  1. In considering top to bottom of the system, we should keep in mind the terrific season Rupp is having. We should be surprised that he suddenly has become a threat in hitting–with power–in addition to taking a leadership role with the pitching staff. IMO, Ruiz has helped him gain a better understanding of the requirements for MLB work.

With the closest two being Knapp and Alfaro, there seems no need to “rush” either one…but Knapp could be given a shot at a backup role to begin in ST…especially if he further refines his behind the plate skills…particularly blocking pitches in the dirt, throwing out steal attempts at 2nd, and better at calling games. On these defensive shortcomings there is progress seemingly being made…and his hitting validations of last season have yet to appear in ’16.

Still, there are more games at AA this season…and a possible placement of him in some winter games could bring more benefits making him a valid candidate in ST.

As for Alfaro…he is sending signals that he could be something special…a combination of arm and power at the plate. Next year at LV…and he might break out to challenge in mid-season.

In all, there’s good news at that position for the next several years…but IMO Rupp must stay as a solid piece for the next few years at least.

  2. Marchan in the DSL has been excellent with the bat and the leather. He’s 17 y/o. He’s hitting .345/.397/.403. Behind the plate he has a 50% CS rate, with 1 PB and 4 errors. He’s only caught 16 games but he’ll be state-side next year and we can really see what kind of player he is.

If Knapp doesn’t move up the Phils next year then he will be moved down to Reading. Alfaro is looking like the better catcher and Knapp can’t or shouldn’t stop his progression. I could see the two of them sharing the catching duties in Philly in 2 years. Or one could be traded and Rupp will be there with whomever is left. Rupp has some value in trade right now so some decisions have to be made in the next year or so. I wouldn’t mind seeing Ruiz traded at the end of August and Knapp playing in September to see how it goes. If Ruiz is traded, I would tell him that he has a place in the organization after his playing days are over. He has been an asset to organization and he can still be.

  3. I don’t feel Knapp is ready defensively. He has improved at some sacrifice for his hitting, but he needs more time before making the transition. Moore has the defensive skills needed to catch in the majors, if he is brought up in September, he could open some eyes. I hope he gets the chance somewhere if not here. Nerluis Martinez should be included for some mention. He has played well in the GCL.
