    1. Stumpo deserves to be playing. Hard worker who made the most of his first opportunity of the year. Good for him! 7 games for Clearwater so far this season and Stumpo and Ludy with only 1 game each. Moore is getting all the run in Clearwater and I don’t know why. Weak stick and only average defense. Daddy must not have been around last night so they gave someone else a chance.

      1. What have you heard about Moore’s defense? I can only assume he’s a potential gold glover because otherwise I don’t get why he would be playing over a better offensive player who’s the same age. He does have an athlete’s frame, so maybe he’s the catcher version of the toolsy OFs the Phils love.

  1. Art Charles hitting a mere .107 and Schwimer on the DL (i’m sure he is pleased with that). I expected a bit more out of Art given his age.

        1. For asking to be treated fairly as injured when he claimed to be injured? That makes someone a first class jerk? Or is there something else I am missing?

          1. I wouldn’t go that far, but that wasn’t the only or even the most serious incident. His rants about autograph seekers were, bending over backwards to be kind, tone deaf at least.

          2. The list with this guy goes on and on. Its not as much about whether he was injured as how he should have handled it. All of us, no matter what we do for a living, face politics and dynamics in the workplace, and we all have to deal with challenges, and he failed that test badly. His attitude in multiple situations that gave the impression he thinks he’s better than everyone else, turned me off from him. My opinion is that he is a jerk.

            Like

            1. Yeah, I’ll backtrack on my outrage at your comment. I forgot about the autograph bit, which when combined with going to Jim Salisbury about his grievance, probably earns him a bit of what you said.

            2. My favorite Schwimer moment of all time was his first game when the guy hit the ball 450 ft out to dead center and Schwimer pointed up in the air when he hit it like it was a pop up.

          1. People hate him because he insulted ‘Adult autograph seekers’ a couple years ago. I don’t believe many would hold his bad decision, to go public about his DL situation against him, had the autgraph rant never occurred.
I understand his postion on both issues, so I don’t get the hate, but he should have been smart enough to keep some of that to himself.

            1. I actually think it’s pretty counterproductive. Say what you will about Schwim, but he was way more open and communicative with fans–specifically, with us–than any other player ever to come through the system. The autographs post might have been tone-deaf, but it probably reflects the private views of a lot of players. The twitter thing pissed off the front office, but at least he was passing along news (or congratulations, really) to the fans. It was a stupid mistake, but it came from an instinct we should be encouraging. The fact that some people seem to hold his willingness to speak his mind against him, to the point that some people are happy that he’s injured, is not only childish but counterproductive. I’m sure the example of what happened to Schwim assures that any other prospect will think twice, or four times, before publicly sharing any thoughts deeper than “I’m just trying to execute my pitches, if I execute my pitches I will be fine”.

              Like

            2. Yeah, that sharing the news on Twitter was nothing to me. It was maybe careless and breaking the rules, but there’s nothing to be ticked about there for fans. The team was probably right to be ticked, as that’s not his place to talk about ransactions before the team announces them.

  2. Wooo baby, let’s go Franco. He’s really supplying some power out there. I really do hope he tears Clearwater up and can maybe get a call up to Reading

  3. Great night for Maikel Franco. I have a feeling I’m going to be writing that sentence more than a few times this year.

Altherr’s hot start is encouraging too. I’ve always had a soft spot for him, and I could see him turning into this year’s Collier, a guy who plays his way back onto the radar screen.

In sort of a similar category: Perci Garner’s early season success.

    1. Franco’s OPS jumped something like 200 points after last night. He’s definitely showing he can hit the ball a ton, and he’s made contact pretty consistently — with a good BB/K rate — since early last summer. But I think what’s most exciting about Franco is the strong defensive reports at third. He could be the system’s most complete prospect by the end of the season.

      1. He just kills the ball. I think I posted this last year but I was at a game in Lakewood last season and he hit a ball foul that had to go 450 feet. The crowd awwww’d at the ball, for a foul ball it really showed me the power potential he has, very impressive. This kid is one to watch.

        1. If he doesn’t have the best bat speed in the system, I can’t imagine who does. And it’s natural, too. It’s not like he has to try extra hard for it.

    2. I have seen Altherr in ST for the past 2 years. This year, he no longer looked like a baby faced kid. He looked like a man who had packed on muscle, filled out his frame (with room for more) and had an athleticism I had not seen in prior years. He also happens to be a quality guy…nice and humble. I’m rooting for him for sure.

    1. Yeah a little bit of tough luck for Watson. 3 infield hits, another 1 through the hole due to the 2nd baseman covering on a steal and a ball got by Tocci on an aggressive attempt by him on a ball in front.

  4. Altherr is a tremendous athlete. someone wrote the other day that a player’s ceiling never changes, just his probability of reaching it. Altherr always had a pretty high ceiling, and the last year or so he’s showing some chance of reaching it. Hope he stays in CF.

  5. Altherr having a Collier type breakout season would be more encouraging, simply because he has a much higher ceiling based on tools.

    1. That would be Collier-2012, which was really largely Collier-AFL. Unfortunately, Collier not starting out at Reading with a Collier-2012-type of season is SSS.

  6. Altherr is a tremendous athlete with a high ceiling. Someone wrote the other day that a player’s ceiling never changes, just his probability of reaching it. Altherr’s performance over the last year or so is encouraging, and is increasing that probability. Very encouraging! I do love Altherr and Franco on this team, but a lot of the offensive success inthis series is because the Cub’s pitching is pretty awful.

  7. Franco showing off his plus power tool early. Franco has not hit a single since game 1. All Doubles and Homers, his last 7 hits. Pretty good XBH%.

  10. I thought Altherr was one of the ‘athletes’ the Phillies are known for drafting. And it appears that he may have above average skills across the board without any elite skill. I suppose his speed may be plus which allows him to stay in CF. Like most prospects, the question is if the power will show up.

From an ‘athlete’ perspective, I’d figure Gillies, Cozens, Hewitt, and maybe Jiwan James are better athletes. It would be great if Altherr becomes a consistent stat stuffer as well.

  11. Garner is still an interesting guy to follow. Due to his age and injury history he will have to prove it at every level. He will have not trade value for those reasons but will he need to be protected? I doubt he stays as a starter since Phillies may want to fast pace him.

  12. Seth Rosin going for Reading tonight. I think he’s flying under the radar coming into this season and wouldn’t be surprised if he has success at AA.

    1. Great trivia question who is the only player to be traded for two cy young award Pitchers in separate transactions before ever playing a big league game….

and I didn’t do any fact checking to make sure that is a true statement!

  14. I know its really SSS, but I’m wondering how the Phils are gonna handle Garner this year if he up being on a tear. He’s definitely older for High A at 24, I’m wondering if he could get a call up to Reading this year if he puts it together for a few months.

Don’t think really anyone mentioned it, but a sorta left out guy (in my eyes), is Castro, who is off to a pretty good start in his first foray into AAA. He just really seems to get overlooked a ton on this site for some reason, just my two cents. Good to see Ruf off to a good start as well, the homers will come soon and frequent.

Oh and for you Hunter Pence trade fans out there…..

    Santana (AA)- 7G/23AB, .304, 2HR, 5RBI, 4 2B, 10(!) K’s, 6BB
    Cosart (AAA)- 9 IP, 4H, 1BB, 12K, 1ER

Alas, all in all, its just SSS, I don’t look into stats too greatly till Mid/End of May at least. There’s guys struggling, but a lot are adjusting to a higher level, especially those at AAA.

    1. Santana is the player that peeves me about that trade because I am pretty sure had Amaro said “No Eddy you don’t get Santana too” they still would have done the deal!

      1. I want to say Valle was the only available position guy they excluded from the PTBNL list, (pls correct me if I’m wrong). That’s gonna burn if Santana can hit at high levels without striking out a ton.

        1. The key will be on the IF for the K’s (he’s never K’d less than 135 times in full season ball yet). He’s up to 230 pounds now, so he’s not the skinny 17/18 year old kid we saw. Mind you he’ll play most of this year at age 20 at AA, which isn’t too shabby, and he still has plenty of time to work the kinks out.

      2. This Sanatana is a great loss meme on this site, is pretty interesting. He is the Astros 11th rated prospect, and if he was still with Phillies he would be no higher than the #9 prospect based on the grade given by BA. Sanatana is just inventory. He doesn’t profile as a future star.

        Like

        1. He has upside of a better-than-average MLB regular, IMO. He’s not a swing-first guy – he did draw a fair amount of walks in 2012, (10.5%), so his approach is probably fine, he just needs to perfect his swing. Fairly slim chance he makes his ceiling, but don’t you think it’s a little early to call a 20-21 yo power hitter at AA with a RF arm “inventory”? If he cuts his Ks down even into the mid-20s, his power will play in RF.

          Like

          1. “Inventory” is probably too harsh. I just don’t get the constant gnashing of teeth about the trade of Domingo Santana. You would think moving him was the worst trade of the decade, the way he is talked about.
Domingo Santana is rated as a “50” player (20-80 scale), with a “High” risk factor of ever reaching that ceiling. The Phillies have a half dozen guys just like him. He is not even rated as highly as Franco. The Phillies have nearly 15 guys looked at as potential “50” players. That type player isn’t worth all of the hand wringing.

            Like

            1. Yeah, and that is way too good for the 4th player throw-in on the trade. Nobody is claiming that Santana was the biggest loss in that deal. Singleton was a bigger loss and likely Cosart as well. We gave up WAY too much for Pence. It wasn’t the worst trade of the decade — that honor goes to the Garcia trade, but it was likely the second worst.

              Like

            2. I try not to think about how horrible that Garcia trade was, the White Sox then flipped him to Oakland for Swisher which wasn’t bad, but then got nothing from the Yankees for Swisher.

              Like

            3. The Phillies traded Singleton, Cosart, Zeid and Santana for 1 year of Pence and Tommy Joseph. Josh Zeid will never be a factor in the MLB. Cosart is a bullpen arm. Santana is a “high risk” to even be an average player and Jon Singleton has already failed 2 drug tests and is currently serving a 50 game suspenson. Yeah. That’s the 2nd worst trade of the decade (sic). You must not have noticed the Zach Wheeler for 2 months of Carlos Beltran, the same week. Wheeler is better than all of those guys combined.
Heck, Tommy Joseph is a better prospect than all of them, exept Singleton. When Jon Singleton becomes an Allstar 1st baseman, get back to me.

              Like

            4. I’m pretty sure he was saying it was the Phils’ second worst trade of the decade. Santana would probably be our #6 prospect right now, behind Morgan, Biddle, Quinn, Franco, and Joseph. You could make a case that he’s a better prospect than Joseph, although I don’t necessarily agree with that.

              Like

            5. Based on the “OFP” grades that BA assigned to all of the prospects prior to the 2013 season, Domingo Santana would be ranked 10th. In BA he would clearly be behind Biddle, Quinn, Joseph, Pettibone, Morgan, Martin, Asche, Franco and Ruf.
Domingo Santana has the same BA grade as Watson, Aumont, Valle, Walding, Wright and Giles (50 High).
A 50 high player is described as a 2nd division regular or late inning Reliever with a high risk of attaining that ceiling.

              Like

            6. In fairness to the second Pence trade, Rosin is probably just as good of a prospect as Zeid and we did get a few cost controlled years of Schierholtz back. I’m still puzzled why we let him go for nothing and kept Nix.

    2. You have to realize that the Astros AA team plays in a very hitter friendly park when you look at their numbers. I am not trying to underplay the progress or stats of Santana but take that into the equation.

      Like

      1. We can compare him to the league – use WOBA+, which says that as a 19/20 year old in a league where the average age was 22.6 yrs, he hit 18% better than the league average.

        Like

        1. Brad, what is WOBA+? I am not really into all these new statistics but I will take your word on Santana’s potential and hitting above league average.

          Like

          1. Weighted On Base Average, it is a metric that looks to combine how much more valuable a single is to a double (SLG says it is twice as valuable when in reality it is less than that) and and out to a walk and other things along those lines. The formula is:
            wOBA = (0.691×uBB + 0.722×HBP + 0.884×1B + 1.257×2B + 1.593×3B +2.058×HR) / (AB + BB – IBB + SF + HBP)

Essentially just weights each action. wOBA+ is when you take wOBA and you normalize it for league and park factors with 100 being average. So anything over 100 is above average and anything below is below league average. It is a quick way of comparing player contributions that is better than just OBP, SLG, or OPS

            1. I’m not against fancy stats, but I do have to wonder about how reliable park factors are when it comes to minor league stadiums. These numbers are only as good as their constants. I know that these calculations are still crude on the major league level, where there is a TON of available data, I’m skeptical about the Minors numbers, and there’s really no way to check them.
