Box Score Recap – 4/5/2013

I think we’re all going to enjoy this year of Jesse Biddle. And a really fine start for Perci Garner – 1 H and 7K over 6IP.  He’s repeating the level, but still…quite good. And a good effort from Josh Warner for Lakewood. Only Pettibone threw down a clunker from the hill.

Here’s one – Tommy Joseph has 4 passed balls in 2 games. What are we supposed to make of that? The excitement of living in the Lehigh Valley has overtaken him, I suppose.

    1. Not sure, but I guarantee its fewer than the number of wins the guy he was traded for has provided the big club in three seasons.

      It’s 16.5, by the way.

  1. Joseph’s defense at catcher is based upon his arm and quick release in throwing to 2B. Watching him last year, it was clear that he needs improvement in blocking pitches. He is not as agile behind the plate as Valle, who is better defensively in general, but has a slower release so can’t gun down runners as well. Hopefully it is just a matter of more defensive practice for the still quite young Joseph, rather than an inherent lack of mobility.

    1. the worry with Joseph is that he is large for a catcher, and it is generally thought that the larger the catcher the harder time they have with balls in the dirt. This isn’t universal but it is an old bit of baseball thought

      1. i don’t remember joseph having problems with PB at reading. wondering why this issue has cropped up now?

  2. Walding with another hit and BB, and Quinn goes 2-5 with two SB. Hewitt smacks two doubles and draws a walk — he’s going to tease us again, isn’t he?

Strong day all around for the starters, with the exception of Pettibone, who is suffering along with his teammates from “PP talked up how awesome this LHB team is going to be so of course they are crapping the bed”-itis. Biddle in particular is looking more and more to me to be most likely to fulfill his promise as a fixture in the big club rotation for years to come.

    1. The same thing happens every year, once the pitchers learn that they can’t sneak a fastball by Hewitt and they start throwing him curves, he will be dead to rights. Don’t even look at Hewitt’s statistics until the end of May, at that time, he will almost certainly have revealed himself to be the flawed player he has always been. Hopefully, he has saved money to go back to school or pursue another line of work.

      1. I don’t have any faith that Hewitt will have a good year, even with his day today, but I’m not sure he’s ever gotten to the end of May with good numbers.

        1. Just to play the devil’s advocate for a moment, aren’t most of the pitchers Hewitt is facing this year the same as the ones he was facing last year in Single A, except for some attrition among the lower-quality ones, getting left back or released? It doesn’t seem like it’ll take a trip around the league for the book on him to get out.

          1. No, not always, players don’t move up in lock step, older players remain, different organizations are involved in the EL than the FSL (I believe). He’s experienced this pattern before. We see him thrive early season and prematurely declare that “he’s figured it out” – but he hasn’t. He can hit a fastball but not a breaking ball. If he’s magically learned something, we all will be thrilled because he’s a very good athlete, but my expectations are extremely low. I doubt he’ll be in the organization by this time next year.

  3. OK night for the “prospects”. Biddle with a positive early season game is a good sogn. Quinn, Walding and Tocci with multiple times on-base. Garner with a huge game. Josh Warner with a good game. Pettibone and Joseph were the only “prospects” with bad games. Not bad.

    1. Huge game from Biddle. April has not been kind to him the past few seasons. Biddle has the potential to be out biggest mover in prospect polls. I think the fringe Top 100 days for him are a thing of the past

      1. I was prepared for something awful, just because he has been such a slow starter. That’s about as positive of a development as I’d hope to see.

    1. This new hampshire team seems very prone to the k. Rosin having his way the first couple innings.

  5. Tough to see a tough outing from Erbe. I am cheering for him to make a comeback. Besides him, nice outings from Reading and Clearwater bullpens.

  6. Biddle: he recognized–along w the coaches–that better prep for the season was needed. Sure, it’s ONE game, but in past seasons he didn’t get into rhythm until May-June. For some unknown reason I predicted another 2 MPH on his FB in ’13 and a big jump in his ratings to within the first 20 prospects.

The PB rate for Joseph is scary. He WILL be putting in a lot of time on that during this season. He is and should be aware of the big opportunity in front of him with Ruiz questionable for re-signing. On that subject, could the horrendous pitching so far be partially a result of Ruiz’ game-calling being missed?!

    1. Art D., i was wondering about that. I’m sort of hoping that’s the case, and we’ll see a real improvement when Ruiz comes back.

  7. Hewitt through 2.8 games: 3 singles, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 walk and zero Strike outs.

  8. Quite a pitcher’s duel so far in the Lakewood game…

Are the hitters giving rubber bats a try?

  9. Good win by the BlueClaws. Watson was real good. And Walding, Tocci, good day at the plates. And Quinn! Three games, three stolen base attempts, and three stolen bases! Keep it up guys!
