Instant Reaction: For the start on Monday this was the best decision. Morgan was out of the picture for this start and while Martin has the stuff the command is still needing a lot. Pettibone brings more to the table than Cloyd and will likely have the opportunity to stick around if he can pitch well. If he cannot stick they will have the opportunity to mess with the rotation enough to bring up Adam Morgan.
This probably signals the end of Cloyd with the Phillies, because he has now been passed by the next wave of pitchers. With the hot starts by Savery and Robles, Cloyd likely is now towards the top of the list on players most likely to be removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Adam Morgan and eventually Cody Asche and Tommy Joseph.
Impact:
Pettibone: Pettibone is a solid pitcher, he will show you a low-90s fastball with some natural sink, an average slider that can sometimes get loopy, an in progress cutter, and a plus changeup. The command is above average and he has a good feel for pitching. Pettibone looked like he was major league ready heading into the year and he will get the opportunity to prove it. He is a #4 starter long term who has the frame to be a workhorse if he can get his command and pitch count under control.
Adam Morgan: This changes nothing, he wasn’t ready rotation wise to take the start and the fact that he wasn’t on the 40 man made it an easy decision to not push it. If Pettibone stumbles the Phillies will have the opportunity to alter the rotation enough to move him up into the spot.
Ethan Martin: Still needs more polish and command of the control. A full year in AAA is probably best for him, but he is not out of the question if the other two stumble.
Tyler Cloyd: He had his shot last fall and wasn’t great and then struggled in the spring and into the season. There is nothing more he can really do to improve, so he is going to have to prove it stick around the organization.
Yay!

Yea best choice to see what he’s got for Monday. Rosenberg was the other one, but he didn’t have quite the best big league success last year.

So that’s what?… five pitchers from the 2008 draft, to make an appearance for the Phillies. Plus three more from that draft traded away for regulars.

You did count Rosenberg as an appearance last year?

You are right. I forgot about Rosenberg’s forgettable performance. So Worely, Stutes, Schwimer, Rosenberg, Cloyd and Pettibone made performances, while Knapp, Cosart and May were traded for regulars. No stars, but a lot of value.

And of course, one of the oddest of oddities of the pitchers from that draft class…Mike Cisco was traded for nothing. I guess that’s not proper terminology…’traded’…I guess he was actually a ‘gift’.

Julio Rodriguez was traded too

Yes….but as VOR stated up front….trades for ‘regulars’.

Not a fan of pettibone, but the phillies have limited options, martin isnt ready, and morgan couldnt start tomorrow, so its pettibone by default, he cant be any worse than what we have seen so far, from this staff

Agree that this was the best short term move though they could easily go to Morgan in a start or two if it does not work out. Not too worried about starting either player’s service time clock as they will both probably go back and forth between the majors and AAA a few times over the next couple of years.

Well, if anything, Rod Nichols is the bullpen coach for the Phils. He should be able to be a positive influence on Pettibone since he was hit pitching coach last year.
