Box Score Recap – 4/18/2013

That’s some hittin’ for Lehigh Valley. Welcome back Kenny Giles – faced 5 men, struck out 3. And welcome back Larry Greene, Jr. – 3 K and 1 BB in 4 PA. At least he saw some pitches.

Here’s the affiliate Scoreboard from MiLB.

  1. Random thoughts: Good to see Broussard get in a game finally, Inch is doing a great job so far, Walding keeps hitting, Asche and Gillies both have a great game that they can hopefully build on, O’Sullivan looks too good for A ball and should be up at AA, Giles got 3 Ks but gave up a homer as he learns that location is just as important as speed, maybe LGJ was just tracking the ball in his 1st game…, I think the bloom is off the rose that is Tyler Knigge, what’s wrong with Stutes?, and Morgan struggled with 100 pitches in 5 innings but only allowed 1 run.
Who will start Monday in Philly? Since Morgan pitched yesterday and won’t be ready by Monday, will it be Cloyd? Martin? Pettibone? Rosenberg? Valdes? I’ll vote that its Valdes with Morgan taking the next start.

  2. Josh Fields needs to play IB or 3B to see if he can help the big club as a reserve . Using him as a DH is a waste . He was once a big time prospect so the Phillies need to know if he can help them .

    1. Barring an injury, there’s no chance that Fields will be in Philly to play this year. Frandsen has that spot locked up.

  3. Don’t look now, but another “0”fer from Logan Moore, but don’t worry… he will continue to get all the reps in Clearwater. This situation is an absolute joke. Stumpo and Ludy must be getting very frustrated wondering what its going to take to get an opportunity, and who could blame them.

    1. I have no idea if Logan Moore is getting opportunities based on nepotism, as you have claimed. I don’t know, so you could be right. But I have seen scouting reports that say Logan Moore has a great arm, and has a high defensive upsise, while teams ‘run wild’ on Josh Ludy. There is more to catcher development than, offensive productio.

      1. Don’t look know VOR, but Moore is leading the team in errors with 2 in his first 10 games. I don’t know how many pass balls or caught stealings for that matter, but I tend to follow the box scores for all the minor league affilitates each day and I honestly don’t recall any overwhelming defensive stats on this kid. If there was anything positive I’m sure it would have influenced my opinion. I realize that most organizations at the pro level value defense over offense at the catcher position, but I just don’t understand how they keep rolling with him. I don’t have enough of a sample on Ludy to know if teams would “run wild” on him, but there is enough evidence on Stumpo to know that he should be in there.

        1. I have to say I’m pretty surprised that “Free Bob Stump” is actually becoming a thing.

          1. It’s not really a thing. It’s one guy who doesn’t know how interpret stats and another guy with a connection to one of the backup catchers, hijacking threads.

            1. Meh. It must be frustrating. Your kid (or relative, whomever) is actually performing better and doing everything that’s asked of him, and then there’s another kid who is performing worse, but because some scout or coach somewhere thinks his tools are better, he gets chance after chance.

Some people will say that that’s life, and I suppose it is, but scouts and coaches are wrong often enough that I could see feeling like your kid got hosed because a coach was playing favorites.

            2. True, but it doesn’t really merit going on internet message boards and slagging the other player. Unfortunately, bad makeup tends to run in families (something some of the parents on this site would be well-advised to remember).

  4. Does anyone know if Edgar Duran is on the Phillies radar as a legit prospect. He is only 22 years old and has quietly and successfully move up through the system

    1. I would only say they are paying attention. I’ve seen no reports that say he is a defensive wizard and prior to this torrid start his pro career offensively was mediocre at best. If some type of light came on for him with the bat we’ll know after a few hundred more PA’s.

      1. I agree – I like the guy as someone to watch, but it’s hard to look at him and think anyone’s expecting him to break out. If he hits as much better (there’s some phrasing for ya) this year compared to last as he did last year compared to the year before, then who knows? He could be for real. Last week I asked Reading beat guy Anthony Burkhart what he thinks of the glove and he said what I figured – a little too early to judge it.

    1. True, but he’s probably closer to being right about Pettibone than those who think he can be a fourth starter.

      1. He may be right but he, and a few others, are way too obsessive in their arguments against prospects. Also, some of these guys and the lack of understanding of age vs. level or SSS is disturbing.

        1. Agreed. There’s a difference between being realistic about a prospect’s chances and openly rooting against them to show you were right about someone.

      2. The thing I find funny is his description and then his message. So his quote was:

“He had no secondary pitches and his fastball was maybe 93 – 94 MPH and straight with some life.”

In context this was spring training so I doubt that he was throwing the changeup much, and the consensus is that it is a 60 pitch, the slider is inconsistent sitting mostly average. The walk rate has been concerning but most of the damage is small sample size with opposing batters having a .480 BABIP against him. In other words it hasn’t been good, but far from the disaster that it could have been. But lets look at FreeAEC’s “scouting report” combined with what we know:

50-55 Fastball – Sits 91-92 touching 94, with some life
55-60 Changeup – Looks like a fastball out of the hand with some life to it
45-55 Slider – Inconsistent, does not always have sharp break

That folks is a #4 starter. He is going to struggle when the command is off because the stuff isn’t great, but FreeAEC just gave us a scouting report on a #4 starter.

    2. How come he stopped posting here. He still seems passionate about Phillies, he even has a couple of site dedicated to show the public how cheap the Phils are on their drafts.

      1. He is passionate….but sometimes goes over the top in discussions with fellow posters. State your point, agree to disagree, then move on….he couldn’t always move on. Whenever you saw “$$$ Montgomery” in a comment in bold, you knew AEC was back on the board.

  5. Stopped by the XST games today and as soon as I got there Zach Green hit a HR. Then few minutes later on the other field I saw Andrew Pullin rip a triple to left center. That was pretty much the offense from the prospects as Lino K’d and hit a weak blooper to the first baseman, Cozens K’d (only saw 1 of his ABs), Pujols hit a hard GO and Grullon hit the ball hard to right center but the RF made a diving catch to rob him of a double. Saw 2 innings of Musser’s 3 inning stint, in the 1st one he went K(nice CB for called strike 3) FO, S,W,S which scored a run as Delmon Young threw out a runner at 3rd. I missed his 2nd inning but the 3rd inning went 2 straight weak ground singles, a K then a 361 DP. He was throwing 90-92 and looked good with his offspeed pitches. 1. Good, no; average at best, but the problem I have seen is he is not hitting. Now I have not seen all of his ABs, but I’ve seen at least 20-25 and I still have not seen him pull or hit a ball with any authority at all. He has had some hits but they are bloopers to RF or “seeing eye ” grounders through the 34 hole. Now the pitching down here at this time is obviously not very good and they can be quite wild, so the only explanation I can make is he’s afraid of getting hit and hurt(like Chooch was hit on Friday, but thankfully not hurt). So maybe we can hope when he starts seeing better pitching he’ll improve, but right now it looks real ugly down here.

  6. Franco and Hernandez… continue to progress and impress. Nick H. could see a call-up to Reading before July if he maintains this production.
