history, with over 40,000 hits in the books. Again, just a huge thank you for the constant support and for giving me an audience to share my thoughts with.
2011 MLB Draft, Day 2
With one pick in the book, the Phillies will make 2 picks in Round 2, and then one pick each in R3 through 30, and then 31-50 tomorrow.
Dave is going to help keep the pick register updated, and I will fill in any blanks when I get home from work. If you can find links/reports/videos of the guys taken, please do post them in the comments to make my life easier. If you want to discuss our first round pick, please do so in the dedicated post to that pick. Upward and onward.

2011 MLB Draft Day 1 wrap-up
I wanted to make this its own post.
The Larry Greene writeup is posted, with profiles and videos. Discuss that pick there, post any more info you find, etc etc.
Tomorrow is Day 2 of 3, with rounds 2-30. The Phillies pick 2 times in RD 2, and then once in each round thereafter. Dave will be updating picks tomorrow during the day, as I will be off the grid all day, and I will have a long writeup tomorrow night with info on all of the guys taken in R2-30.
Check below the fold for more info
Phillies select outfield prospect Larry Greene Jr
There you go.
I’ll have plenty of info in this spot momentarily.
Alright, so here’s the info.
Keith Law Rank: 57th
BA Rank: 75th
The scouting report is simple. He has the most power of any high school prospect in the draft. At 6’1/230, he’s already massive, and can hit a baseball a really long way. Defensively, he’s a LF guy at this point with scouts thinking he might have to move to 1B eventually. He hasn’t played against a ton of great competition, but hes coming from Georgia, so its not like he’s from Wyoming where they have no high school baseball. As you know by now, the Phillies generally look for elite tools, normally they go for all around tools packages, especially guys with speed. Greene is the complete opposite, as his value is basically tied to his power. But that power could be really special, like, 40 HR power special. The system lacks legit power prospects, and Greene certainly fits the bill there. The Phillies obviously believe he can play LF, and that he can make contact and make adjustments. Can he? We’ll see.
Not a crazy reach, and he helps fill the “power void” in the system. He wasn’t on my list of guys, or the list I was given, but I actually kind of like the pick. Even if he ends up just a big slugging LF, there’s tons of value there. He will likely sign for slot relatively soon and get some GCL time. If you want the Phillies to gamble, they can do that tomorrow.
In Keith Law’s first mock draft, he had Larry Greene going to STL at #22
Larry Greene, OF, Berrien County HS (Nashville, Ga.)
I’ve heard the Cardinals and the Nationals are all over Greene, who may have as much raw power as anyone in the draft.

2011 MLB Draft, Day 1 Post
Well kids, its here, one of my favorite days of the year. The Phillies do not have a first round pick, but they do pick in the compensation round and then have 2 picks in the 2nd round, which will start tomorrow. MLB Network will provide some kind of coverage tonight, which I’m sure will disappoint. Last year, the real draft expert Jim Callis barely got a word in while guys who have no clue who these prospects are talked for the duration of the show. I’m sure it will be more of the same this year, but lets be real, we’re all going to watch. Coverage starts at 6PM EDT, but I believe that is just the preview, as the actual draft starts at 7PM. Post all of your rumors and last minute wishes here. I stated my preference in yesterday’s notebook, but in case you don’t want to re-read it, my “wishlist” for pick #39 is
1. Tyler Goeddel, 3B/OF (St. Francis HS, CA)
2. Jackie Bradley Jr, OF (South Carolina)
3. Andrew Chafin, LHP (Kent State)
4. Nick Delmonico, INF (Farragut HS, TN)
5. Trevor Story, SS (Irving HS, TX)
It should be fun. It always is.

Box Score Recap, Weekend Edition
Sorry, I’ve been occupied with other things. All the box scores from FRI-SAT-SUN are below
2011 MLB Draft Notebook v4.0
Well, its almost here. Which means I have to finish all of my last minute prep work. In my second draft notebook, I tried to go over why focusing only on spending was dangerous and a lot of people still didn’t buy it, and intimated that you only get talent in the draft by paying over the odds. So I’m going to attempt to do one more study and look at the draft from the pre-draft rankings side of things. I’m also going to recap the guys I’ve already highlighted, and then give thoughts on a few more guys who might be there at 39, as well as some wishlist guys for our 2nd round picks. On Monday night, I’ll have analysis of our sandwich round pick. On Tuesday, we’ll make sure the picks are updated during the day, and then I’ll do a long writeup Tuesday night with initial thoughts. I’ll be updating things on Wednesday, and then do a recap Wednesday night with my thoughts on the draft as a whole. Then we have to wait till the signing deadline arrives to put a bow on the whole thing. So, let’s get started.
Singleton moving back to 1B…for now
So this is the word. I have two really quick thoughts on this:
* He’s 19. He has plenty of time. Even with his slow start and the ankle injury (which didn’t help the slow start), he’s one of the youngest players in the FSL. He has all kinds of time, and this includes learning the outfield. If playing 1B for 2 months or even the rest of the year helps his ankle heal and gets him on track, fine.
* If his future is in Philadelphia, he’s eventually going to have to learn to play LF, because he’s not displacing Ryan Howard at 1B, and no one is taking Ryan Howard’s contract. Unless salaries inflate beyond belief over the next 3 years. But that’s a decision for 2-3 years down the road.
In the meantime, everyone take a deep breath on Singleton and relax. Time is on his side, yes it is.
2011 MLB Draft Notebook, v 3.0
With today’s article by Jim Salisbury, highlighting a number of guys the Phillies have expressed interest in, I figured now was as good a time as any to post my thoughts on these guys. I’m hoping Jim has another article this weekend with some last minute thoughts on who the Phillies are narrowing in on even further, as he’s in a class by himself when it comes to draft matters as they impact the Phillies. I’ll definitely have something else up this weekend, and then we’ll tune in Monday night to see the compensation round, and then rounds 2-30 on Tuesday, which I will be providing coverage for, and rounds 31-50, which Ryan will be helping with. The draft is always one of the busiest times of the year for the site here, and I’m grateful for all of my visitors, those who care about the draft and those who don’t just the same. In case you’ve missed it, v1.0 of my notebook is here and v2.0 is here. Now, 3.0 commences below the fold.
