Per Phillies Insider the Phillies have released IF Jim Negrych, 1B Logan Pierce (2013 15th Rd), LHP Kyler Burke, RHP Zach Cooper (2012 15th Rd), C Francisco Herrera, C Josh Ludy (8th Rd 2012), and C Justin Dalles. None of the names are any big surprises and the move clears up the catching situation a bit more and almost assures Wilmer Oberto a 1B/DH job in Lakewood.

I heard there were at least 9 cuts so there might be a few more. Nick Hernandez was definitely cut. Ludy is the only mild surprise but after I saw him in person this weekend, I wasn’t surprised at all. First of all, there are lots of catchers and he wasn’t a good defensive catcher and second, he’s really bordering on being fat as in jelly roll hanging over the belt. If Frandsen goes down as expected, someone else could lose a job.

No surprise in Ludy getting cut. Mildly surprised at Dalles. Very surprised they didn’t cut another catcher in Moore. His hitting was atrocious last year at Clearwater and it looks like he will be repeating there. Judging from what I’ve seen so far this spring, it hasn’t improved at all.

the only semi-surprise for me is that they cut Pierce less than a year after he was drafted in the 15th round. They usually give these guys another year or 2 unless the player really expresses the fact that he is done playing.
