Around the System–Middle Infield

A look at middle infielders around the organization.  Next, comes catchers.

Lehigh Valley

Nate Spears, 29, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .338/.389/.500 in 80 AB’s; 2HR 12RBI; 3SB; 9%bb/24%k rates; 19 games at 2B without an error; 9 games at SS with 1 error (.957); Hitting .350 in July. Since being signed a month or so ago, Spears has done a very good job solidifying the 2B position both with his glove and bat.

Freddy Galvis, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2006; .214/.313/357 in 14 AB’s; 0HR 1RBI; 4 games at SS without an error.  Galvis spent the beginning of the year in Philly and then almost immediately was significantly injured upon being sent to Lehigh Valley.  Returned to the lineup just last week.

Reading

KC Serna, 24, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .282/.315/.384 in 354 AB’s between Clearwater and Reading; 3HR 32RBI; 10SB; 6%bb/9%k rates; 25 games at SS with 3 errors (.975); 33 games at 2B with 4 errors (.978); 30 games at 3B with 5 errors (.938). Serna has had a very solid year before going down last week with an oblique injury and being placed on the DL.  SHowed himself to be both a capable hitter and solid fielder.

Albert Cartwright, 26, Acquired from Houston in 2010; .270/.315/.349 in 304 AB’s; 3HR 15RBI; 17SB; 5%bb/23%k rates; .267 vs. LHP; .270 vs. RHP; .288 with RISP; 50 games at 2b with 6 errors (.976); 26 games in the OF with 1 error (.983). Now with almost 900 plate appearances with Reading over two years, Cartwright has earned the right to move up.

Edgar Duran, 23, Signed as a free agent in 2008; .233/.291/.307 in 283 AB’s between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 4HR 17RBI; 5/12 SB; 7%bb/14%k rates; Hitting just .145 with RISP. 80 games at SS with 17 errors (.956); 5 games at 2B with 1 error.  Simply ok.

Matt Tolbert, 32, Re-signed as a free agent in 2014; .209/.281/.227 in 110AB’s; 0HR 5RBI; 3SB; 10%bb/10%k rates; 9 games at 2B with 3 errors (.900); 2 games at SS without an error; 14 games at 3B with 1 error (.972).  Another season marred by injury.  Organizational guy.

CLearwater

Angelo Mora, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2010; .243/.297/.327 in 263 AB’s; 2HR 17RBI; 2/10SB; .211 vs. LHP; .257 vs. RHP; .315 with RISP; 47 games at 2B with 7 errors (.969); 26 games at SS with 4 errors (.967); 7 games in the OF without an error; Has played well in the field and slightly above mediocre with the bat.  Still, just 21.

JP Crawford, 19, Phils 1st round pick in 2013; .289/.381/.404 in 329 AB’s; 7HR 28RBI; 14/24 SB; 13%bb/15%k rates; 83 games at SS with 21 errors (.945).  .275/.339/.402 in 102 AB’s with Clearwater; Crawford continues to progress just the way the Phils had hoped.  A few more errors than I would like to see, but an excellent season of progress thus far.

Lakewood

ANdrew Pullin, 21, Phils 5th round pick in 2012; .272/.348/.368 in 356 AB’s; 7HR 42RBI; 6/12 SB; 9%bb/18%k rates; .250 vs. LHP; .280 vs. RHP; .272 with RISP; Hitting .314 since June 1; 92 games at 2B with 20 errors (.951). Pullin continues to produce offensively and improve defensively.

Enmanuel Serra, 21, Signed by Phils in 2011; .250/.323/.268 in 56AB’s; 0HR 2RBI; 2SB; 9%bb/14%k rates; 12 games at SS with 3 errors (.939); 5 games at 2B without an error.  Has done a good job in a limited capacity as a backup.

Malquin Canelo, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2011; .219/.257/.281 in 128 AB’s; 0HR 8RBI; 2/4SB; 5%bb/22%k rates; 37 games at SS with 11 errors (.931). Looking forward to seeing how Canelo produces with every day work the rest of the year.

Williamsport

Drew Stankiewicz, 21, Phils 11th round pick in 2014; .230/.268/.270 in 74 AB’s between Lakewood and WIlliamsport; 1HR 10RBI; 1SB; 6%BB/11%K rates; 13 games at 2B with 3 errors (.945); 7 games at SS with 1 error (.971). Has been up and down since being drafted in June.

Derek Campbell, 23, Phils 20th round pick in 2014; .327/.375/.519 in 104 AB’s; 2HR 10RBI; 1SB; 3%bb/19%k rates; 12 games at 2B with 4 errors (.939); 7 games at 3B with 1 error (.957); 4 games at SS with 1 error (.955); Has had several monster games and is showing versatility.  Would like to see him get some AB’s in Lakewood.

Robinson Torres, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2009; .206/.215/.238 in 63 AB’s between Lakewood and WIlliamsport; 0HR 7RBI; 3SB; 2%bb/25%k rates.  15 games at 2B without an error; 3 games at SS without an error; 2 games at 3B without an error;  Good field, no hit.

Emmanuel Marrero, 21, Phils 7th round pick in 2014; .292/.370/.371 in 89 AB’s; 0HR 6RBI; 4/7SB; 8%bb/12%k rates; 26 games at SS with 9 errors (.931). Marrero is someone who has opened many eyes since the season began in Mid June. Slick fielder who is showing he can hit, at least at this level.

    1. He was reviewed with corner infielders as he played over 50% of his games there at the time. Love Alonso.

  1. Cumana has had a great start in the GCL. He was excellent last year in Venezuela. He is some one to watch. Cuicas has done well also with limited playing time. I imagine he is still well-thought-of. He is starting to show his potential.

    1. is cumana really as small as milb lists him. makes for a nice story but seems like he makes toccci look huge
