Box Score Recap – 5/30/2016

Lehigh Valley (26-24) Beat Norfolk, 6-4.  David Buchanan gave up four runs early but hung around to pitch seven innings and get his third win.  The IronPigs used a five run fourth to propel themselves to the victory.  Logan Moore had four hits.  Cody Asche and Nick Williams had solo home runs. Box Score Recap – 5/29/2016

Lehigh Valley (25-24) Lost to Louisville, 10-6.  Zach Eflin (5-1, 2.81) had his worst start of the season and suffered his first loss.  Mario Hollands and Seve Gonzalez each allowed an inherited runner to score as the bull pen allowed four runs after Eflin left the game.  The offense could only manager seven hits.  Three came in their five-run first inning, highlighted by Cameron Perkins’ grand slam.  Cody Asche hit his first home run.  Darin Ruf and Perkins had two-hit games. Lehigh Valley Report

Lehigh Valley wrapped on their three game series against Louisville today with a 10-6 loss  and now sit at  25-24 and in 5th place of the Northern Division of the International League, 3.5 games behind division leading Scranton.  After losing five of their last six games, Lehigh Valley will face  Norfolk who come into Coca Cola Park for a three game series Monday thru Wednesday before leaving on an 8 game road trip to Charlotte and Gwinnett.

News and Notes: James Russell made another start on Saturday evening vs. Louisville and was effective once again, giving up 2 earned runs in 5 innings of work, extending himself to 55 pitches during his 3rd start of the year.

–OF Cedric Hunter continues to play well after being sent down from Philly hitting .340 over his last 12 games (12-40) and .304 over his last 27 games (31-102).

Darin Ruf has 5HR in 51AB with Lehigh Valley this season.

–RP Luis Garcia is unscored upon in 7 of his last 8 games, during which his ERA is 0.96.  Perhaps more importantly, he has regained his control having walked just 2 in 9.1IP during that span.

–Over his last 17G, RP Edward Mujica has a 2.84ERA and has saved 11, walking just 1 in 19IP.

–Ben Lively was effective in his AAA debut on Friday, giving up just 2 earned runs on five hits over 7 innings.  He did not figure in the decision.

‘Pigs Prospects: JP Crawford reached base safely in 7 of his first 8 games with Lehigh Valley (6H, 5BB) including his first 7 games. With his AAA debut, Crawford became the youngest ‘Pig of all time at 21 yrs, 130D.    Prior to his callup, Crawford was hitting .265 with 3HR and 13RBI for Reading. Box Score Recap – 5/28/2016

Lehigh Valley (25-23) Lost to Louisville, 2-0.  James Russell and gave up two solo home runs in the first inning.  He gave the IronPigs five innings, but the offense couldn’t overcome the early disadvantage.  Three relievers provided four innings of one-hit ball.  Nick Williams had three of Lehigh Valley’s eight singles. Box Score Recap – 5/27/2016

Lehigh Valley (25-22) Lost to Louisville, 6-4 in 11 innings.  Ben Lively made his debut at AAA and turned in a quality start, 2 earned runs in seven innings.  Bobby LaFromboise and Luis Garcia combined to allow the Bats 2 important insurance runs in the eighth.  The IronPigs rallied to tie in the bottom of the inning but lost when Michael Mariot surrendered two runs in the eleventh.  The ‘Pigs were outhit 13-5.  Darin Ruf had 2 of those hits and his 5th home run.  Cody Asche made his first AAA rehab start. Box Score Recap – 5/26/2016

Lehigh Valley (25-21) Beat Pawtucket 11-4.  Jake Thompson gave up 3 runs on 6 hits in 5.2 innings.  He struck out only two.  Seve Gonzalez gave up a solo home run in relief.  The IronPigs scored 5 runs off Red Sox’ starter Henry Owens in 3.1 innings (wasn’t he a part of a lot of the Hamels-to-Boston trades that were suggested a couple years ago?).  In addition to 6 hits and 5 walks, Owens gave up a Darin Ruf home run AND hit 3 batters.  Four IronPigs had 3-hit games – J.P. Crawford, Nick Wiliams, Ruf, and Cedric Hunter.  Ruf hit 2 HR, Hunter and Angelys Nina contributed one each.  Ruf had 5 RBI, Hunter three. Continue reading Box Score Recap – 5/26/2016

Box Score Recap – 5/25/2016

Before I get into the box scores, I have some information that was requested in earlier reports.

The GCL divisions have been shuffled by the closing of the Detroit Tigers’ operations in Venezuela. The Phillies had been in the GCL Northwest Division with the Blue Jays, Pirates, and Yankees1.  The new alignment will keep the Phillies in the Northwest but the other teams in the division will be the Blue Jays, Tigers West, and Yankees West.  The Pirates were moved to the Northeast Division.  The addition of a second team for Detroit has increased the number of teams in the league to 17.  Five teams will compete in the East Division (Houston by virtue of their recent move is the new team in the East).
