Cole Irvin was your selection for the #38 prospect in the organization with 33 of 165 votes (20%).  Arquimeded Gamboa  and  Deivi Grullon finished in a tie for second with 27 votes (16%). Others receiving double-digit votes include Francisco Morales (13 votes, 8%), Mauricio Llovera (12 votes, 7%), and Josh Stephen (10 votes, 6 %).

Cole Irvin was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 29th round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft out of high school but opted to attend college.  He was drafted again by the Pirates in the 32nd round of the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft while at the University of Oregon and decided to return for his senior year.  The move paid off as he was drafted again, this time by the Phillies in the 5th round of the 2016 MLB June Amateur Draft out of the University of Oregon.  He signed on June 23rd and was assigned to Williamsport on July 1st.

Irvin excelled in the age appropriate NY-Penn League.  He appeared in 10 games and started seven.  He posted a 5-1 record and a 1.97 ERA in 45.2 innings.  He had a 0.964 WHIP, 1.6 BB/9, and 7.3 K/9.

Irvin had similar metrics in 105.0 innings during his senior season at Oregon – 1.11 WHIP, 1.58 BB/9, and 7.97 K/9.

The left-handed pitcher was reported to have a low 90s fastball and a mid 80s slider while in Williamsport.

  1. Doesn’t detract from the excellent write-up of Cole Irvin, but tallies of other vote getters in the first paragraph are a bit confusing!

  2. Between Romero and Irvin, our young lefties really need to work on their facial hair grooming.

    Went with Morales just for pure upside and projection here.
