Hot or Not, Week One

First edition of hot or not this season as we take a look at the period of 4/4 through 4/10.  Hitters must have a minimum of 12 AB’s to be considered.

Cesar Hernandez impressed at the plate and in the field this week while the Phils athletic outfielders struggled to start the season (Collier, Gillies, Mitchell, Hudson). Exciting starts for Percy Garner and SHane Watson, while the much talked about Lehigh Valley rotation makes up most of the “not hot” starters list.

  1. I finished watching the TV game . Gillies looks disinterested.. I liked Castro and Ruf. Morgan looked very efficient ,hitting spot after spot. I would like to see a WOW pitch later.

    1. Watched two Spring Training games where Gillies saw some action, probably no more than 4 or 5 of his ABs, but I was immediately taken aback by his defensive approach to hitting. Almost a two-strike approach the moment he walks into the box. He did slug .450 last year at Reading, though much of that a result of a lot of triples . . .

I have to say though; if he can’t reestablish himself as a threat to steal bases than it becomes hard to envision him as anything more than a 5th outfielder. Big year for Tyson. I’d like to see him reach 500 PAs and if he’s able to do that, accompany it with 20+ steals. Where’s Davey Lopes when you need him?

  2. Unfortunately, you have to get on base in order to steal and Gillies OBP sits at .167. In general, our center field prospects (Gillies, Collier, Hudson) are not hitting at all so far. However, it is early.

    1. At least Altherr is off to a nice start. I don’t know if he would have a chance to stick in CF long term, but it looks like he’ll be the CF when Dugan comes back.

      1. I don’t think Dugan’s presence makes Altherr the CF. It depends on Hudson, and how long he continues to get AB’s.

        1. I think Hudson is probably only getting regular ABs because Dugan is hurt. There’s not really anybody else to take his place, since Altherr, Hudson and Perkins are the only OFs listed on the roster who aren’t on the DL. When Dugan comes back, the best 3 OF prospects on the team are him, Altherr and Perkins.

Hudson can go back to Lakewood, since it’s not like he really “passed” that level last year. Or maybe he’ll stick around as a 4th OF and get occasional starts.

          1. I don’t know that you are correct in your assumption that Hudson is only getting AB’s due to Dugan’s absence. That assumes Dugan’s development is a priority over Hudson’s. Dugan is considered by the regulars on this site as being the better prospect, but Baseball America has Hudson as the better prospect. BA doesn’t pull that out of the air. They get a lot of those opinions directly from team scources. Either way, I’m not sure Hudson loses time directly to Dugan. I think if he loses time it will be based on the team coming to the conclusion that Hudson can’t play at that level.

            1. I believe Altherr was ranked #25, Hudson #30 and Dugan was unranked. I believe the organizational CF depth chart was: Tocci, Collier, Altherr, Gillies then Hudson.
Additionally: BA did not even rank Dugan on the team depth chart, as an Outfielder. They ranked him behind Serritella, as a 1B.

            2. I guess its a positional ranking since Hudson in center doesn’t have to hit like Dugan as a RF. Clearly head to head Dugan is the better hitter/player.

            3. While I’m not exactly surprised that BA would have Hudson ranked higher, based on ceiling I assume, I think anyone would have a hard time arguing that Hudson is more advanced than Dugan right now. Dugan’s OPS was almost .300 points higher than Hudson’s last year at the same level. If the team thinks Hudson needs the at-bats to develop, he can do it at Lakewood where he was terrible last year. People say Dugan strikes out too much, even for a guy with a bit of power, but Hudson struck out 6% more and has none. He was totally overwhelmed in Lakewood.

    2. Potential ‘1st OF call-up’, Derrick Mitchell, not getting on base much either. Though that has been typical for most of his time in the organization.
