Seems like Jesse Biddle did not have his best stuff last night. Zero Ks in 6 IP. Clearwater hitters pounded out 18 hits in an 11 innings win against Daytona, including Maikel Franco’s first bomb of the young season. And there was a bit of a…well…how do you put this??? Kerfuffle??? Yeah, a bit of a kerfuffle in that game. Sounds like fun.

I think Franco is off to a fine start, playing in a higher league, tough park for hitters I believe, still at a young age, and he only has one error I believe and has a few extra base hits and a few walks. Unfortunately I haven’t seen any of his games this year, but I think he remains one of the Phils best position prospects, with big upside.

saw franco sunday against dunedin and he was outstanding in the field. made a good backhand stop on a scorcher down the line and easily threw out the runner from his knees. saved ludy a throwing error by making a leaping catch on a steal of third( they were running wild on ludy) and made an excellent short hop pick on a tricky grounder. he has good hands and a plus arm. if the offense comes on like i think it will, he is the third baseman of the future. the phillies have some nice infield pieces coming along with franco, galvis, hernandez and asche, although none project to the utley, rollins, rolen quality.

Did you get a feel for what his range is like? I have heard he is fairly quick reaction wise, but there is no doubt that he is a 20 runner when underway so it gives me a slight pause on the defense
LikeLike
Matt – I saw him play maybe 3-4 games last year in Lakewood and I would concur with what was said above about him – has great hands and just seems very comfortable over there, like everything that happens does not phase him and he just seems very relaxed. It’s hard to assess range sometimes in only 3-4 games, but on the plays I saw he looks like he has very good reactions in both directions and he catches what he gets to. From what I saw for someone his age, I would guess he projects as either an above average defensive 3B or as high as a gold glove caliber third baseman. As for running the bases, he looks like he has very average speed, which won’t hurt him from now until 30 years old. After that it could become an issue, but that’s a long ways away obviously.
LikeLike
So you’d give him a 40 on speed as opposed to 20?
LikeLike
I’d say 30-40, but definitely not 20. I’m trying to think of someone in the big leagues I’d compare his speed to and I want to say he isn’t any slower than Ruiz is and he’s definitely faster than Burrell was in his last 2 years in Philly, which is what I’d consider a 20 probably?
LikeLike
can’t really comment much on range, although he did well going to his right on the ball down the line.
he does have a very relaxed, satchel paige kind of vibe about him on the field. doesn’t seem to rush anything. seems to kind of slouch around. don’t mean that in a negative way like he’s lazy or anything. just seems to be his style.

Was at the Clearwater game. You got the sense it was going to be wacky when Hudson got thrown out of the game on a steal attempt in the first. Couldn’t see anything, but whatever he said must have been very raw because there were no gestures or visible body language.
Cubs fans must read about Franco. They were on him all night. Milner looked quite good until he imploded in the fourth. It looked the Cubs decided to wait on his fastball and when they found it they rocked it. I thought Perkins and Seritella both looked like accomplished hitters. Smooth, polished hitters who looked they had a plan at the plate. Logan Moore had a very gritty 13 pitch AB that ended up with a walk. He showed a good eye. Cubs have terrible defense. There were so many things that don’t show up in the box: pitcher didn’t cover the plate on a WP, OF throwing to the wrong base, SS deciding to flip to 2B when he should have taken it himself that cost a DP, !B missing a foul pop, etc. On the other hand, CLW looked far better defensively. Franco’s error was on a high chop that he should have come in for, but waited back and it caught him between.
There’s no gun there, but Shreve looked like he was throwing hard. Martinez was challenged a couple times at first and showed that he is very nimble with good reactions.
It’s only one game and it is the only time I’ve seen him, but Franco looked comparatively soft physically and didn’t display an explosive arm. Clearwater has a lot of tall, lean athletic guys (Perkins, Seritella, Stumpo, Moore, Hudson, etc) and Franco is definitely on the more “well fed” side.

With Young, Utley and Rollins hitting well, there’s no place to put him regularly, but I agree he needs some starts. I’d like to see Charlie rotate him into a the lineup a bit and give Young and Utley the occasional day off. It’s a long season.

I might be in the minority here but I’d like to see Freddy playing SS every day at LV for a month or two, and see Orr on the big league club getting 3 AB per week. As the season progresses into the summer, off days for Young, Rollins, and Utley will become more important and I’d bring Freddy back up then.

I might agree in the abstract… but to do this they would have to add Orr to the 40-man roster, and they’d have to waive somebody else to make room. Players currently on option are:
Cloyd, Tyler
Martin, Ethan
Pettibone, Jonathan
Rosenberg, B.J.
De Fratus, Justin
Diekman, Jake
Robles, Mauricio
Savery, Joe
Stutes, Michael
Valle, Sebastian
Hernandez, Cesar
Collier, Zach
Gillies, Tyson
Ruf, Darin
So, who do you DFA to make room for Orr?
LikeLike
Actually, this is a cost to sending Galvis to LHV that we haven’t mentioned, which is that it burns an option year. A small cost, admittedly, but something we might need down the road if he continues to profile as a utility player.
From this list, Robles seems like the most obvious candidate, then Savery. But Savery is pitching pretty well in the early going this season. I think Rosenberg might be safe due to the fact that he provides starting pitching depth, which we desperately need.
I know I’m likely to get shouted down, but this is the reason why I said during the offseason that Tyson Gillies’ spot on the 40-man may not be completely safe. Lots of talent, obviously, but he has burned through a lot of organizational goodwill and another injury or continuation of his poor start (I see he got dropped down the lineup last night) could potentially put him in jeopardy. He’s blocked by Revere at this point and Collier profiles as a very similar player. Though Collier is sucking too.

Not that I agree with the plan, but making room on the 40 man is no issue.

They’re most likely going to need multiple spots on the 40-man before the year is out. For one thing, Adam Morgan seems like he’s pitching himself into position to be this year’s Vance Worely/JA Happ, the midseason replacement when one of the starters (Halladay?) goes on an extended DL stint. I don’t see them trusting Cloyd like that and Pettibone has been outperformed by Morgan going back to spring training.

Nobody…I actually believe there is more value for Freddy being on the big club even if he is not playing everyday. For one he makes more money and two getting limited AB’s might actually make him a better hitter.
When I watch Freddy hit it seems 9/10 times he gets himself out. He needs to learn some more patience. My 2 cents on the topic anyway!

How could getting 3 ABs per week make him a better hitter?
LikeLike
If I knew my AB’s were scarce when I did get one I would make sure I concentrated on getting a good pitch to hit. Did you happen to see his appearance last night and the first pitch he swung at?
Just my opinion but he had over 2000 PA’s in the minors. I think his problems as a hitter are not much different than Valle’s. So I don’t think more AB’s are going to fix his problem. Working counts and swinging at strikes will.
LikeLike
I did see his AB last night. That could be evidence that getting less at bats will only make him more antsy at the plate. Seeing more pitches could at least, potentially, allow him to pick up offspeed pitches better, which would prevent him from swinging at so many bad pitches.
LikeLike
Dave – I had not considered this part so thanks for pointing that out. After Ruiz returns, the obvious answer is Quintero IMO because they could use Lerud later in the year if they needed a third catcher. For now though, I’d say Robles or Savery would be fine to make this tradeoff.

Galvis should get 3 starts per week subbing for Young , Utley and Rollins . He should also replace Young in the 9th inning when they have the lead . This will get him some AB and give the other 3 one day off per week.

I agree in the middle of the season, but right now the whole team is rested and those 3 players are all far better the Galvis.

You don’t tighten the lugs on your car until after the wheel falls off… do you? Resting guys should be a season long proposition. How about putting Young or Utley at 1B for a game a week? Howard can use a lot of rest too. How about a start in LF once in a while. Galvis could be the only guy who plays every day.
LikeLike
Galvis’s bat isn’t nearly good enough to warrant 600 AB’s on a team aspriing for a playoff spot. He’s a 200 AB player in the majors right now given the makeup of the current team. I have no problem with him playing 20 games at 2nd, and 10 at SS and 3rd respectively, but that’s it for starting time. This would be a total of 200 AB’s and maybe a handful of others as a defensive replacement but not much.
If Utley leaves after this season, then he’ll get his 600 AB’s next year at 2B. There’s also an outside chance he’ll be in play for 3B should Young not renew and Asche disappoint this year.
I just don’t get all the Galvis love, he’s a utility player right now, that’s it, and one with a career ceiling of a bottom end starter, why is everyone concerned about his lack of playing time in the first 7 games of the season? He needs more seasoning and it shouldn’t happen on a major league roster. His low OBP will kill his already poor hit/power tools.
LikeLike
‘I just don’t get all the Galvis love’…..for one, because outside of Revere in CF, he is the best defensive player on the team…at three or four different positions. (Rollins and Ruiz have aged from outstanding to above-average) Freddy is plain outstanding. Secondly, when it comes to above the shoulder breath of baseball awareness…he is three Shane Victorinos wrapped up in one or an Utley clone. As for his bat, a work in progress but why deprive him of ABs here or at LHV, where he could face notch-below MLB pitching.

I love our prospects too, I’m just keeping it real regarding Freddy, and I too have debated this young man’s prowess since he was a teen (on this site and others) but his two most important baseball skills are also his weakest (hit and power to go with average speed). This isn’t a team that can afford a short stop from the deadball era playing a power corner at 3B or heaven forbid RF. Unless Rollins has a major injury or retires, Freddy isn’t skilled enough to be a starter on this team.
LikeLike
I’m with you – I love Freddy Galvis.
Reading the recent comments in the paper, the team has a serious dilemma. Freddy is one of its best 25 players, but he needs to continue his development and is currently not getting enough at bats to do so. That’s a real problem. I think if he doesn’t start getting at least 40-50 at bats per month (that’s like 10-12 a week), they may send him down just to keep him working and improving at least for a couple of months. It’s harder to get him enough work when the team needs to eek every at bat out of Utley and Rollins to maximize the team’s offensive potential. But sooner or later, hopefully, Charlie starts resting his infield regulars more and using Galvis as a defensive replacement at third in late inning situations where the team has a big lead (harder to do when Young is in the 5 hole as opposed to, say, the 7 hole).
LikeLike
IMO, Charlie, and Ruben somewhat since he listens to Charlie, juggled around with Dom Brown for a few seasons, what is stopping them from doing that to Freddy.
LikeLike
And in defense of Charlie and Ruben in this case, you’re not taking Chase out of the lineup right now for anyone, and M Young is hitting the ball well right now and has not been terrible defensively after the first two games, and Rollins is healthy and playing adequately. Combine all that with more days off in April than any other month, it’s not like Freddy should be starting right now. Which is why I made the argument above that maybe out of spring training they should have messaged to him – 1) we love you freddy, 2) you’re starting at AAA because you won’t get much PT in April, but 3) you’ll get called up in May or early June, or 4) sooner if there is an injury, and if at any point Chase or Jimmy goes on the DL, you are our everyday 2B or SS during that time, so go get ready and work hard.

+1 This is exactly what I would do.

Assuming I read your post right, given his well below average hit tool, facing below average pitching in AAA would still be a help, I agree he needs bats at the AAA level. I also don’t think calling his bat a “work-in-progress” is realistic, it’s currently like a 25/30, well below average. I know his defense is stellar, and I agree that adds value, but take him away from short stop and he’s not a major league player. PERIOD
Regarding baseball awareness, I can appreciate that skill as Utley is one of my favorite players in the league (though I am a phillies fan and have been since birth, even if I wasn’t, I’d still feel that way), but that doesn’t make a player. It’s too arbitrary, statistically speaking, unless he’s playing short, he shouldn’t get significant AB’s at the MLB level.
LikeLike
Here’s the thing: Freddy Galvis is the backup shortstop. Frandsen last played SS in 2009, and that was only 7 games. Pete Orr has played a grand total of 9 games at short his entire career. So if you send Galvis to AAA, it means that if Rollins tweaks a muscle or gets ejected or, I dunno, gets food poisoning or needs a day off, there is no one to fill in for him. So, it’s just not going to happen. And it shouldn’t happen.
The time to make this decision was in spring training. When they let Betancourt go, they essentially committed to Galvis as their backup SS and defensive specialist. I think that’s the right move, by the way. Galvis has greater value to the team as a utility man putting his glove to work than he does swinging the bat in AAA.
LikeLike
So for the rest of one game and possibly two games, the Phillies would have lesser defense at SS (but better bat) than Galvis.
Galvis would get called up and Orr would be sent down. Eventually Phillies could reverse than move and bring Orr back up and send galvis back down to get more playing time.
What I do not understand is that the Phillies have been in a few blowouts already, why has Galvis not been put in somewhere to get some time.

Yes, he is better than Chase offensively, but you can’t afford to have a “defensive player first” player at any position other than SS at the ML level. A 2B in the MLs ideally should be strong defensively and either be a run producer, i.e, Uggla, or a high OBP/AVG guy. I am not sure yet that Galvis would be either of those two offensively, although he has a better chance at the latter than the former,

RE: “Not exactly most of that draft class was slated to start their pro ball at WPT and thus those guys generally do stay in XST.”
Of the HS draftees signed in 2011: L. Greene (1s) is in XST; Quinn (2), Walding (5) and T. Greene (11) are at Lakewood; Rios (12), Shull (27) and Knight (49) are in XST. Three of the seven in A-ball, four in XST. So, is Greene “behind”? Or just “not on the fast track”? I would lean to the latter. (It was interesting to look back at just how few HS picks the Phils signed in 2011.) But it’s a little disconcerting that the highest pick in the group is in the “not on the fast track” subset, while the next three HS picks signed are ahead of him.

Saw some of Mitch Gueller’s EST start today: 4 inn, 3 runs(only 1 earned) 4 hits, 1 W, 0 K’s but a lot of ground outs. All the runs scored in the 4th when he went : S, E, GO( runners move up) 2 run single and the last run scored on a WP/PB? Later in the game Braden Shull pitched an inning and didn’t seem to have command of his pitches but did not give up any runs. In the other game Elniery Garcia started and was not very good, gave up a lot of walks, he ran over his pitch count in both his innings. Geoff Broussard came in and looked much better going 2 innings no runs. Of the hitters heading for Williamsport( or maybe late call ups to Lakewood), Pullin looks the most consistent right now. Today he hit the ball hard in his 2 AB’s that I saw, one was a line drive right at the SS(off a lefty) and the other a hard ground ball that ate up the 1B, could have been a hit or an error hard to tell, either way 2 runs scored. Z. Green FO and a 643 DP, and Cozens a K and a Foul out. Cozens looked much better during ST games against what you would expect to be better pitchers, so hope he gets himself straightened out soon. L. Greene again K’d the 2 times I saw him, but they were against lefties, for what ever that’s worth. What I thought was a bright spot was the young catcher Grullon($575k bonus) he W, doubled and K’d as the DH today.
