Box Score Recap – 8/9/2016

Last night was the Night of the Strike Out.

In Lehigh, starters Phil Klein and Chad Green (Scranton) struck out 10 opponents each (in 5 innings).  The pitching staffs combined to strike out 26 batters (13 for each team).

In Binghamton, fans also saw 26 strike outs, 14 by Phils’ pitchers and 12 by Mets’ pitchers. Tom Eshelman shone with 11 K in six innings.

In Clearwater, 13 Threshers struck out, but only 9 Yankees.

On the road, Lakewood’s Franklyn Kilome struck out 11 of the 17 batters that BlueClaws’ pitchers rang up at Delmarva.

But, in Williamsport, 6 errors and 3 passed balls over shadowed such trivial outcomes as strike outs.

Oh, Rhys Hoskins hit his 35th and collected his 104th RBI.

Phil Klein, 27, Signed off of waivers in 2016; 8 games, 4 starts, 1-1 with a 2.13ERA for Lehigh Valley; 25.1IP 20H 6BB 25K; .215 opp avg; 1.03WHIP; 1.00 GO/AO; 2.1BB/8.9K per 9; Klein has thrown well for Lehigh Valley in varied roles but I dont expect him to make a long term Phillies impact

Ben Lively, 24, Acquired from Reds in 2014; 23 starts between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 14-4 with a 2.80ERA; 141.2IP 105H 39BB 111K; 9HR allowed; .203 opp avg; 1.02WHIP; 0.83 GO/AO; 2.5BB/7.1K per 9; 7-4 with a 3.35ERA in 14 starts for Lehigh Valley; .213 opp avg; 1.06WHIP; Lively has had an excellent year, throwing as many innings as anyone in the organization and throwing consistently well.

Adam Morgan, 26, Phils 3rd round pick in 2011; 8 games, 6-1 with a 3.04ERA; 50.1IP 43H 10BB 52K; 4HR allowed; 1.8BB/9.3K per 9; .157 vs LHH, .261 vs RHH, .209 opp avg last 30 days; Morgan won the IL Player of the week last week for his two outstanding performances and his work since being sent down from Philly has been stellar (2.76ERA in 5 starts).   Continue reading Around the System–Starting Pitching; LV, Reading and CW

Box Score Recap – 8/8/2016

The stateside starters provided sound pitching as Clearwater, Lakewood, and Williamsport won.  Clearwater moved back into first place in the FSL North.

The Threshers were powered by Aaron Brown’s 3-run HR, and Derek Campbell’s two HR, a solo and a grand slam.

The BlueClaws got support from Damek Tomscha in the ninth and Grenny Cumana in the tenth.

And, the Crosscutters needed only a little help behind Felix Paulino’s masterpiece.  They got a solo HR from Darick Hall. Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/8/2016

Open Discussion: Week of August 8th

Here’s the open discussion thread for Phillies’ talk and other topics.

The Phillies completed a 4-2 week.  they took 2 of 3 from the Giants at home then flew to San Diego and took 2 of 3 from the Padres.  Their record stands at 52-61 (8-13 since the break).  The Phillies travel to Los Angeles for three games with the Dodgers (Urias, Maeda, Kazmir) then return home for a 9-game home stand that starts with the Rockies.

Box Score Recap – 8/7/2016

Three of the organization’s four teams that played on Sunday won, and scored double digit runs while doing so.  They also received good starting pitching from Ben Lively (LHV), Nick Pivetta (REA), and Alberto Tirado (LAK); and good relief work from the Lehigh and Reading bullpens.  With all the run support, you would expect a lot of home runs from the usual suspects.  However, only Cedric Hunter, Andrew Pullin, and Gabriel Lino came through in that regard. Reading

Jorge Alfaro, 23, Acquired from Texas in 2015; .290/.331/.460 in 328AB; 12HR 55RBI; 2SB; 5%BB/23%K; .229 vs LHP; .306 vs RHP; .294 last 30 days; 77 games caught with 3 errors (.955); 5 passed balls; 27/64CS (42%); Continued progress for Alfaro both behind the plate and with the bat.

Gabriel Lino, 23, Acquired from Baltimore in 2012; .220/.289/.299 in 164 AB between Clearwater and Reading; 2HR 8RBI; 7%BB/20%K; 48 games behind the plate with 9 errors (.978); 6 passed balls; 22/59 CS (37%).  Other than his good arm, Lino has shown regression in some areas and very limited progress in others. Box Score Recap – 8/6/2016

Lots of good good performances from our starting pitchers.

Adam Morgan fell just short of a complete game victory for Lehigh Valley.

Ricardo Pinto received no decision for his eight shutout innings in Reading’s loss.

Drew Anderson received no decision for his six shutout innings in Clearwater’s win.

Lakewood’s Tyler Gilbert tossed 7.2 one-run innings.

Williamsport’s JoJo Romero pitched five shutout innings.

The GCL Phillies’ Nick Fanti allowed one run in five innings.

Box Score Recap – 8/4/2016

Roman Quinn came off the DL as the Phillies made more than a dozen transaction moves Thursday.

Lehigh lost and dropped out of first place behind David Buchanan who pitched 4-hit ball for eight innings.  Unfortunately, that came after a 4-hit, 4-run first inning.

Reading beat Bowie behind a seven home run attack.  SEVEN.  Dylan Cozens had five RBI giving him 101 this season.  101.

Clearwater beat Dunedin to move into a tie for the FSL North Division.  Zach Coppola debuted with 2 hits.

Mark Laird debuted in Lakewood with 2 hits.

Both DSL teams won.  The Phillies2 team shutout the Red Sox2 team for the second consecutive day. Continue reading Box Score Recap – 8/4/2016

Box Score Recap – 8/3/2016

The Phillies placed Aaron Nola on the DL.  Lehigh’s starter, Phil Klien was called up to start in his place and they had to scramble to find a starter.  They called up a relief pitcher from Reading.  They lost and are tied with Scranton for the division lead.

Reading treated their fans to a power surge, courtesy of Dylan Cozens, Rhys Hoskins, and Jake Fox.  They coasted to victory over Bowie.

Clearwater’s Brandon Leibrandt made his season debut after spending the season on the DL in a loss to Dunedin.

Lakewood dropped a doubleheader scoring 1 run in each game.  Jose Pujols had their RBI in each game (and no strike outs).
