Clearwater (12-18) beat Daytona, 9-6.
Julian Garcia was spotted a 3-run lead and proved unable to hold it. He successfully kept the Tortugas off the board through three innings, but finally squandered the lead in a 32-pitch fourth inning. He issued a lead off walk, 2-run HR, and loaded the bases on three singles before recording an out on a game-tying force out.
Garcia answered the bell for the fifth, but quickly broke the tie in favor of the turtles. He was helped though by an outfield assist by Jhailyn Ortiz or the Threshers would have been in more than a 2-run hole. He was finally relieved by Connor Brogdon (2-0, 1.80) who stranded a runner and got the elusive third out.
Brogdon pitched an additional two innings and allowed an unearned run while the Threshers mounted an offensive attack of there own and retook the lead. Jonathan Hennigan (0.60) shut down Daytona over the final two innings and earned his fifth save.
The Threshers built their early lead on Matt Vierling’s 2-run HR (4) in the first inning and Vierling’s sac fly in the third. The came back with 4 runs in the fifth on a ground out, another Vierling RBI single, and Jake Scheiner’s 2-run HR (1). They closed out the scoring with 2 runs in the sixth on Simon Muzziotti’s sac fly and a wild pitch.
The Threshers collected 14 hits. Muzziotti had three. Alec Bohm, Madison Stokes (.305), Matt Vierling (309), and Jhailyn Ortiz had 2 hits each. Vierling had 4 RBI and stole his 7th base. Muzziotti was caught stealing for the 6th time in 12 attempts.
Before the game, Daniel Brito was awarded his Rawlings Gold Glove as the best second baseman in baseball last season.
Jonathan India is a member of the Tortugas. He was the Reds first round selection in 2018. He was discussed some during our discussions last season. One guy would have taken him in the first round, and two others would have taken him if their first choices had been selected at #2. He played in both Rookie leagues last season (Pioneer and Appalachian) before going to full season A-ball in the Midwest League. In 254 career ABs (including this season), he has a .236/.355/.417 slash with 10 HR.

Lehigh Valley (19-9) beat Buffalo, 5-3.
Cole Irvin pitched into the seventh inning, just long enough to surrender a 2-1 lead. Yacksel Rios (3.46) allowed an inherited runner to score that gave Buffalo the lead. He became the pitcher of record when the IronPigs retook the lead. He was lifted with a couple runners on base, and Edgar Garcia (1.65) stranded the runners, preserved the victory, and earned his third save.
The IronPigs tied the game in the third inning on Shane Robinson’s solo HR (4). They took the lead in the fourth on Matt McBride’s bases-loaded walk. They regained the lead in the eighth on Gift Ngoepe’s 3-run double.
Robinson (.354) went 3-5 and had half the IronPigs’ hits. They drew 8 walks with Andrew Romine (.330), Lane Adams (.282), and Matt McBride (.333) drawing 2 each.

Lakewood (9-20) lost to Rome, 2-1.
Victor Santos (2-2, )pitched perfect for three innings, gave up a hit in the fourth but was still facing the minimum when the runner was erased trying to steal by catcher Jack Conley. He gave up the Braves only runs in a 2-run fifth that could have been worse were it not for Ben Pelletier throwing out a runner at the plate. Santos’ line was 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K.
Francisco Morales (6.16) pitched 2.1 innings, throwing 53 pitches (30 strikes, 56.6%). he gave up a hit, walked 3 and struck out four. Tyler Carr (0.73) stranded an inherited runner and struck out two in 1.2 innings.
Pelletier provided the offense on a fourth inning solo HR (2). Hunter Stovall (.274) had 2 of the BlueClaws 5 hits.

Edgar Garcia might be almost ready. He’s young and I’m sure there’s stuff for him to work on, but my confidence in him now exceeds that in Yacksel Rios and maybe even Austin Davis, as relievers on the 40-man.
From Reading, JD Hammer should also be getting attention for promotion and eventually to the big club,…especially after last night’s melt down.
Hammer is no spring chicken anymore….so his time is close.
It’s good to see Hammer has apparently rebounded from his injury last year. I don’t know what he’s throwing now but the numbers are excellent and he seems pretty much ready for AAA, at least.
Simon Muzziotti, the 20 yo who was gifted to the Phils by a Red Sox signing blunder, is showing more and more. He had a soft 19 yo season in LKW last year (.263/.299/.331). He got hurt, a finger injury in April and didn’t get back until late June. It slowed him down a lot but he’s bouncing back this year with CLW. He’s upped his triple slash to .299/.349/.402. He’s K’ing at a lesser rate and BB’ing at a greater rate. His SB rate isn’t good but he stole 19 bases and only was caught 4 times last year. He started this season with 6 SBs in 7 attempts and has been caught 5 straight times since. Let’s get a base stealing coach down there and straighten him out. We know he has a ton of speed but he must be tipping off the pitcher or catcher or gotten into a pattern that is known to the opposition. Maybe he likes to run on the 2nd pitch or he takes a bigger lead when he’s going to steal. Just call for a pitchout, and it’s easy to ring up a CS. His defense is very good with 1 E and 1 Assist. He had 7 A’s last year to 1 E.
Through Friday’s games, for guys who’ve played in 15 or more games so far, the top guys for:
BA are Grullon (.400), Brantly (.388), Bohm (.351), Gutierrez (.345) and Castillo (.344).
The OBP guys are Brantly, Robinson, Grullon, Bohm and Castillo.
The best RBI guys: Grullon, Walding, Hall, Cozens, Hernandez and Maton.
HRs: Cozens, Adams, Hernandez, Grullon, Walding and Hall.

BBs: Cozens, Listi, Robinson, Gamboa and Bohm.
Leaders in Ks: Cozens, Adams, Kroon, De La Cruz, Gamboa, Walding and Moniak.
I could see DeLos Santos getting sent down so he can keep pitching while a more traditional reliever arm goes back up. I think it’s time to be creative. Gilbert has been terrific and could get the next shot. A 40 soot is available now. Garcia is also a possible arm. Reliable arms are sure needed in Philly.
It’s nice to see Clearwater hitting more consistently now. Let’s keep it going. As for Reading, let’s start their offense….
milb.com transactions page is now reporting that Spencer Howard has been placed on the 7-day Injured List.
Came here to post about the Spencer Howard DL. ANyone know why?
Tuesday will be two weeks since he last pitched….vs Fire Frogs.
Maybe he tweaked something and the Phillies want to give him some time to rest and recover. Phillies are very careful with their pitchers. Spencer’s father will sometimes comment…he did last week…maybe he will do it again, if however, he thinks it is appropriate to do.
Moniak and Randolph with a good offensive show today.
… and Haseley in the second game.
Love to see Haseley catch fire and move up to AAA by june1
and open spot at reading for Vierling.
Looking at stats after today’s games.
Looking at 2019 Prospects, Top 30
6 of 16 hitting above .250, Bohm .300 setting high
7 of 14 pitchers have high of .6.94, low 4.43 era
Think Phillies evaluation process is.
