Box Score Recap – 4/7/2013

Hopefully for a lot of the org’s starters, in a couple months we’re saying, “Yeah, but throw away their first start and they’re having great years!” At least we saw a couple homeruns on Sunday – Rupp, Valle and Perkins, plus old man Murphy in Reading.

Here’s the affiliate Scoreboard from MiLB.

  1. I thinking old man Murphy will have a season much like old man Ruf in Reading. I’m interested in seeing how Wathan works Valle and Rupp into the lineup when there are stretches of games vs. an NL affiliate.

    1. He’s okay. He used the simile and didn’t refer to him as the next Ruf. I’m trying to create the over/under for number of combined HRs for Valle and Rupp. 40 would make sense but as Evan asked, how will they use Rupp and Valle? Will they both play most days?

      1. Weren’t there some reports about Valle shagging flies in left field during spring training?

      2. The pitcher must hit vs. an NL affiliate therefore no DH. Maybe they split a 4 game series every other day with one playing one of their off days at first. Honestly I have no clue how to get them quality AB’s especially Valle. I would set the over/under at 34

    1. Can it get any worse? Yes, it will definitely get better, amazing how the records are almost identical for all levels including major league!

  2. Rupp and C. Hernandez very pleasant starts. The plate must have seem like a saucer to Wright.

    1. As bad as 6 walks in a game is, it’s pretty impressive that Wright was able to limit the damage to two earned runs.

  3. Small sample size I know, but you can really see what RAJ has done to this organization not just at the major league level but in the minors as well. Yes there are some nice prospects who are off to some good starts and yes some of those players could play roles on the big club in the future, but the system is really lacking any blue chip star position players at this point that are less than 3 years away and anything more than 3 years away obviously has alot of risk. At the big league level, the decisions RAJ has made just look worse and worse every game I watch, particularly Howard but maybe even more importantly it are the little moves that Gillick used to make that seemed to have such a high % of success vs the moves Mr Wade made in the past and RAJ continues to make. Pat would go out and pick up a Scott Eyre and it would just turn to gold. RAJ goes out and picks up a random Chad and it goes badly. Matt Stairs vs Laynce Nix anyone?

  4. I think this is selective perception. I would point to Kratz and Frandsen and Valdes and Horst and say that RAJ is just as successful with his bargain hunting. Where I think RAJ is weaker is in the roster management that didn’t allow us to benefit from Vogelsong and Moss which could have also been terrific bargain finds. I think he has a tendency to keep internally-drafted fringe people on the 40 man that really don’t have any long-term value at the expense of keeping some of the surprise finds. I think Robles ( I realize we didn’t draft him) and Savery are two people that you will see RAJ go to excessive lengths to protect even though they are highly replaceable commodities.

    1. I don’t know that RAJ ever intended anything more for Kratz than to be a AAA cacther, adding organizational depth. It took quite a string of events for Kratz to even get a look at the big league level. And I’m not sure Valdes and Horst have accomplished enough yet to throw them in a category that under Gillick includes Werth, Eyre, Stairs, etc.

      1. Werth was a humongous sign and Stairs and Eyre were good. Gillick also brought us Jenkins, Eaton, and Garcia. Wade got us Victorino. I think most of us knew Durbin was a mistake when we signed him. I think a wish and a prayer and a cheap way of satisfying Cholly’s demand/craving for another veteran reliever. Cholly just doesn’t trust kids. The sad truth is that the PHillies are bad enough and snugged up against their budget tightly enough that they absolutely have to trust some kids. That is why Cholly just isn’t the manager we need at this point in the franchise.

    2. I don’t really think you can fault RAJ for losing Vogelsong, did you look at what he did at LV: 2-5 4.91 ERA, 1.70 Whip and 6.14 W/9. The only positive was his 11.2 K/9. I don’t remember if he was released or if he opted out but he didn’t do any better for the Angels the rest of that year. It wasn’t until 2011 that he started turning things around in the minors for the Giants.

  5. Walding has at least one hit and one BB in all four games he’s played. Tocci has also been very encouraging (his double yesterday puts him halfway toward his total from last season). It was also nice to see Ruf get his first two extra base hits of the season.

Quinn must be REALLY uncomfortable over at SS right now. Hopefully he gets into a rhythm as the season winds on.

    1. How can you be that uncomfortable when you played that position ALL last season? In his interview yesterday he states that he says, “I am not too focused on the game when I play ss.” What the heck is that. Speed may be the only thing in his favor-keeping the ball on the ground and bunting. Should really learn how to use his glove and throw by this stage of the game.

  6. A few observations of the Clearwater game, Klevin must have had the same breakfast that Milner had on Thursday because their starts were very similar. He had 3 great innings, and even got a K on the 4th inning leadoff batter, but then things went south, especially after getting ahead 0-2 then walking the next hitter. Franco gave him a chance to get out o the inning unscathed by diving for a ground ball down the line and throwing the runner out at first from his knees. But the next 3 hitters went single, double, double 3 runs scoring before he ended the inning with a K. When the next inning started single, single he was done for the day. One positive was that was that he was getting strike one on almost every batter, even when he was getting hit hard, but he was also throwing a lot more balls during his bad phase of the game which leads one to believe that he was possible losing his command for what ever reason. Well he was definitely doing something right in the first 3 innings, he just needs to find away to keep that for about 3 more innings. Offensively they actually making good contact most of the game, the balls were just going right at the fielders, of course except for Perkins’ HR which I caught on video which you can see at : http://www.youtube.com/user/TheGkita along with a few others.

    1. Thanks for the first-hand observations gkit … particularly Franco and his defense. How has Maikel looked at the plate so far? Is he hitting the ball hard?

      1. Occasionally, but he’s definitely not in a groove, let’s hope it starts soon, because he is hitting 3rd and the team needs some production there.

    2. Thanks GKIT. One thing to put in persective is what happened in that 4th inning. The lineup had seen him once through (or should that be “threw”). That’s something I’ll be looking at in his next outing. Once guys have seen you once, you have to adapt. He’ll have to mix it up. He’ll need to show them a new pitch. He’ll need to move the ball around more. It’s all about learning to pitch. Hopefully, he learned something and can make the adjustments.

      1. This time of year the pitchers usually start weakening after the 4th , they also have a pitch count . They will only get stronger, as they adjust to the league

  7. Zach Collier in the 3 hole at Reading? I guess they want him to get ABs. So far it’s not pretty. 0’fer but he does have 3 BBs. I’m sure they’re tempted to switch Hewitt and Collier in the order but Collier would start hitting and Hewitt would stop IMHO.

    1. Isn’t Collier our best hitting prospect at Reading? Who else is there?

I’ve long advocated minor league batting orders be arranged by prospect status. Get the top guys more ABs!

        1. Interesting….perhaps some merit, thinking outside the box. It definitely will get the better prospects to 1500 MilB PAs sooner, which use to be the barometer for minor league apprenticeship standards.

  8. Reading the Quinn interview, he just seems to be frustrated with his performance both offensively and defensively. As we know, that’s part of the process for prospects. We’ll see how he handles the disappointment and if he can stick with it and improve. Lakewood’s “defensive integrity” really doesn’t matter; Quinn’s development does. It’s not exactly uncommon for shortstops in A-ball to make a bunch of errors is it?

Some good news noted at the bottom of the Quinn interview: Kelly Dugan expects to be activated in a week.

    1. Horray for Dugan’s return in one week!
Sounds like it was just a tweaked oblique.
Perish the thought of a month on the shelf!
His biggest concern, by far, is his health.

(That’s some free poetry just for you, ‘Zus).

  9. So….Ed Duran with the prospect line of the year! Believe some had him pegged as a sleeper…boy would it be great it if he developed into a decent hitter as i’ve heard he plays a legitimate SS.
