A first look at corner infielders throughout the system. Next up will be middle infield, early next week.
Maikel Franco, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2010; .215/.280/.322 in 121 AB’s; 2HR 10RBI; 1SB; 8%bb/18%k rates; .222 vs. LHP; .212 vs. RHP; .176 with RISP. 24 games at 3B with 2 errors (.970); 7 games at 1B without an error; A very disappointing first 6 weeks for Franco, but some recent signs of life to hang onto. He ultimately will come around, question is how long it takes.
Jim Murphy, 28, Phils 17th round pick in 2006; .277/.354/.482 in 112 AB’s; 4HR 18RBI; 9%bb/23%K rates; .200 vs. LHP; .312 vs. RHP; .273 with RISP; .321 in May. 26 games at 1B without an error; Murphy has been one of the most consistent performers for Lehigh Valley this year swinging a good bat and playing well at 1B.
Cesar Hernandez, Soon to be 24, Signed as a free agent in 2006; .353/.423/.518 in 85 AB’s; 3HR 13RBI; 1/3 SB; 11%bb/11%k rates; .367 vs. LHP; .345 vs. RHP; .368 with RISP. 14 games at 3B with 7 errors (.829); 7 games at SS with 1 error (.962); 2 games at 2B without an error; Hernandez has simply scalded the ball since being sent to the minors in mid April. The Phils have tried to get him acclimated at 3B and that has proven to be an uphill battle with some significant troubles at the hot corner.
Chris Serritella, 24, Phils 4th round pick in 2012; .216/.260/370 in 46 AB’s; 2HR 7RBI; 6%bb/32%k rates. 3 games at 1B with 1 error; Has shown very little in his limited playing time this year. Has been used almost exclusively at DH.
Brock Stassi, 24, Phils 33rd round pick in 2011; .289/.355/.410 in 83 AB’s; 1HR 10 RBI; 1SB; 9%bb/10% k rates; .280 vs. LHP; .293 vs. RHP. 22 games at 1B with 2 errors (.989); 3 games in the OF with 2 errors; Stassi keeps on hitting, making solid contact and producing in a part time role.
Art Charles, 23, Acquired from Toronto in 2013; .248/.287/.327 in 101 AB’s; 1HR 11RBI; 5%bb/31% k rates; .172 vs. LHP; .278 vs. RHP; .259 with RISP; 25 games at 1B with 4 errors (.983); Striking out a ton and isnt hitting lefties at all.
Harold Martinez, 24, Phils 2nd round pick in 2011; .236/.258/.350 in 123 AB’s; 2HR 13RBI; 2SB; 2%bb/25%k rates; .289 vs. LHP; .212 vs. RHP; .290 with RISP; 26 games at 3B with 3 errors (.962); This is Martinez third season in High A, and his performance suggests this season very well may be his last in the organization.
Willie Carmona, 23, Phils 11th round pick in 2012; .138/.164/.185 in 65 AB’s; 0HR 2RBI; 3%bb/21% k rates. 5 games at 1B with 1 error (.976). Has been just awful. Most of his playing time has come as a DH.
Willians Astudillo,22, Signed as a free agent in 2009; .381/.394/.546 in 97 AB’s; 2HR 20RBI; 2%bb/6% k rates; 20 games at 1B with 3 errors (.985); Has caught 2 games with 1 error; Astudillo has been absolutely raking all year. Problem is he won’t hit for the power needed to be a 1B; isnt good enough defensively to play catcher long term, and really cant play anywhere else.
Jan Hernandez, 19, Phils 3rd round pick in 2013; .179/.303/.357 in 29 AB’s; 1HR 5RBI. 8 games at 3B without an error; Much too small of a sample size to judge.
Wilmer Oberto, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2010; .235/.325/.412 in 68AB’s; 3HR 8RBI; 12%bb/36%k rates; .333 vs. LHP; .220 vs. RHP. 13 games at 1B with 1 error (.991); Has shown glimpses, but a ton of strikeouts.
Mitch Walding, 21, Phils 5th round pick in 2011; .314/.351/.371 in 35 AB’s; 0HR 4RBI; 7 games at 3B with 3 errors (.842); Missed the first month after having a rib replaced. Has been swinging the bat well but has had issues in the field in the early going.
