Box Score Recap – 4/29/2013

Shane Watson hit around pretty badly in his start – 7R (6 earned) on 6hits, (four of them Homeruns), no walks and 2Ks in 3IP; Kelly Dugan goes yard to continue his good start back from injury; and Cesar Hernandez with another 3 hits to lift his AVG to .380. His BABIP is .443 – unsustainable, even with line drives ticking up a little over last year. He has had several seasons around .350-.360 BABIP, so while 2013 will come back to earth, (at least 80 points or so, most likely), he has played full years getting balls through or beating them out with his legs at an above average rate.

It doesn’t appear here, but Asheville stole 9 bases on Chace Numata and Kevin Brady/Jeb Stefan, which included a couple double steals and a throwing error by Numata. Anyway – not good.

  1. A .443 BABIP is not automatically unsustainable in the minors. Granted, I would expect a player to be Ryan Braun good if he were able to sustain a BABIP like that in AAA. But the point is that BABIP should be interpreted differently in the minors than in the majors.

    1. It’s unsustainable insofar as it is way above his career norm. BABIP, on average, will be higher in the minors that in the majors but there’s a good internal control.

  2. Martin really has fallen apart in the early part of this season. kinda hard to see him being more then a hopeful late inning guy.

    1. Well no, it’s not a sure thing that he will have more successes as a reliver. But there are a lot of guys who had better results when they made the switch, that’s all people are saying.

    2. Because it is wildness in bouts, today he was terrible in the 1st and shut down from then on. In the bullpen you aren’t committed to him for 5+ innings, if the mechanics are off you pull him, if they are on he dominates.

    3. I think it’s a little early for everyone to be advocating moving Martin to the bullpen. Hard as it is, let’s give it a full season. These games don’t count, really.

  3. Cesar is duplicating his AA line from last year just with a higher BABIP. He looks like he’s probably going to be something like a.290/.330/.420 hitter with 20+ SBs in the majors. Is that a regular 2nd baseman? I’m not sure, but its close. How is the glovework?

    1. Info on Cesar’s fielding has always been good, maybe even “superior.”

And, yes those kind of stats play well for a good fielding 2nd baseman. Indicating a top of the order hitter. He is finally being coached on how to use his innate speed to steal bases…making him a valuable piece overall.

SSS…but he is showing extra base power for the alleys…and maybe an occasional HR. His is built well enough that some more power could develop.

IMO, an excellent candidate to sit at the topmost point in the lineup: good BA, good OBA, good SBs, some alley power…and damn good in the field.

Right now, he’s gotta be among our first 6-7 prospects….Me? ..I’m awaiting a continuation of his so far terrific season.

  4. Perkins just keeps on hitting, I could see him going to Reading soon to give playing time to Dugan, Altherr and Hudson. Gabriel Arias is becoming an arm to get excited about too. Watson and Morgan both pitched bad yesterday. We need both of them to step it up. Cesar is really raking but with the way Chase is playing, its hard not to expect the Phils to extend Chase for a few more years. As we’ve discussed many times, Cesar only plays 2B so he can’t be a utility guy in the majors and will stay at AAA or be traded.
When do DeFratus and Aumont trade places? Shouldn’t that have happened already?

    1. I wish – know I’m in the minority here but DeFratus stuff is more polished even if less dominant that Aumont. Justin is going to pitch for a long time in the majors IMO

    2. Why would Perkins be moved to Reading to give Altherr more playing time? Altherr has better numbers than Perkins and is the same age.

      1. There’s also the chance they send Collier back to CWater although its doubtful at this point. I just think they want Altherr, Hudson and Dugan playing every day while Perkins is older and continues to hit.

    1. Yes, but Altherr is rapidly making up ground. You don’t always get a profile regular at each position, sometimes you get a bunch at one and none at another (for example the Rangers can develop a million shortstops but can find a first baseman or corner outfielder). If you were expecting anything out of Gillies or Collier going into the year you were bound to be disappointed. Revere is going to improve, he may not be the guy that some of us thought we were getting, but he has too much of track record in the minors and majors to be this bad for the whole year, so expect him to regress towards his major league averages.

      Like

        1. Regression is the return of a statistical outlier towards the mean. His skills/development regressing would be cause for him to progress if he were to then fix the problems and improve those physical characteristics. But stats returning towards what they should be (BABIP normalizing and things like that) is regression whether up or down.

  5. I have to say that I’m becoming very bullish on Dugan; moreso since last season than a few games in 2013. Still, hit tools are there and I could see him putting up some monster numbers at Reading this year or next

    1. should say, more so ‘during’ last season than the few games he’s played so far in 2013.

    1. Indians will be have two RHPs on the mound – but with the DH in play both games I suspect Young gets at least one start during the 2-game set. Let the fun begin

  6. Darin Ruf had another good day at the plate. It would be nice to see him go on a hot streak. How’s his outfield play? Could he become an average outfielder?

    Like

    1. Doubtful. He’ll have to hit like hell to justify his existence and he just might do that.

      1. Del can hit. Feet are in wet cement and glove lacks strings. But arm is still a mini-howitzer.

  9. Franco with a double and Altherr with a HR tonight. Clearwater is becoming my first destination when I check the box scores. Also, how about Ruf? As lackluster as his start to the season was, he’s somehow got the OPS up past .800 already.

  10. Let’s keep the big league trash on the general discussion board, especially since they’re a joke right now,and may be for some time, unless some of these decent minor league players can turn into stars.

  11. Sorry barf. that I dont meet your standards on posting, But this is about the minors. dubin, has to go.and amaro should have the guts to let de frautus come up. lets see if he and savery, who has had a chance before, can do the job.The players he is running out there now can’t.The lack of trust in the minor league pitchers,to a team that has no chance to make the playoffs is amazing.two years of bad bullpens, is enough.and if people think they have a chance for the playoffs that fine. I am just being real, the lack of clutching hitting and bad bullpen has take my hope away.

  12. Nine stolen bases against him and another throwing error. Anyone really want to step up and start telling me again why Numata is even a prospect, much less a starting catcher? He’s only 20, but this is his 4th year and he’s still in A ball and not performing. Same with Logan Moore……granted, he’s thrown out 12 of 26 runners, but he’s hitting .148. This is the National League. You’re already giving up an out in the nine hole with the pitcher most of the time. Can’t afford to give up the eight hole as well.
