Phillies’ Affiliates’ Recap (7/13/2021)

Let’s hope the Phillies drafted better than the affiliates played yesterday.  Everybody lost except the Complex team.  Well, we know why Cam Bedrosian was available.  He blew a save and took the loss for Lehigh Valley.  Reading got beat bad.  Jersey Shore got shut out wasting some good pitching.  Clearwater got beat like they got caught stealing something while their opponent ran wild on the basepaths.  And, both DSL teams combined to lose four games at the start of their seasons.  Only the FCL Phillies managed to avoid losing, posting wins Monday and Tuesday.

Lehigh Valley (26-34) lost to Buffalo, 2-1.

David Paulino (3.96) pitched four, scoreless innings.  He gave up 4 hits and struck out two.  Mike Adams (1.42) pitched two, scoreless innings, issued a walk, and struck out two.  Cam Bedrosian (1-1, 7.71) blew the save and took the loss.  He pitched one inning and gave up 2 runs on 3 hits.  Ramon Rosso (3.57) walked one in one inning.

Matt Vierling (.211) went 2-4 with a double.  Mickey Moniak (.223) went 1-3 with a triple and a run scored.  Darick Hall (.185) drove in the only run on a ground out.

Reading (26-35) lost to Portland, 9-3.

Julian Garcia (0-4, 10.13) got lit in two innings.  He gave up 7 runs (6 ER) on 7 hits, one walk, and 3 HR.  Nick Lackney (2.77) pitched three shutout innings allowing just 2 hits.  Tyler Carr (5.68) pitched two innings and gave up one run on 3 hits and 2 walks.  Austin Ross (5.73) pitched two innings and gave up one run on 3 hits and a walk.

Jersey Shore (26-35) lost to Brooklyn, 1-0.

Jonathan Hughes (4.50) pitched 4.2 innings and gave up 4 hits and 3 walks.  He struck out four.  JP Woodward (2.35) stranded 2 inherited runners and pitched 1.1 no-hit innings allowing one walk.  Blake Brown (0-1, 4.43) pitched 1.1 innings giving up one run on 2 hits and a walk.  Tyler Burch allowed one of two inherited runners to score in 0.2 innings on a sac fly.

The BlueClaws managed just 3 hits, singles by Logan O’Hoppe (.278), Jonathan Guzman (.158), and Keaton Greenwalt (.187).

Clearwater (31-29) got their collective butts kicked by Dunedin, 9-1.

Gunner Mayer (0-4, 10.61) lasted 1.2 innings and gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks.  Anton Kuznetsov (3.86) stranded two inherited runners, pitched 2.1 scoreless innings, gave up a hit, walked a batter, and struck out four.  Rafael Marcano (2.61) pitched three innings and gave up 3 runs (2 ER) on 4 hits and 3 walks.  He struck out six.  Alejandro Made (10.80) pitched two innings and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk.

Jadiel Sanchez (.333) went 2-4. Nicolas Torres (.245) went 1-3 with a solo HR (2).

The Blue Jays were successful on 7 of 8 steal attempts.  They were 1-2 against Mayer/Gutierrez, 1-1 against Kuznetsov/Gutierrez, and 5-6 against Marcano/Gutierrez.

  1. I’m wondering if Mayer is still hurt as he tries to get himself back but with terrible results so far.
Very little positive to pull from last night’s games

    1. One hi-lite…high bonus kid…top ten international Latin player from the last signing period…catcher Rik Perez did have two hits in the DSL for the Red team.

  2. Have to think some cuts are coming soon. Looking at Jersey Shore and a bunch of mid-20 somethings hitting under .200 for starters

  3. Hi guys, first time caller/long time listener (reader?)!

Went to the Lehigh Valley/Trenton game last night and saw a few things that stood out to me.

I thought Paulino threw nice. Kept the ball down in the zone and threw mid 90s.

Bedrosian… not so much. He sat pretty consistent at 92 and they were teeing off on him. He didn’t look healthy to us.

Moniak and Vierling had several good at bats, driving a couple fastballs. Mickey turned a double into a triple with heads up baserunning, but still seems to be really long to the ball on anything above his belt.

Vierling played 3B due to all of the injuries in the infield. He had one awkward throw (footwork) but made it work the rest of the game. According to baseball reference he hasn’t played 3B since he was at Notre Dame.

    Mike Adams impressed me.

Dalton Guthrie did not. I’m guessing he’s playing a level ahead of where he should be in a perfect 2021 season, but he doesn’t look like he has much of a plan at the plate.

This lineup is garbage. I know they’ve signed a lot of AAAA filler recently, but yikes.

    1. Excellent feed back Jeff….

Guthrie is 25 now so he’s probably where he should be he’s just not that good. Maybe you excuse him on the missed year of development but he’s been in the system since 2017

His dad being a former big league pitcher and highly athletic meant he was worth taking a flier on from a big program like Florida as a 6th rounder. But you can definitely see the difference once these guys hit pro ball

I still have a hard time seeing a tell tale data point from the college game to the pros. Guthrie by all accounts had a solid BB rate and K Rate. Didn’t demonstrate much power but always had good contact rates.

C’est la vie as they say in France

    2. Maton is up, Williams is up, Jankowski is up, Haseley is hurt, Randolph is hurt. That’s a lot of movement for the hitters. I’m not surprised that Lehigh is a mess.

    1. Yes Brito has finally become the player many of us imagined 3 years ago. He’ll likely be in LHV in August.
Lots of org moves coming as 20+ players, mostly pitchers, join the system. Promotions and releases are coming in the next two weeks.
