Adam Morgan and Nick Hernandez come back to earth, and a nice outing from one of my darkhorses in 2013, Colton Murray. 4K in 2 IP. Throws hard, could move fast if he performs, though he hasn’t much so far in 2013. And Larry Greene had 1 hit, 2 walks, and 2 Ks. The man is physically incapable of grounding out.
A note here – looks like they’re stretching out Hector Neris – 5H 2BB 8K and 2ER on 2HR in 5IP. Worth watching. The Phils have used him as a big league extra man at least once for two springs in a row, so he’s on their radar, but he’s been in the pen for his entire career, (save 1 start in the DSL in 2012). Was a late signing, (20 at the time), and so he’ll need a 40-man spot this off-season. Historically has good K numbers and good BB numbers. We shall see.

Getting concerned about Quinn… with his speed he shouldn’t be going 0-5. The Lakewood team has been pretty disappointing. And LGJ is continuing what he did last season, lots of walks, lots of Ks, and his doubles still haven’t turned into homers.

Greene’s like Art Charles, without the home runs.

Greene is getting there-only been in Lakewood a week-give him a chance as for Quinn he shows no hope at all–been there for all games thus far and have seen nothing impressive, he can bunt and errors is all I see. Very disappointing.
LikeLike
That’s kind of harsh. LGJ is almost 2.5 years younger than Charles and his walk rate is encouraging. I’m not worried about him.
LikeLike
Harsh but true. Listen or watch the games live and you will see that Quinn is not impressive at all.

Think Pat was talking about the Greene Charles comparison.
LikeLike
Yeah I was referring to Greene, not Quinn. Although I think Quinn gets a bit of a pass since he’s one of the younger guys in the league and he’s learning to switch hit.

Perhaps Qunn needs to be moved over to 2nd base.

I agree there are encouraging things about LGJ. I still have hopes for him (the Charles comment wasn’t 100 percent serious, although it is interesting that they both seem to have the same “walk or whiff” tendency). I’m just not overly impressed by what I’ve seen so far.

I noticed in the last two games that Quinn made 3 or 4 outs swinging at the first pitch, maybe he’s just in a slump right now.

Could AA be one of the toolsy OF that the team finally hit on? For S and G if big club keeps tanking and certain guys still perform and are healthy. Could we do what sox did last yr and retool? IE chooch doc chase young Adams? Like I said all health and trade rights need to be waived.

Halladay and Utley playing well is great news, not only for the season, but for getting trade value if we’re out by July 31st. Although I’m pretty sure Utley is going to get an extension here. Can’t see him in another uniform.

At this point, feel kind of embarrassed that I left Aaron Altherr off my top 30 list.

Yeah, he didn’t even make the Reader Top 30. I had him at 23. Now I’m wondering how quickly he’ll be promoted if he keeps this up.

I am so happy he is hitting well. However I am not embarrassed I left him off my top 30. Last year in Low A he hit .252/.319/.402 with a BB rate of 8.1% and a K rate of 21.7%. Not impressive. He had 25 SB, which is good (I don’t know how many CS), and his SLG was above average especially for that park. But that was about it on the positives (well, and he could field). He hadn’t played well since 100 PAs in 2010 at WPT. I think someone would have had to be very optimistic to rank him ahead of the likes of Zach Greene or Kelly Dugan.
This year so far he has a BABIP of .467. I think he will probably cool off, no matter what Joe Jordan says about bigger/stronger/confidence/inside part of the plate.
All that said, here’s hoping he stays hot. Or should I say, stays on a “therr”

I had legitimate reasons why I left Altherr off my top 30, but in retrospect, I could have placed him higher. My biggest issue with Altherr, was that as a 2009 draftee, he was behind his HS class in progress. (I left him and Kelly Dugan off my list, because of that) His performance in low A, was not adequate for prospect status, at his experience level.
You mentioned stolen bases: That is one place where his performance level is elite. Altherr was 25 for 33 last year, and is 85 of 104, for his pro career.

I hope there’s a special place in heaven where there’s a better than one in three success rate at the plate and you can watch Hewitt hit a triple but don’t have to see him whiff 3 times.

I sure hope that place in heaven also doesn’t make us listen to McCarthy and Wheels call those triples….

Matthews isn’t any better (could he STFU sometimes?), always thought Larry Andersen was pretty decent. But I have no clue why Wheeler first off is employed, and second off, been employed this long. It’s like he’s that in-law you don’t want to admit your related to, but they still show up at the family functions and you have to come to the realization that you have to deal with them.
Somewhere he must have nekkid pics of someone.

I like Fransky. LA can be a little goofy but I like him. I wish they would make those 2 the TV guys.
Your description of Wheels is funny becuase it’s true IMO. Isn’t he supposedly really close with Montgomery?
The story I remember is that when Whitey died, Harry supposedly had it set up so LA would be his partner but Wheels successfully lobbied Monty much to Harry’s displeasure. Not sure if that is true or not.

Franzkie is fantastic – one of the best in the business and I guy I can see myself listening to for 30 years. Anderson is not a great announcer but he pairs extremely well with Franzkie – he’s the ultimate local guy announcer. I am thinking about simulcasting games in my house so I can listen to these guys because . . . . the TV guys are AWFUL. Matthews is a nice man but a dreadful announcer and not insightful. Wheels is a pompous know-it-all – he tries to talk as if he played the game. He actually says some things that are accurate and occasionally insightful but he’s so utterly obnoxious that it doesn’t matter. McCarthy is mediocre – a guy who was at the right place at the right time and now has himself an apparent lifetime gig that should belong to Franzkie, the rightful heir to the Kalas throne.
Now back to baseball.

+1 on all counts, especially the description of LA. He’s not a great color guy, but he’s a great partner for Franzke, and he has enough of a history with the franchise that he’s a great fit in the market. I am comfortable saying that Franzke is better than McCarthy, but otherwise it’s hard to judge McCarthy as long as he’s stuck working with Wheels and Sarge.

The thing is, you won’t hear LA bragging about his 33 inning scoreless streak on the air. I’ve heard on quite a few occasions from Matthews how he hit 300 as a rookie in 1973 or whatever for the Giants, blah blah. Also remember almost pimping his kid on the air once cause he was a FA at that time and the Phils were short in the OF a few years ago.
McCarthy I think is brought down a lot with the garbage that he is with. He isn’t awesome, but I think he would be quite fine with a good guy to bounce off of. LA is just a great character, always remembered that about him when he played.

The great thing about Franzke and LA is that they have a great rapport. Everything flows and sounds very natural. All three TV guys lack that skill and rapport.

OT – has anyone ever heard Todd Kalas call a game? The occasional harkening to his father might be worth it. His role with the Rays doesn’t seem like it could be that satisfying. I was shocked to see that he’s been there 16 years.

T. Kalas used to do the Phils games and also the Mets games. He’s not bad and even sounds a lot like his Dad, but he’s no Harry, not even close.

It has long been known that Wheels has pictures on many of the top Brass in Phila. He is very good at making excuses when things don’t go right. The best way to avoid him is to listen to the radio broadcast. Larry A. and Franzke play off each other well. While they definately root for the home team, they will not hesitate to when errors are made and when a player needs to pick it up.
One more thought………..This series against to stinkin Pirates has led me to the following theory.
The current demise of the Phillies is RAs fault. It all went bad the day after he brought back Ed Wade. I still have my old “Fire Ed Wade” tee shirt. I wonder if I would be allowed to wear it at the CBP this year????????????

One MLB comment then I’ll stop.
It’s as if Charley is managing games with the intention of losing them. I’ve been a somewhat patient supporter of his in the past, but he’s going to single-handedly lose them a playoff spot with a big assist from RA. He really has to go.
LikeLike
I agree no doubt that RAJ is the major culprit of the state of the Phillies and Manual is right behind him. He has had too many free passes. The man can’t even complete a sentence. A shakeup is definitely needed. Time for some new blood, Sandberg as the Manager and Wheels as the GM, DAH!!! Just kidding about the latter suggestion. New blood from outside the organization for GM that isn’t “joined at the hip” with the current players would be refreshing.

I don’t usually get too caught up in being annoyed by broadcasters. But McCarthy constantly makes routine fly balls sound like they might be home runs. I know HK did that at times in his later years, but McCarthy isn’t that old. What’s his excuse?

He inherited what I would call the Musser curse, as he would always do the same thing when he used to announce.

If the product on the field was good nobody would be complaining about the announcers. But these are the seasons where you really miss Harry and Richie.

Had no idea I would start such a discussion, but I’m enjoying the comments. I think most of us grew up on Harry and Whitey and so I guess in part it is natural to be struggle some with the TMac Wheels tandem in comparison, but it is just horrific to listen to. I moved out of the area back in ’02 and used to get very upset that the MLB Extra Innings package didn’t broadcast all the Phils games with our broadcasters when Harry was alive. These days it is embarassing to say but I almost always try to DVR games and watch them later with the other teams broadcasters just to avoid Wheels.
I understand that Harry and Whitey were two in a billion and we shouldn’t expect to get the next Harry and Whitey, but when it gets to the point where I’m researching ways to DVR a damn radio feed from Philly to try and sync up with a tv feed to watch at night after work (currently living on the west coast), it has gone too far. McCarthy makes error after error after error, and that laugh is just too much. Wheels is wheels, we have all been complaining about that for decades now it seems so no need to relive all the reasons he needs to go, but I’ll just say the commenter above comparing him to an in law is just spot on. Sarge, I can live with because his mistakes are just funny to me alot of times. I don’t expect to learn baseball from him, he just is that nice 3 inning break from Wheels and after 3 inning of Wheels, I think it’s just nice to have anyone else on calling the game.
The most unfortunate thing about this is Philadelphia was always known as a sports town with some of the best broadcasters and announcers – Dave Zinkoff, Gene Hart, Harry Kalas, Merrill Reese, Richie Ashburn, and I’m probably forgetting a few more. To think we now have TMac, Wheels, and Sarge is very depressing.

Cameron Perkins has some interesting numbers. He doesn’t strike out (10%), doesn’t walk (2.4%), doesn’t hit line drives (9%), but hits for high average (.338) and good ISO (.200). BABIP is high (.368), but not ridiculous. Peculiar looking line so far.

If you look at his Purdue records, was the leader of his team in hitting and hits two or three of his years, and the Big Ten his last year. Had a 20-game hit streak his second year. So he does have the contact ability. I like his size. Reminds me of a poor man’s Corey Hart.
