Here is a list of all the transactions that occurred in June plus 3 international free agent signings that were finally reported from April and May.
There are well over 200 transactions. The count is so high because the rosters for the FCL Phillies (15 players on June 6th), DSL Phillies Red (22 players on June 4th), and DSL Phillies White (23 players on June 5th) were announced on successive days. All but two of this period’s signed international free agents have been assigned to a team.
During the month of June, Roman Quinn was DFA-ed and elected free agency (subsequently signed by the KC Royals and batting .176 with 3 BB and 9 K in 21 PA for their Triple-A affiliate in Omaha), Austin Wynns (SF for LHP Michael PLassmeyer and $) and James Norwood (Boston for $), and released Ethan Evanko, Edward Barboza, Michael Mariot, Austin Ross, Kyle Dohy, and Dillon Maples.

Congrats to long ball Hall! Nice to see prospects called up. Even better to see them taste some success. Maybe Hall is a flash in a pan maybe he carves out a long career – either way, he will never forget his first few games. Love to see it
Amen, the kid appears to have a great, upbeat personality. You never know what the future holds but I’m just happy he’s getting an opportunity. I feel like the organization in the past has hesitated to give guys chances to get called up and even if they do, they bat 8th when they rarely play. Thomson’s approach to play the kids, and in this case bay him 4th, is VERY refreshing.
The Phillies will only call up prospects IF they can help the team AND if there’s an opening. Not all prospects will be called up. Yes, it’s unfair sometimes but baseball is unfair. Hall is having his opportunity now and we’ll see what happens. To say that the Phillies “has hesitated to give guys chances” is not correct. In recent memory, the Philies have given opportunities to:
Stott
Vierling
Moniak
Muzziotti
Maton
Morales
Marchan
Crouse
Sanchez
Falter
It’s up to the players to prove that they belong.
Guru, I’m going back much further than this list. Nowhere did I indicate all prospects should be called up. But when you haven’t made the playoffs in 10 years, many of which were rebuilding years, an organization, IMO, should error more on the side of giving chances.
If we are going back for a while, then we can go back to 2015 – 2017, the 3 seasons where the Phillies had 63, 71, 66 wins respectively.
In 2015, the Phillies gave opportunities to:
Aaron NOLA
Severino Gonzalez
Maikel Franco (was now a full time starter)
Odubel HERRERA
Alec Asher
Elvis Araujo
Darnell Sweeney
Jerad Eickhoff
Aaron Altherr
Colton Murray
Adam Morgan
Hector Neris
2016
Jake Thompson
Zach EFLIN
Edubray Ramos
Roman Quinn
Tyler Goeddel
Jorge Alfaro
Vince Velasquez
Joely Rodriguez
Tommy Joseph
Daniel Stumpf
2017
JP Crawford
Victor Arano
Nick Williams
Ricardo Pinto
Drew Anderson
Jesen Therrien
Yacksel Rios
Rhys HOSKINS
Nick Pivetta
Ben Lively
Andrew Knapp
Cameron Perkins
Hoby Milner
Mark Leiter Jr.
Brock Stassi
Looks like the Phillies have given plenty of chances when they really weren’t a good team.
Yeah I’m not really sure who wasn’t “given a chance.” Steve Susdorf? (Being facetious, I know he got a cup of coffee and didn’t really deserve more than that).
Luke Williams can be added to that list also.
Forgot to add Damon Jones, Mark Appel, Michael Kelly, Mauricio Llovera
Sometimes, the “chance” isn’t an opportunity out of the goodness of their heart, but out of necessity. For instance, Muzziotti’s “chance” came down to him or Ortiz as they were the only two outfielders left on the 40-man roster. Herrera had been hurt since spring training with an oblique which had opened a chance for Moniak who broke his hand in the last spring training game. Haseley had been traded. They decided to use Muzziotti in a limited platoon with Vierling and a late-inning defensive substitute role rather than make a trade or waiver claim that would require a 40-man move. Interestingly enough, earlier in the spring, the Phillies had considered a late-inning defensive substitute role for Johan Rojas as the 5th/6th outfielder before deciding to go another route.
For sure, sometimes the prospect gets lucky and gets an opportunity out of necessity i.e. a starter gets hurt. You could argue that Darick Hall got that opportunity because Bryce got hurt.
In any case, the prospect has an opportunity to make a good impression. It’s up to the prospect to show something to the Phillies.
I’m curious to understand why Rojas was promoted to Reading. I mean he had a .612 OPS at JS. Was he promoted because there was an opening at Reading? If I was Ethan Wilson, I might be a little confused as to why I didn’t go up instead of Rojas, considering that Wilson’s numbers are better across the board.
I can only speculate but Rojas had been better in the past month than he was earlier in the season, plus he spent a little time in JS last year. Wilson had a poor June after a good May.
I also wasn’t sure if Rojas was promoted as part of a chain reaction from Harper’s injury or if the brass just thought he was ready.
Recency bias?
June
Rojas – .286/.333/.418 2 HR, 9 RBI, 6 BB, 19 K, 11 SB, 1 CS
Wilson – .232/.297/.364 2 HR, 11 RBI, 8 BB, 23 K, 6 SB, 3 CS
Hey Jim – maybe dumb question, but what is the development list?
Have we seen the last of Painter this year?
development list seems to be just not on an active roster but not injured.
Keith law posted this today:
Painter is huge — 6-foot-7 and listed at a light 215 — and the ball comes out like you’d expect from a pitcher that physical. He was 95-98 in his 28-pitch outing on Sunday, with the ball getting in on hitters very quickly, and paired it with a plus curveball at 76-81 that had depth and angle to it and that he could use to get a called strike against a lefty. He didn’t throw a changeup in the game or, I think, in warmups. He’s on line to the plate and has a high three-quarters slot that makes great use of his height. He’d skipped a start the previous series as the Phillies try to manage the 19-year-old’s workload in his first full season in pro ball, so this was like a rehab outing as they build him back up to making full starts again. Other than wanting to see a third pitch, I couldn’t have asked for more from him.
In the minors, the development list is essentially the IL with fewer restrictions. You don’t have to have an injury to be on the Development List. There is no minimum or maximum time to be spent on the Development List. You can stay with the team when you are on the Development List. When you are on the Injured List, you are prevented from traveling with the team or taking part in baseball activities with the team. These restrictions don’t apply to you if you are on the Development List.
I have wondered the same all season. I had another discussion today with a friend about the Development List this morning. The above is about as close as I can explain it until I get my hands on the new CBA later this summer.
Regarding Painter: The Phillies have a hard cap on his innings this year. Same for Abel. Different numbers, though. They want Painter to pitch in August. Their plan all along was to take a break during the season. He has continued to pitch during his stint on the Development List. His normal between games work. Plus, live BPs and such.
This is not an unusual practice in the minors, I’ve been told. Teams the Phillies are trying to emulate do this. Like Tampa Bay, Houston, Los Angeles.
Ignore my comment, I see Painter pitched last night.
Sorry
Thanks for the list, Jim. I missed the transaction where the Phils released Kyle Dohy. He had great strikeout numbers at every level, but huge control issue. I always hoped he would figure things out, but he never did. Good luck to him.
Any word on why O’Hoppe hasn’t been playing a lot recently? Is he battling injury?
Flu like illness from what was reported, but not Covid.
Yes, flu. He and his roommate, Vito Friscia, contracted the flu. He had it much worse than Vito who lost a few pounds but didn’t lose as much time.
Hard to imagine young strapping healthy athletes coming down with influenza in the middle of the summer, but I guess it happens
So the Phillies will be headed down to Toronto to play the Blue Jays on July 12 and 13. The Phillies have already moved Wheeler’s start to tomorrow so he could be in line to pitch on the 13th (instead of Kyle Gibson which makes sense). This also means that Wheeler is vaccinated. Falter was optioned down after the game today, presumably because Eflin is ready to come off the IL to pitch on the 12th. I’m hoping we’ll know more about who’s starting on the 12th in the coming days. Also, it will be interesting to see who’s headed to the restricted list for that series (and won’t get paid) and who’ll be called up. No idea if this applies to starting pitchers who won’t be pitching in Toronto (i.e. Gibson, Sanchez, Nola).
