I like that Kevin Brady threw five hittless, scoreless innings and struck out five. I don’t like that he walked five. I like that Larry Greene had a hit and a walk in four trips to the plate. I don’t like that the other two trips he struck out. I like sitting at the beach and walking my dogs and spanish food. I don’t like Delmon Young.

I like the theme Brad so I’ll piggy back on that. I like that Delvi continues to blow away hitters 2 K’s in 1 IP. Altherr continues to show up in the box score when I thought he was done. Collier with his 2nd HR and Cam Perkins with another strong game.

But what don’t you like? Is it Delmon Young?

HaHa! I’m not in the hate camp but I don’t believe either that he can play a passable RF. I do think he would give you a better AB than Mayberry. If I had to pick a few don’t likes its that Dugan is still not on the field and Rosin hasn’t been better than I thought he would be.

Don’t think we’ll get better AB’s from D Young, but I salute the optimism.

(Really. Who DOES like Delmon Young?) But…
I don’t like that most of the damage being done is from organizational filler, instead of “prospects.”

One question for you Rei, can he be possibly worse than JMJ is right now?
LikeLike
Worse than JMJ is right now? You mean like the small sample .880 OPS he has. Yeah it’s very likely Young doesn’t hit that well. It’s also pretty much a lock he plays worse defense than Mayberry. So yes he will be worse than JMJ is right now.
LikeLike
Chris, are you JMJ’s agent or have you not paid attention to the fact that the pitchers all season are going around other hitters to pitch to him?
LikeLike
Look I don’t think JMJ is anything resembling a long term solution buy you said could Delmon Young possibly be worse than what JMJ is doing right now. The answer is yes. As I noted it’s a small sample but right now (aka the early season) is always a small sample. JMJ is due for regression because his K rate is pretty high and his BABIP is in the .400s but that will happen in the future and not right now. Do you think Delmon Young will have an .880 OPS?

Chris, I don’t know but we won’t know until he actually plays for us and we will find out..

I don’t like RAJ and Charlie. They are, in that order, responsible for the mess the Phillies march out to the field each day, with a pardon for the pitching.

Both of Collier’s HR’s he blasted them, the first one got out in a hurry and last nights was a bomb.

Is it time that we start considering Ryan O’Sullivan a major league potential prospect? I know he is a sinker/slider middle reliever but you cannot deny the sub 1 era.
LikeLike
I find it hard to value MiLB ERA – so much bad fielding and questionable scoring and generally not worrying about outcome as much as process to consider it – but his story is an unusual one. He didn’t have a complete college career due to playing the field and then transferring, and so he’s bound to be behind his draft cohort developmentally, (though he does have a pedigree, as his brother is [or was] also a professional pitcher).
IMO, it’s probably going to be hard to tell until he’s consistently facing higher level hitters. You’d like to see his walks stay no higher than where they are, around 3 per 9 is ok, especially for a reliever. He’s definitely not a strike-out guy, but for what might amount to a low-leverage right-handed bullpen guy, if he can keep the ball on the ground, there are worse things than not striking out a ton of guys.
Whether any of that gives him value as a prospect, I don’t know. For now, I’d say he has very little prospect value, and I probably wouldn’t rank him anywhere in my organizational top 50 – he was #63 this winter, though a couple guys have dropped out or down ahead of him via trade or being sent back to XST, (JRod, Tyler Greene, Kyrell Hudson), and probably at least Nick Hernandez and Seth Rosin have leap-frogged him, (and maybe Anthony Hewitt – though that’s another story altogether and it’s still very early).
So there’s my take.

Dugan must still be hurt because he’s not even playing down here at EST, I saw him bat once and heard that he had played in a road game, but it’s been close to a week and no Dugan. Kevin Walter pitched yesterday, missed his 1st inning and his second was bad, a lot of baserunners and a 2 run double and he only got 2 outs before he hit his pitch limit. 3rd inning not much better, 2 run HR, but at least he got 3 outs. Started the 4th got an out, gave up a hit then Green booted a grounder that put runners on 1st and 3rd, then was lifted for Ron Mendez who went 2 and a 1/3 innings who looked much better, but he did give up a run of his own. Jesen Therrien followed, didn’t see his entire outing but what I did see wasn’t good, giving up few hits, even though they weren’t really crushed, and a run. Offensively Cozens had 2 hits, a single and a hard hit grounder down the 1st baseline that went for a triple. Kyrell Hudson homered but Green went FO and K, Pullin FO and Grullon GO. There’s video at: http://www.youtube.com/user/TheGkita

You have to root for Hudson to turn it around at the plate. Three tools wasted if he can’t get on base somehow.

I caught wind of that rumor from just mentions on Twitter, but nothing official. It has to be hard to feel like you’re not progressing and I wouldn’t begrudge him a couple days to consider whether he’s not better suited for “civilian” life, or whatever you would call it for a ballplayer.

Love hearing about the XST updates. Lakewood has been a bit of a downer, aside from a couple of prospects. Maybe the Williamsport crew will make us a little more hopeful about some of the prospects and our younger farm players. Gkit just looked at the your youtube shots from yesterday and looked like Green actually went FO and single. Did I miss an AB? Cozens is impressive.

I like to think that Delmon Young’s 4-5 was the direct result of being protected in the lineup by Maikel “Jack Schmidt” Franco (patent pending).
I don’t like Roman Quinn’s incredible shrinking batting average (although I can’t remember the last time I saw an E6 in Lakewood).

I don’t like Walding starting hot like last year and then now slowly sinking again. I LOVE Altherr’s progress so far.
I really don’t like what our GM has done since taking over. 2008 champs comprised of mostly home grown talent – Utley, Howard, Rollins, Hamels, Myers, Madson, Ruiz and trickled in with minor signings and findings – Werth, Vic, Blanton. 5 years later we have a brutal lineup and a below average (being nice) farm system. How much longer does he get away with this? Does the low attendence make the Owner’s pay attention?
Sorry for the Free AEC style rant which i’ve never done but I’m just frustrated that right now I hate watching my favorite team playing my favorite sport.

The whole reason we are here is because we paid to keep that 2008 nucleus together and fill in the holes by trading prospects. It was a gamble to get in as many playoff runs as possible with that core. Obviously now is the time to pay the piper. But this is normal in baseball, its very rare to maintain a consistently winning franchise over the long haul. The Cards are the best at it. Dont worry though, this will not be a long rebuild. Look at the Red Sox this year for an example.

It certainy doesn’t have to be a long rebuild, but I sure don’t trust Amaro orchestrating it.

Brady has been really wild compared to last season. I expect his walks to decrease. At least he’s not giving up any hits so far. I still think he has a chance to become the next Adam Morgan fast-riser.

I have to say, I don’t like that anyone thinks JMJ could be anything less then a bat off the bench or spot starter in RF. Sample size? I don’t wan to hear it after several years in the bigs, he is what he is. Better then Young defensively yes for sure, better hitter then young? Did JMJ ever come close to 110 RBI’s in a season? If he can play outfield and get his legs back enough Young will hit better then most anyone in the phillies lineup, thats the one thing he can do is hit. Has anyone paid attention to the run production from the phillies outfield? brown/revere/jmj ugh!!!! I’m not saying Young will be a gold glover, but if he can give the phillies 3 ab’s a game he will help them. They need a righthanded bat big time! Young is what he is, but he unfortunately is better then what they have now.
Oh by the way i do like hearing about Biddle in a good way, love to see a prospect continue to move forward !

DYoung had one good year and that was three years ago.
Career numbers are pretty comparable:
Young: .284/.317/.425.; Mayberry: .255/.316/.452;

Thank you.
People can keep saying Delmon Young is a good hitter until they’re blue in the face, but that’s not going to make it true. The biggest difference between Young and Mayberry offensively is that Young has been given more at-bats so his counting stats are higher.
LikeLike
MD, a 30 point batting average difference is comparable? There comes a point where people need to drive in runs and stop worrying about OPS stats.
LikeLike
If you’re worried about driving in runs, then you might want the guy who hits for more power. Mayberry’s career ISO: .197; Young: .141.
Young has hit a home run ever 40 plate appearances in his career. Mayberry has hit one every 25 plate appearances.
And besides, as Mds pointed out, despite the difference in batting average, they get on base the same amount.

But their OBP is the same and Mayberry has the higher OPS.
So hitting is close to a wash.
In regards to OF Defense, Mayberry is vastly better.

I feel bad for Darin Ruf. He picked a horrible time to essentially have the only slump of his minor league career. He might be overmatched at AAA but I doubt it. Hopefully, he’ll turn it around soon – I think he can really hit, he’s just got to stop pressing.

Agree that if Ruf can play a passable LF and provide consistent power he can be a inexpensive asset to the Phillies.

I agree. He has had early slumps before, but has responded with great rebounds from those slumps. He should do the same this year. I wish he were hot first instead of slumping when his team mates usually slump. Feast or famine!
