Phils Sign Dave Bush to Minor League Deal

The Phillies have signed veteran RHP Dave Bush to a minor league contract, and he is expected to report to AAA Lehigh Valley tomorrow. Bush, 31, a local product from Conestoga High School pitched for Texas earlier this year and was 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 17 games (3 starts) for the Rangers. AFter his release from Texas, Bush was pitching for the Cubs AAA affiliate and went 1-1 with a 6.14 ERA in 5 starts. Bush opted out of his minor league deal with Chicago on Friday. Originally a 2nd round pick of the BlueJays in the 2002 draft out of Wake Forest, Bush has spent over 5 years in the majors, compiling a 56-69 career record with a 4.70 ERA, spending the bulk of his career with Milwaukee.

  1. Makes sense. The team was probably concerned LHV’s record was so excellent that Sandberg would get picked off by another organization in the off-season. Bringing in the guy with the 6 ERA in AAA should help bring their record down to earth a bit.

    1. I think they just saw a local guy & wanted to give him an opportunity. Bush has been to the show for a few seasons, but will probably be a career minor league guy from here on out. Sandberg will get looks from other teams regardless. He’s a prime candidate for a MLB manager spot. The Cubs kinda screwed him over when they went with Mike Quade. Sandberg will probably get to choose from a few offers where he wants to manage.

      1. I remember watching him get crushed in the leg by a rocket from Jim Thome. He threw hard then. If he can still bring that kind of heat and learn better command, he may be a good reliever. He has good swing and miss stuff. Beat the phils in the playoffs in 08.

  2. I don’t mind the signing. There isn’t a glut of pitchers at LHV so why not throw a minor league deal (almost no money) at a former major leaguer to at least see if he has anything and if nothing else he pitches some innings that weren’t already spoken for.

  3. With the big league Phillies 13.5 games up on a playoff spot the Ironpigs’ playoff push is possibly the most interesting story in the organization this month. Don’t mind seeing them get some help, especially a local guy.

  4. Waste of time and $$$. Throwing money out the window is a better way to spend your cash th,an signing this stiff.

    1. your an idiot. He throws hard and beat the phillies in 08 as a starter in the playoffs. Also, he’s from the area and grew up a phils fan. Harry Kalas went in depth about it during the Series with the Brewers. If he can figure some command issues out, he could be an awesome reliever.

  5. On the topic of Bush being a local product. Has anyone else noticed how little talent Pennsylvania produces anymore? Neil Walker, Chris Heisey, maybe Kyle Blanks are the only players from the whole state worth a crap right now.

  6. I actually like this signing quite a bit, and he actually is/was a better pitcher than some of you may think. Depending on how he does at Lehigh, I wouldn’t be surprised or upset if he was called upon to make a spot start or 2 for the Phillies in September. Considering it’s only a Minor League deal, this is another pretty nice insurence move by Amaro.

  7. Figure that LVIP have only 11 pitchers at this time and with the adding of Cust and the demotion of Rivero, seems to be a glut of Outfielders. Have that as 5 and Barfield would make 6. Figure the lack of CF capability of most, makes Barfield and Thompson as remainers they should keep Domonic Brown in LF and Brandon Moss in RF. Demotion of Rivero kind of means they keep Overbeck at 1B, so Cust will DH in DH games and in other games he goes to 1B, I reckon. Only 4 IF with Galvis, Frandsen, and Orr (also augmented by Barfield) And the 2 Catchers. plus 12 pitchers. Figure this could portend the bouncing of Delwyn Young.
