  1. Sucks to see Giles hurt. And now I’m officially way less impressed with Keivi Rojas. Phillies must think his success last year was a fluke that he didn’t even get a spot on either Clearwater or Lakewood. Only way he becomes worthwhile to see now is if they held him back to stretch him out into a starter.

    1. This was my first thought. I went to Baseball-Reference.com right away. No one named Mojica has played for the Phils since 2005. There is a Jimmy Mojica who is 29, plays the infield and was in the Independent Leagues for the past few years. There’s also a 24 year old who played in A+ for the Yanks last year named Jose. Take your pick..

      1. It’s apparently Jose Mojica. Trenton Thunder beat writer Josh Norris tweeted on Wednesday that the Yanks had traded Mojica to the Phillies, no indication of for what.

      2. Believe it or not…but Troy Hanzawa is bigger then Jose Mojica. I guess good things come in small packages.

  2. I am amazed at how little I know about the roster, because I follow the farm system closely. My guesstimate is that Clearwater is not going to be an elite team this year.
Very few names stand out to me as comers.

    1. Keep an eye out on Franco, Perkins, Altherr and Serritella…..should be the meat of their lineup.

  3. Yeah, we definitely need an update on Giles ASAP. Let’s hope it’s nothing seriously arm related. You always have to worry about relatively modestly sized guys who throw 100.

I won’t be surprised if they’re aggressive with promoting Quinn at midseason if he does ok. They seen like they’ve been more than willing to push Morgan, Joseph, Tocci, etc.

  4. The starters are Garner, Klevan, Stewart, Milner and Hernandez, I suppose. Two or three of those guys, will probably be pushed to relief by the end of the year. Plenty of room for Brady to move up, if he pitches well.

    1. Any chance O’Sullivan starts? I sort of thought he was moved to the bullpen at least partially to save his arm since he hadn’t pitched a lot recently. I read his fastball can touch the mid 90s- If he can do that as a starter, I’d think he might get a look.

      1. It would make sense, if the Phillies tried him at starter, to see what they have. At this point, they probably have more to gain with O’Sullivan, than Hernandez.

      1. In the paper today, RAJ acknowledged that LGJ was held back because he came to camp overweight and that they’re trying to get him into game shape. The thought being that he’ll go to LWood when he’s in shape. As for CWater

        1. Dugan is here when he’s healthy. A for CWater, its not that bad a team. Seritella and Perkins should both hit and we have to hope for Franco to hit and the rotation should be decent. Several of those arms have a chance to become major league pitchers although probably as relievers.

            1. I think this means Dugan, Villalobos, Alvarez, Carver, and Giles are all on the DL. What hapopened to Broussard and Rojas? Hurt or EST?

              Like

            2. As I mentioned a few days ago, I saw Villalobos limping around with a knee brace on, he didn’t look good. I couldn’t tell if it was post-op or just resting it hoping that surgery was not needed.

        2. Well, if that’s true, then he’s done it two years in a row. The first year it’s easy to forgive and forget. You would think, however, by the second year, he would have learned his lesson and wanted to work hard to please the team. This doesn’t speak highly to his motivation or commitment.

          1. I have family that comes from the same part of Georgia that LGj lives. The cuisine in that part of the country doesn’t lend itself to losing weight. LGj and his family are going to need to hire a dietician, to teach him how to eat properly.
He has probably been eating fattening foods for the 1st 20 years of his life, someone probably has to teach him what to eat.

            Like

            1. I know, and maybe the Phillies could have done more to encourage him to stay in shape and eat properly. They have made a very big investment in him.

            2. Or maybe after he realized he was a 1st round pick in a professional sport, he would maybe get his a$$ in gear and get into better shape. I have not been impressed with him thus far, but I guess only time will tell.

And to think we took Greene over Bradley, sigh.

            3. Give LG some time and he may turn into a good player. Bradley had a great spring but how long before MLB pitching finds his weaknesses?

            4. In the game I saw, he seemed befuddled by Cliff Lee’s curve ball. Other than that, he looked outstanding, but some great athletes have gone by the wayside in big league baseball due to “trouble with the curve”

  5. A lot of bonus money from 2010-12, playing in the Extended Spring intrasquad games. Larry Greene jr, Mitch Gueller, Kevin Walter, Jonathan Musser, Lino Martinez, Franklyn Vargas. The entire Clearwater roster plus the guys on the DL can’t match those guys.

    Like

    1. I wonder why they are left behind in Extended Spring Training if they are so good, maybe a little further development.Bonus money doesn’t make a good player .

      Like

      1. I don’t begrudge anyone a big bonus, so I’m not sure if that came across. But you are right, a big bonus doesn’t make a good player. The bonus does say that someone believed they were good talents.

        Like

      2. Walter, Musser, and Martinez have had a history of injury and may be ailing or being actively protected from the cold April whether in Lakewood. Greene was overweight. Did the bonus make him lazy? Gueller wasn’t good last year in extreme SSS and is apparently very raw strong arm, so perhaps more instruction, before exposing him to full-season ball. No idea on Vargas. Likely they plan to send him to Williamsport.

        Like

        1. That is a good point on Kevin Walter. Protecting him from the cold weather makes a lot of sense, with his injury history and lack of innings on his arm.

          Like

    2. Not really surprising in most of those cases. Lino and Musser struggled at their levels last year. Vargas and Gueller would have been surprises to open in full season ball I think. No idea what’s up with Walter. Greene is definitely disappointing but hopefully it’s not too long before he’s in Lakewood.

  6. This is a pretty bad team. Let’s hope that we have a few diamonds lurking beneath the drek. Serritella, Perkins, Garner, and Hudson are at least intriguing. O’Sullivan has a very good arm – he has good velocity and movement. I would think that when he gets healthy, Dugan will find his way back here. Any updates on Giles would be appreciated. I hope it’s not an arm injury.

    1. Of course, I missed Franco in my haste. He’s definitely worth following – a top 5 guy in the origanization and perhaps the second highest ceiling of all position players in the system (after Quinn).

      Like

        1. Agreed – he’s really not on my radar any longer. It’s hard to believe that, about a year ago, he and Asche were pretty much in the same boat. How quickly things change.

          Like

    2. I don’t think it’s that bad. I’m not sure what to make of the pitching since about 7 of those guys could possibly be in the rotation. Not a lot of high picks or top talent in the system but most positions will be worth following when the team is healthy.

  7. Also, “Roof” appears to be Jonathan Roof, who BA says the Tigers traded to the Phils at some point in the last couple of days. MiLB.com lists him as an outfielder, but Baseball-Reference says he was mostly a shortstop before they used him as a corner outfielder at AAA last year. I’m hoping that means “versatility” and not “failed infielder going back to the drawing board”.

  8. How does a young kid come in out of shape, that is a big red flag for me. just shows he is either really immature or a kid who just doesnt care,

      1. It is confirmed (and by confirmed his wife’s twitter account talks about their baby boy and has a picture).

Not that it is an excuse as this is his job, but it is important to remember these guys are human and some things can derail the best plans.

        Like

        1. True, but he also reported out of shape last ST. So he is 2 for 2 as a Phillies farmhand in that particular red flag department. He was a guy whom we suspected, like HOward, would always need to work on controlling his weight, so even with a new child, this seems legit cause for concern. The Lakewood game reps he is missing cannot be made up.

          1. I feel like people are missing something here, he was also drafted when he was out of shape. They drafted him when he was 6′ 235 lbs or whatever. Even with some muscle on the body you shouldn’t be over 210 at that height.

            Like

            1. what i meant to say instead of typing my email address. was dan uggla is shorter than that and is around 220 . so maybe he can still be 225 and effective . and also look at cespedes he is shorter and heavier than 210

        2. We keep saying its because he is out of shape but has anyone from the FO made an official or even not so official statement saying that is the reason he was held back?

          1. yes. Amaro said he was held back in extended spring training to get into shape for the season in the notes of some Inquirer or Daily News article yesterday

      2. Bah, I have a full time job, two kids, one of which is a baby, and am doing grad school. I dont get paid to do it, but i stay in great shape. We all have excuses, but having a kid in the off season is a poor reason to neglect your job. Hopefully the vets in camp pulled him aside and gave him an ear full.

        1. The PHillies will not draft a guy in first or supplemental round if they don’t believe he will sign for slot. There approach in recent years with the primo picks has consistently been ‘best player available who will sign for slot’. That has caused a lot of the problems the pharm is having.

          Like

          1. The only problem the “pharm” has been having is trading away the most talented people in it year after year.

            Like

            1. Certainly lost some very good talent in Singleton, Santana, D’Arnauld. When you trade your top talent, you have to replace it or watch your organization dwindle. The old system allowed the PHillies to spend all they wanted to on the international market and many teams busted slot on the draft. The Phillies chose not to spend to replenish the pharm. That was a conscious decision and a bad one. We also have never signed one of the Cuban or Asian guys who can step right into the bigs.

              Like

            2. In defense of that, Santana, Singleton, and D’Arnaud (maybe Gose as it might’ve meant keeping Worley/May) are the only ones that are going to come back and haunt this team.

            3. Granted. Who in our lower minors is closer to a given? Quinn had equivalent chance. Beyond that….

            4. FWIW, Baseball America has a higher grade on eight(8) different, current Phillies’ prospects, than the grade they gave Santana this year. If Santana was still in the Phillies’ system he would be no higher than the 9th rated Phillies prospect.

              Like

            5. To answer your question: Quinn and Franco are higher rated prospects than Domingo Santana. Tocci, Watson, Walding and LGJ were the same level as Santana coming into Spring Training.

              Like

            6. I wonder what the scouting reports are on Santana. Swing too long? Based off his age and performance you’d think he’d be more highly rated.

              Like

            7. @Handzus, about Santana, from BA: “…he hits well to the opposite field for his age.”
“… scouts are split on whether he has the aptitude to learn to pull the ball… he has holes in his swing… and some scouts wonder about his hands and timing, grading him as a fringy hitter.

          2. If you are going to hold it against them for using that strategy when drafting LGj over Jackie Bradley, in 2011, then you have to give them credit when the strategy works. In 2010, they did the same thing when they took Jesse Biddle over Anthony Renaudo and Stetson Allie. (Allie isn’t even in the Pirates’ top 30, just 3 years later)
You have to look at all of the decisions, not just the negative examples, that support your theories.

        2. Injured college kid with plate discipline does not fit the profile of what the current regime drafts. The only way we get plate discipline is if it happens to be on a raw but toolsy highschooler.

        3. Far too much love for Bradley at this early stage of his career. LGJ is a high schooler. JBJ is a college kid. No way you can make an informed decision about who was the better pick for another three or four years at least.

  11. Franco worth following. Perkins and Serritella might develop into interesting players. After that a lot of guys with skills who are badly in need of a breakout season — Altherr, Hudson, Garner, Hernandez, Shreve, Stewart. This is a very weak team. Reading/CLW now definitely the weak links on the pharm.

    Like

    1. Reading is weaker than anticipated due to Morgan and Joseph forcing quicker than anticipated promotions to AAA. Clearwater on the other hand… you have #8 Franco, #25 Altherr, #30 Hudson and #31 Ethan Stewart. Not much there.
