Nothing interesting happened last night unless you count Jesse Biddle striking out 16 of the 24 men he faced. I did the math in my head…that’s a fairly good rate.

I think he could’ve stretched that second double into a triple. Slacker…

He just looks so athletic out there too. Could even tell from his swing that he was a pitcher. Make up is so important in the development of players and he seems to have it in spades.

That breaking ball was straight up nasty. Eventually, even when they knew it was coming they couldn’t hit it. I also loved the way he worked the fastball inside and tight on some of the righty batters. Reports are that he has some good tailing movement on his fastball. Having watched him I know that he is not afraid to battle inside and break them off. Fantastic performance. This kid looked poised and ready.
LikeLike
Agreed. The fastball has late movement, he hides it well, locates it well and can throw it with an upward trajectory that makes it nearly impossible to hit. At worst, it is an above average pitch, but it’s nearly plus. The curve is flat out nasty – probably among the best in professional baseball right now. It’s that good.

Yesterday I bemoaned that we didn’t have elite prospects. I may have been too hasty in my conclusion.

watching the video that curve is straight nasty! Happy to be wrong about Biddle’s elite status 🙂

The curve is an elite major league pitch. It would be in the top 5 in the MLB – it’s that good.
LikeLike
The curve is filthy, the fastball has added some late movement as he’s advanced and refined his mechanics (while maintaining solid velocity), and he throws a change and slider that were both very effective last night (supposedly the change has a real shot at being a third plus pitch and the slider is there to keep hitters honest). His post-game interview was similarly impressive, he has a really good demeanor and seems to fully comprehend the art of pitching.

however, curveball looks nasty and fastball has some giddyup. He also appears to have some swagger. That autograph he gave my boys in Clearwater just went up in value a tad…

So I’ll avoid the ridiculous statement of call him up now, to AAA or MLB, but if he keeps pitching like this, why not consider him for a AAA promo mid season?
LikeLike
If he keeps pitching like this he probably will be called up to AAA by mid season.
LikeLike
Possibly. But he needs innings and experience which he can get at AA this season. No reason to promote him this year unless they decide to fast track him.
LikeLike
it’s interesting to compare him to Cole hamels, who pitched a total fo 3 games in AA and 3 games in AAA. His last two months in the minors came after a years mostly lost to a broken hand. He rocketed from Lakewood to Clearwater to Scranton, completely dominating at each level, and arrived in Philly in May. Give Jesse another month or two. There’s no hurry, but also no reason to keep him in AA if he continues to dominate.
LikeLike
Keeps pitching like this? Haha… if his next 8 starts are identical (16k’s 2BB, 1R) to this he’ll be on the big club for his 9th start, I promise you. Realistically, that would be imposisble, so mid-season AAA promotion, while unlikely, is definately not impossible.

The hitters caught looking pretty knew it too, can’t really argue the knee-buckling curve.
LikeLike
I was thinking the same thing. In the other thread someone noted that there were so many strike outs in the game for both teams the ump may have played a big part. Watching the video though the players caught looking were walking back to the dug out before the ump even rang them up.
LikeLike
Absolutely no reason to rush him, hes not even 22…
Even if Hamels or Lee are hurt and the Phils drop out of the race.
As we saw last night, Pettibone looked pretty good, but there are also guys like Morgan and Martin that need a look as well. Way before Biddle.
May not have any position players, but it seems like there are definitely a few arms to rebuild with.

Zach Collier hit a home run, that’s the main positive I take away from the Reading box score.
Just kidding! One night does not a projection change, but still, if he keeps pitching anywhere close to this I think Biddle’s going to make a big move up the prospect ranking lists. A 2015 rotation that includes Hamels, Morgan, Biddle and Lee could be a pretty nice development.
LikeLike
Lee will probably traded for prospects this season. However a top 3 of Hamels, Morgan, Biddle might be a pretty decent little rotation, along with a 2-3 starter in free agency and Pettibone working the 5th spot, it would be a pretty good pitching nucleus going forward. Who knows, maybe Martin figures out some control as well.

I would keep Lee one more year. He can invaluable as Morgan and Biddle reach bigs. Think Hamels, Lee, Morgan, Biddle as Hendrick & Pettibone battle for #5.
LikeLike
I don’t know, I think I’d rather trade him a year too early than a year too late.
If we stay healthy this year and still fall out of contention, the fire sale will be on.
LikeLike
The chance of a fire sale is, and should be, zero.
LikeLike
Fire sales in baseball occur almost always for financial, rather than competitive reasons. And fire sales rarely make competitive sense.

How about Lee to someone who has to also assume the Howard contract. Ie do what Boston did last year and dump a bad contract by trading a top player. I mean, if we got Howard off the books, and Lee and Chase and Halliday, we would have $100 mil. to spend. We could re-sign Chase, but still have a ton left in the off season to start over.

I wouldn’t say “probably” one way or the other. Too many unknowns at this point.
I tend to be on the pessimistic side in terms of the return, but I could be wrong. And of course one needs to make a distinction between what one considers likely and what one considers desirable. Me, I would only trade him (this year, anyway) for a top 50 prospect.
It also occurs to me that, assuming continued health, and given his contract status, he might have as much trade value in 2014 as he will this year.
If he is traded, I’m even more inclined to advocate re-signing Halladay. A rotation of Hamels/Morgan/Biddle/Pettibone/?? in, say, 2015 might be pretty good (not as good as the Hamels/Lee/Halladay rotation in its brief prime, but that was, for a year anyway, an historically great rotation), I think it might be a mistake to go with 3 rookies or near rookies in the rotation in 2014.

I’m not sure if they were all in the rotation at the same time, but the 09 Phillies had Hamels, Happ, Moyer and Lee.

Good point. But I guess you got to go to war with the army you have.
I’m not sure Lee’s going to get traded. That would be an acknowledgement that the team needed to go into full-scale rebuilding mode, and I don’t think that’s going to happen under the current front-office management. If Amaro gets fired after this season, as seems possible if things go badly, then maybe. Actually, if things go badly (a 70-something win season seems quite possible with a few bad breaks) this organization could be almost unrecognizable next year. A lot of key components (Manuel, Utley, Chooch) are reaching their sell-by dates.

Phils are 9-11 and 1.5 games out of the wild card. 142 games to go. No one should be talking trades right now. Their starting pitchers have been pretty good, hitting needs to come around, bullpen has been getting better. Patience folks, patience.

Asche seems to be following the path he took at Reading- start slow, then get red hot. What we need to see now are some more XBHs.
Hewitt’s BA is falling fast but as of now he’s still walking more and K’ing less than he did last year.

It looks like Cody Asche should be ready to contribute to the big team next year as the starter or in a platoon situation. Tommy Joseph may take a bit longer than we would like.

I’m curious why people think Biddle shouldn’t be aggressively promoted if he’s dominant for another 8-10 starts in Reading. At that point he’ll have thrown over 400 minor league innings. Some guys are ready at that age/experience level. Not every pitcher’s prime is from 24-29.
We probably should take Biddle’s performance with a slight grain of salt since Harrisburg has the worst offense in the EL, but if he’s still destroying AA on July 1st why not bring him up?
LikeLike
Cole is a good example he logged only 201 MiLB innings before joining the MLB at age 22 but in those innings he had a .95 WHIP and 12.4 K/9. He was clearly ready.
Jesse will probably get to pitch most of the year with Reading and then maybe just maybe get a start or two at the Bank. And get every opportunity to start in the rotation in 2014.

Cole- plus a 1.45 ERA, 3.73 SO/BB rate, etc. He completely dominated at every level.
Biddle needs to keep working on his BB rate. He can do that in Reading as well as anywhere

Hard to believe he could look better than his last two Clearwater starts last season (which I witnessed), but I guess he just did and against better competition. Great point by the poster that said he just faced the same team 6 days prior. Amazing also that two starts before, he had 0 K’s. Go Jesse!!

For some unknown (or mystical) reason, this writer named Biddle our best #1 draft choice in many a year soon after he was drafted. (Post Hamels) After watching him give good but not great pitching, I didn’t know if he was going to live up to those expectations. But I did say about 2-3 weeks ago that he would add 2 MPH to his FB this season….without any real justification for saying so. Also, that he would move up to within the best 20 prospects.
Well now that “fantasy” is coming true. Mr. Kershaw will have a twin in Philly soon enough.
Query: do you think his next start will draw a decent crowd? And who among us will go to represent the rest of us and report back?
Go Jesse!

we still need someone in the system who hits home runs maybe that’s art Charles?

Not likely. Maikel Franco will be the first guy up with good power and sticking potential out of the org. Asche will likely make the big leagues before him but he’s not a home run hitter.
LikeLike
Charles has an undistinguished minor league career, having spent his first 3 years in short season ball. Now he is 22 and in low A and not putting up the sort of OPS that suggests you’re going to play 1B in the bigs. I think he’s even subject to Rule 5 after this year.
LikeLike
I don’t think the Rule 5 draft will be much of a problem. Not many teams select 1st baseman in A Ball. Heck, Kelly Dugan is eligible for the Rule 5 after the season too. He isn’t going to be selected either.

2012 JuCo 16th round pick. Had a less than remarkable year in Williamsport last year, though he only walked 5 batters in 45 innings. That’s quite good. I think you mistyped the stat, though – he’s 15/3 k/bb this year so far, not 25. 15 is fine, though 3 bb in 13 innings isn’t nearly as impressive as his walk rate last season.
