Diekman’s off to a slow start, but on the bright side he threw 19 of 24 pitches for strikes last night. Pretty good unless the hitters were just chasing everything.

OTOH, Cesar H. is priming for a break out year at this point.
LikeLike
Cesar is under the radar because he didn’t ‘light it up’ when he was promoted mid season, last year. If he had been left in AA all year like Ruf, and piled up numbers, most would have an artificially higher opinion of his potential.

He had 5 XBHs in 121 AAA at-bats last year; 4 XBHs in 17 ABs this year.

Cesar will be with big club next year. Rube pretty much said that

Well if he is , it could get pretty crowded in the middle infield if Utley is back. Unless Freddy G. is used as a 5-position super utility guy.

Anyone see any of the games? First hand impressions?

Whatson was fantastic- 89-94 mph, sitting 91, curve was 77-78 and burried some for strikeouts at 81 mph. Control of both pitches was exceptional. Great body, deliver, command, and stuff. His change was 85-86 mph and not very good- they didn’t hit the ball very hard off him, but the ones they did were mostly off the change.

They should move Watson up!!

Quick question…why are people talking about Jose Mujjica? Unless my math is way off, he’s a 25 year old in High A…
Also, good to see Quinn and Walding killing it so far.
LikeLike
Walding is killing it defensively and at the plate, don’t really think you can call Quinn killing with only one ball hit out of the infield and 5 errors, actually being at the games he could of had several more. Watson is the most impressive player to take the field.

Not a parent of any players just a fan, and whats wrong with the facts, people on this board give there opinion all the time and how great Quinn is, I saw 1st hand for myself, just stating what I actually saw. If any one else was at the games and thinks other wise I’d be really curious. Just the 1st series and a long way to go.You can’t dispute the stats.

I was there, you are correct sir. But I see the ability is there, I like his lefty swing- he’s just going to need reps in that regard. At this point he can bunt for a base hit at will.

I was there to see firsthand also and I think that he’s horrible. Also if you are there live or listening to the games, please take note that if he makes 3 Errors the next day in the Stats they only report 2. Always has his Stats changed–same as least season. So when you see his Stats-double the errors and you have a more true view. Can’t field the ball and S/O looking–Gonna be a LONG year in Lakewood. Not impressed with Mora either–fielding is horrific.

Wait…are we talking about Quinn? He has struck out a grand total of 4 times?

Gilliies proved he is having trouble progressing. He was on second and first also occupied, a 3-2
On Ruf, one out he got picked off second. Probably the dumbest play I have ever seen. His head is not in the game period.

Tocci, Quinn and Walding with hits in each game so far this year. Tocci not overwhelmed so far.

Now is the time for a reliever to step up in LHV. Pitch well and it seems that you will get the call sooner than later. I can’t imagine Durbin will make it out of this month w/o being DFA’d

i was thinking the same thing. he’s been flat-out awful.

Are there any horrible relief pitchers named Chad that we’ll sign next season too or will they stop after Qualls and Durbin?

Chad Gaudin is on the Giants this year. Maybe he’ll use that park/division to establish some value and unleash himself on the Phillies next year.

Quinn states on Phoulbalz interview, has touble focusing on baseball when playing SS

Yeah, while it’s certainly not a good quote, I wouldn’t make too much of it just yet. The kid is 19 or so and is really frustrated. He is used to being the best player on the field and feels he should be better right now. Maybe they can DH him for a few days to clear his head and just have him take it slowly. I think they are going to give this experiment the proper amount of time because if he can stick at ss, he becomes insanely more valuable.

Can’t imagine DeFratus or Stutes can be worse than the Durbinator. That’s 3 games he’s now put out of reach.

wow quinn had 3 errors…. and i’m surprised he was on base 3 times and he didn’t go once.. I don’t know they circumstances so I’m not saying he should have gone just saying that’s unlike him. He’s hitting well though so far and if he keeps his OBP i could see him steal 60-80 SB honestly.

On saturday Morandini anchored him at second to let Mora try to sacrifice him over- when he could have stolen the base at will (the catcher didn’t have a good arm). In the end, Mora couldn’t get the bunt down after 2 attempts and finally his a grounder to second that Quinn advanced on. If thats a harbinger of things to come, there will be times Morandini tries to play conventionally instead of just taking advantage of Quinn’s ability to advance based on his own ability.

does anyone else find Roman Quinn’s quote a little concerning… he said that he is not always focused on the game and that he should be fielding better at this point.. why would he admit to that?
LikeLike
My guess is probably a mixture of a few things. 1)-He’s 19/20 years old and probably not media trained enough to say quips such as “well, I’ve had some troubles but I’ve been working hard daily and it just has yet to translate in games”. 2)-I guess he probably has his head filled with so many tips that he’s probably more focused on doing things that have yet to happen then let the game come to him so to speak.
I wouldn’t read TOO much into it, though its concerning, but to me it just sounds like a player at a position he’s still learning.

Positional changes are rough on players. He likely has a bunch of things going on in his head it is difficult to concentrate on hitting and fielding. Without thinking about positional overlaps in the system, just remember that moving to CF shouldn’t take long and he will be very good out there, and his prospect value really does not plummet as long as the bat doesn’t fall apart with the defense.
LikeLike
It concerns me. Despite nearly 30 errors last year, he never seemed disinterested or lacking focus. A lot of his problems were fundamental things that you would expect to go wrong for someone learning to play the position at a professional level. I’m not so much concerned about the number of errors he has, but more so in what’s causing the errors. Is he completely missing first on throws? Is he flashing a glove made by Bethlehem Steel? Is it bad footwork? Is it rushing?
I give him credit for being honest though. To me, it’s refreshing. He clearly knows what the problem is, so now he can better prepare himself to fix it.

Not focused at all and it definitely showed these past few games. Can’t hit, field. He is horrible. Makes 3-4 errors every game. Very disappointing

Can’t hit??? Are you crazy? he’s 6-18 this year with 3 SB, last year hit .281 with an OBP close to .400 and had 30 steals in what, 260 at bats? stop looking like a clown.

Matt, try to use a date-specific link. The link you used is the current day link. the link for today (apr 7) is http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?sid=milb&org=143&ymd=20130407

when he said he’s not focused why do you guys jump to the conclusion that him not being focused is because all of the tips and his positional change? It could mean a number of things, don’t baby him.

You can use the “Select Date” feature at the top of the boxscores to go back a day. I like the way this is set up can you can easily go back a few games & see the trends.

Worse comes to worse teach Quinn how to play all three outfield positions. I really like Tocci in CF so Quinn can definitly handle a cornor. And Cozens can play the other one.
LikeLike
I’m not at all sure that Quinn can be a truly impact player as a corner OF. HIs offense profiles much better at SS or CF and those positions make better use of his speed and athleticism.

very true he would lose A LOT of value at a corner outfield spot.

This is a little bit off topic but what does Tocci’s power look like? could he hit 30 doubles? 20 HRs? 6’2 160, looks like he needs to get in the weight room.
LikeLike
Like what I see from Tocci so far–have to remember he won’t even turn 18 until August-he’s a babe and I’m sure he will grow and mature. Don’t think he has the power to hit 20 HR’s lol
LikeLike
Tocci is very difficult to project, if he ever develops 20 HR power, he could very well end up a perennial all star… This was a topic brad covered a while back (I think), but to paraphrase, it went something like this:
If you read the prospect profiles you’ll see the following:
Hit For Average: 50/60
Hit For Power: 20/40
Fielding: 55/70
Throwing Arm: 60/65
Speed: 70
The most difficult one of those to project as you can see based on the spread is “Hit for Power”. The reason is the kid is 17, and while we can all say with certainty “He’ll never win the triple crown”, he doesn’t have to. If he is a 40 on the power scale, given those other attributes, he’ll be a premier player in this league.
Now, he’s young, a lot could go wrong between now and the majors, further adding to his “risk” profile. But, he’s 17 and playing A ball, he was the 6th ranked prospect in the GCL last year at 16, there’s a lot to be excited about. Given his skills, his downside is Ben Revere, his upside… quite a bit more.

That was Matt – but your point stands. Enough HR to keep pitchers honest and a whole mess of XBH and he’s got real star potential.
