Box Score Recap – 6/12/2017 (and a brief XST report)

Lehigh Valley and Reading were not scheduled on Draft Night.

Clearwater was suspended due to rain after the top of the third, wasting a Cole Irvin start.

Lakewood’s was the only game completed among the affiliates.  They lost a one-run game.

Roman Quinn has been reported to have arrived in Clearwater to rehab without surgery.

XST – Derek Campbell, Harold Martinez, Zach Green, and Tom Windle played in an XST game.  Will Stewart started and looked good in the first and third innings.  In fact, I don’t think I ever saw him better than in his first inning when he breezed through the Blue Jays and recorded two strike outs.  Unfortunately, several bad breaks in the second inning led to four runs.  He came back sharp in the third.  Stewart’s FB sat 91-92, touching 93 MPH.

Victor Sobil followed and was a little raggedy as he had trouble finding the strike zone.  His FB was 92-93, and touched 95 MPH.

Tom Windle faced 4 batters and recorded 3 ground outs and a walk.  He threw 17 pitches, 12 strikes.  He got pinched on two pitches during the walk.  His FB was 91-92, touching 93 MPH.

The Phillies won 7-6.  They scored 2 runs in each of the first two innings, which the Jays rolled, on a wild pitch, Martinez ground out, and Rivero 2-run HR.

Thirteen players were retired in a row until the seventh.  Rafael Marchan tied the game with a 2-run double.  Greg Pickett drove in the go-ahead run with a SF in the ninth.

Notable:  Campbell (0-3, HBP) played a full game at second.  Green (0-2, 2 BB) was DH, but warmed up the outfielders between inning, long-tossing with the center fielder from the right field foul line.  Stephen and Stobbe went 0-2.  Ortiz went 0-1 with a BB.

Clearwater (34-29) Game against Lakeland was suspended.  It will be completed Tuesday at 5:00 PM, followed by a 7-inning game.  Score was 0-0 when stopped.

Irvin (2.70) looked sharp.  He threw 29 pitches in 3.0 inning, 20 for strikes.  He threw 8 in the first inning, and needed just 6 in the third.  Irvin’s FB was 91-94 MPH.  His 2 strike outs came on 94 MPH FB swinging.  Six of his 20 strikes came swinging (all FB), 3 came looking.  He gave up one hit, a single, walked none, and ran one 3-ball count.

The Threshers mounted a first inning threat.  Damek Tomscha walked and Wilson Garcia lined a single to right.  But, Cornelius Randolph’s deep fly to the gap in left hung up and was caught.

The Tigers’ pitcher was a junk-baller with a knuckle ball.  Jose Pujols was inserted back in the line up and struck out on an 80 MPH FB (?).

  • # 5 Kilome (3-2, 2.60):
  • #10 Randolph (.230):

  1. As a Quinn supporter, let me say how relieved I am that no surgery is required. He’ll be back in another month and I’m very relieved. He’ll still have lots of ball to play and I expect he’ll be in Philly at some point.
Let’s go Klentak, time to start making some decisions.

  2. So appreciative of this site and the effort you put in.

I don’t recall seeing much anywhere about how Gowdy has looked in XST. He occupied such a high draft position and bonus slot that I naturally want him to succeed greatly. Any info or word?

    1. Never mind. The scoreboard listed roman Quinn as 2b. Wonder where they got that from.

  3. So interested to see how Kyle Young and Morales does this year . . . I honestly think we will look back in a few years and say that Young was a steal of the draft. Also on a side note its good to see Jesse Biddle throwing well, so far in 34ip he’s got an ERA of 2.65 and a k/9 of 10.1 and less hits than IP. Hope he can keep it up.
