Around the System–Outfield, LV, Reading, Clearwater

A look at how outfielders at the upper levels of the organization are performing, Since our last report, two highly talked about under-performers have left the organization through their release, Tyson Gillies and Anthony Hewitt.  Look for the report on Lakewood, Williamsport and GCL outfielders before the end of the week.

Lehigh Valley

Leandro Castro, 25, SIgned as a free agent in 2007; .264/.319/.394 in 292 AB’s; 5 HR 34RBI; 5/11SB; 7%bb/15% k rates; .299 since June 1; .213 vs. LHP; .288 vs. RHP; .270 with RISP.  77 games in the OF with 5 errors (.974); 7 OF assists; Castro has been very good since late May and with all the issues in the Phils outfield should be getting a shot to see what he can do in the majors.

Cameron Perkins, 23, Phils 6th round pick in 2012; .292/.353/.416 in 298 AB’s between Reading and Lehigh Valley; 5HR 40RBI; 5/10 SB; 8%bb/14% k rates; Hitting .196 in 102 AB’s for Lehigh Valley.  71 games in the OF without an error; 6 assists; Outstanding in Reading and having trouble adjusting thus far in Lehigh Valley.  Still has time and the year that Perkins has had should still be considered a success at this stage.

Grady Sizemore, 31, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .270/.341/.51 in 37 AB’s for Lehigh Valley; 7 games in the OF with 1 error; I expect to see Sizemore in Phillies pinstripes by the weekend.

Steve Susdorf, 28, Phils 19th round pick in 2008; .276/.337/.369 in 268 AB’s; 2HR 29RBI; 7/9 SB; 9%BB/18%k rates; .243 vs. LHP; .288 vs. RHP; .303 with RISP; Hitting .259 since June 1.  35 games in the OF with 2 errors (.970); 2 OF assists; Susdorf has done almost exactly what has been expected of him this year.  Solid AAAA OF.

Darin Ruf, 27, Phils 20th round pick in 2009; .211/.291/.303 in 76AB’s; 1 HR 6RBI; 8 games in the OF without an error; 3 games at 1B without an error; Ruf’s season has been marred by injuries, first right out of Spring Training and more recently a knee/wrist issue that caused him to miss a month. If he returns close to 2013 form, he will be in Philadelphia fairly quickly.

Clete Thomas, 30, Signed as a free agent in 2014; Has been on the DL with fractured ribs for two months.  Return is not imminent.

Reading

Aaron Altherr, 23, Phils 9th round pick in 2009; .236/.291/.377 in 284 AB’s between Clearwater and Reading; 6HR 34RBI; 8/11SB; 6%bb/23%k rates; .200 vs. LHP; .251 vs. RHP; .230 with RISP; Hitting .290 since June 1.  72 games in the OF with 7 errors (.967); 9 OF assists; Altherr has performed well over the last 6 weeks and appears likely to start 205 in the Lehigh Valley OF.

Kelly Dugan, 23, Phils 2nd round pick in 2009; .289/.379/.433 in 90 AB’s; 3HR 13RBI; 1SB; 25 games in the OF with 2 errors (.962); 0 assists; Dugan has been slowed by multiple injuries this year and while the line looks nice, there are concerns over his ability to stay on the field.

Peter Lavin, 26, Phils 20th round pick in 2011; .293/.333/.479 in 317 AB’s between CLearwater and Reading; 10HR 33RBI;  9/15 SB; 6%bb/15% k rates; Hitting .296 in 108 AB’s for Reading.  79 games in the OF with 3 errors (.986); 17 OF assists; Lavin has been perhaps the most consistent hitter in the organization this year. Additionally, his 17 assists are not a typo.

Zach Collier,23, Phils 1st round pick in 2008; .224/.300/.329 in 152 AB’s; 2HR 9RBI; 3/9SB; 8%bb/25%k rates; .176 vs. LHP; .248 vs. RHP; .161 with RISP; 45 games in the OF with 1 error (.988); 2 OF assists; Continued production just above the range of futility has allowed Collier to be removed from the 40 man roster.

Clearwater

Brian Pointer, 22, Phils 28th round pick in 2010; .245/.326/.394 in 241 AB’s; 7HR 24RBI; 6/10SB; 9%bb/27%k rates; .292 vs. LHP; .225 vs. RHP; .239 with RISP; Hitting .333 with 4HR since June 1.  66 games in the OF without an error; 7 OF assists. Pointer has shown marked improvement of late and played a very good OF.  Is it a tease?

Brandon  Short, 25, Signed as a free agent in 2014; .219/.283/.386 in 114 AB’s; 2HR 17RBI; 1SB; .281 vs. LHP; .195 vs. RHP; .294 with RISP; 8%bb/21% k rates.  25 games in the OF with 3 errors (.923); 0 assists; Short has had a few big games but generally mediocre at best.

Roman Quinn, 21, Phils 2nd round pick in 2011; .266/.348/.353 in 139 AB’s; 2HR 11RBI; 8/12 SB; .265 vs. LHP; .267 vs. RHP; .304 with RISP; 9%bb/24% k rates; Hitting .282 since June 1. 19 games in the OF with 2 errors (.955); 2 OF assists; 17 games at SS with 3 errors (.954);  Quinn came back from his Achilles injury quicker than expected and has smoothly transitioned back to CF.  Plenty of reason for optimism with the young talent that should continue to grow.

Everett Williams, 23, Acquired from San Diego in 2014; .284/.329/.373 in 67 AB’s between GCL, CLearwater and Reading; 0HR 13RBI; 3SB. 17 games in the OF without an error; 3 OF assists; Has played well since his acquisition from the Padres.
