It will be interesting what happens after the trade dead line and if certain players get moved up. I can see Morgan, who had a good start last night, and Nesseth get the call to Lakewood. HMart, who hit his 1st pro homerun last night, should also get a chance there as Steve Singleton is hitting 083 in his first few games. I have a feeling you will see some starting pitchers get shut down in August to save their arms, Biddle and Manzanillo are candidates. I can also see that one of the Clearwater arms gets traded and Buchanan would get moved up to fill the spot. Reading has some good candidates to move up like Galvis, Rizzotti, Mitchell, and Susdorf but not sure how many would go up. Lehigh Valley has that magic going this year.
Agree on Rizz and Sus, but I’d like to see Galvis finish the season at Reading. What a nice year he’s having offensively though. Significant improvement over last season is all we can hope for a player who’s repeating a level. No doubt he re-enters my Top 10 this offseason.
Anyone have velocity reports on Hyatt from this season? The peripherals don’t jump off the page, but the guy consistently misses bats. Would have to think he has a legitimate shot as a bullpen piece in the next year or two
I’m starting to develop a man-crush on H-Mart. It’s embarassing, but I could no longer hold back my true feelings.
Cheers to Cesar who continues to erase is horrid start to the season. Keep flying under the radar CH. Some of us haven’t forgotten about you
I’m wondering if maybe Cloyd and Friend will get a shot in LHV before the end of the year as well. Kinda sick of seeing Brummett get bombed almost every outing, and Cloyd has had a solid year. Friend should probably be up in LHV already as he’s been dominant as Reading’s closer since getting called up from Clearwater.
Cant really see Mitchell and Susdorf getting promoted unless its due to injury. Thompson and Moss have been solid all year, while Young has struggled, but I cant see the Pigs getting rid of him this late in the year for AA callups.
Was up and out of my seat when I saw that play last night. First time I had ever been to FirstEnergy to see a game. Like what I saw from Austin Hyatt, very similar to what I saw when I covered him in Williamsport two years ago. Misses a lot of bats. Fastball was 88-90 the whole time, didn’t see it vary much at all. Looked like he was throwing a slider and maybe a change-up. I don’t feel right commenting on other players since I haven’t seen them all season, but definitely liked what I saw from Hyatt. Parent came out to the mound to talk to him with one out in the sixth and I believe runners on first and second. Thought for sure he was going to get pulled. Parent let him in and on the first pitch he threw a 5-4-3 double play and that was the last pitch. Just overall impressed. I thought the kid was really good in Williamsport, but seeing him against this better kind of competition reaffirms my belief he’s a legit prospect.
at first I thought it was a double play where he missed 2nd before throwing to first. the reply helped me realize the sick play to get the ball to the SS and nice throw to first! thanks for posting link.
mathieson has no secondary stuff ,from what i saw last night, dont care how hard you throw without a good secondary pitch they will hit you, i am off that bandwagon, 27 and never develop a good secondary pitch.
Fair enough, but how did strike out 8 in 4 innings?
He is inconsistent tp be sure, but I have seen him throw good breaking stuff this year. I think one day we are going to look up and find he is making it in the big leagues. The talent is still there.
Great to see two lefties in Morgado and Morgan doing well- can’t wait to see them & H. Martinez in Lakewood. If we develop some infield talent and LHPs besides Biddle, our system would be truly elite.
catch maybe your right, i have only seen him maybe 7 or eight times, never saw a good off speed pitch that he could throw for strikes ,most likely i caught him on his bad days, eight strikeouts, how many were called strikes> i dont know, how many were against career minor leaguers who cant hit to save there life, sorry only can go by what i see,
Pretty nice win last night for the Cutters on another hot night out in Connecticut.
Pitching highlights: Morgan, as good as he’s been all season. 87-89 on the fastball with a good breaking ball/change to keep people honest. He made a major web gem to finish his outing in the fifth by reaching out and knocking down a comebacker with his bare hand, scrambling over to pick it up, and firing from his knees to first to get the runner by a step. I asked him after the game if the hand was okay, and he said it’d be fine.
Morgado was highly impressive as well. First time I’ve seen him pitch four innings. Gotta love the control and the K’s. He was sitting around 90 for most of his fastballs, and was showing a nice changeup which was coming in around 79-80. Got into a jam in his last inning, as the Tigers had men on second and third with two outs, but Asche made a slick play on a slow roller behind the mound, bare-handing it like a third baseman on a bunt gunning out the runner out to end the game.
Hitting:
Franco with two double again…first was a hot-shot roller down the third-base line, second was a deep fly to left-center. He finished 3 for 4 and leads the team in RBI’s by eight over Altherr.
Really good to see Harold Martinez go yard…he didn’t clear the wall out there by a ton, but he got enough of it to get it over. I talked to him this morning about the difference in bats and he emphasized how he really truly prefers wooden bats to the ones they handed out at the collegiate level last season. He thinks he has more power with wood than with the new metal bats, so I thought that was sort-of interesting.
The low-light of the game was sloppy baserunning by the Cutters. In one inning Hudson stole second, but then tried to steal third with nobody out got nailed by the catcher Leyland. Hudson also got picked off at first base in a separate incident, as did Altherr.
Hey guys, long time reader decided to actually post on here. I just wanted some of your opinions on Chris Duffy. I know he is way too old for playing in the Golf Coast League and there must of been something the brass saw that he didn’t start in at least Williamsport, but I really like the guy. He’s 24 and really should be in Clearwater or Reading being such a good college hitter.
The fact that he isn’t murdering the GCL, in his 2nd pro season, after playing 4 years of college ball, is an indication that he won’t be a big leaguer.
Just a guess but perhaps he was rehabbing an injury earlier in the season? I have to admit that I saw him as a possible double-jump candidate following his solid debut in the GCL last year.
Not sure what game you were watching. Mathieson had 8 ks. Lots of good offspeed for bad swings.
People should remember he has had 3 arm surgeries so lets give him a bit more time. He still needs more command but the splitter impressed me last night.
I hope they do not give up on Mathieson or let him go somewhere else. I would love to see him compete for fifth starter role next year. He is not as far off as people think. If you are looking for the next Ryan Vogelsong, well, here he is.
I agree, no reason to give up on him and he could make an interesting candidate for the 5th starter job. Especially considering we can take a risk on that spot with how good the others are…
Anyone catch the BA hot sheet on Friday. Both, Rodriguez and Biddle made the list. They had a knock on Rodriguez’s stuff, their reports say he mostly throws in the high 80’s, but has a very deceptive delivery. So, the Rodriguez velocity questions continue.
Clearwater – big day today. Jiwan James with three doubles; he is getting traction in a big way. Valle with a hit and another walk. Trevor May strikes out 11 in 6 innings. I am now at the point where I really do not want to see him traded.
One chatter point. Wily Mo Pena was released today. If he can catch on with the Phils, perhaps we can avoid trading too many prospects. Pena can hit – check out his minor league stats this year. The D-backs just lost patience.
This sounds like kind of a bummer regarding Singleton (from today’s Inquirer):
“But after struggling defensively in left field, the 21-year old has been moved back to first base. ‘He’s a first baseman,’ LaMar said.”
I thought the Phillies had said that he was moved to first because his bat was lagging and he was going to get tried in the OF again. But LaMar and the article makes it sound like that’s not the case. Maybe that’s just what the official line since they don’t want him to think about left field right now? We can hope.
If Singleton gets two more full years in the minors–AA/AAA—then 2014 he competes with a 33 year-old Ryan Howard. And JS is 22 at that point. Phillies do not rush prospects, prefering more seasoning AND delaying service time for fiscal reasoning. So JS may be a 2014 June call-up, if he progresses as expected.
The problem with that would be that Howard is signed for at least two seasons after that. At which point Singleton may be more valuable as a trade chip. But from everything I heard before, he wasn’t a lost cause in left field. Even if he ends up a little below average defensively, he would make up it if his bat develops like it could.
He will be more than Beltran easily, probably about the same as Pence, it is that Tampa is asking not that much compared to what the previous price had been (Top 2 prospect, first born child, and anything else you can part with).
The problem with Upton is that he can be a petulant child and he is not who you want in the line-up if you are looking for a hit. That being said he is a slight notch ahead of Pence in my book because he has untapped potential vs Pence being a hardworking overachiever (who has to return to being an above average regular and not an All-Star soon).
Upton is in his Age 26 season…he’s hardly a young untapped talent at this point. He’s had nearly 6 full seasons to show what he’s capable of. You seriously insult Pence by saying he’s just a hardworking overachiever compared to Upton when Pence is by far the better player at this point and throughout their respective careers. Pence is also under team control for 2 full years after this one, not 1 like Upton. He will, and should, cost more on the trade market.
Disagree. He’s one year removed from failure in hi-A. There is no rush right now. Let him have a full year of success. It’s not as if he doesn’t have control issues to refine. I see all the starters sticking in Clearwater this year.
One year from failure? How is that any basis for a point at all? Failure might be a lil too strong of a word. He walked a lot of guys. That’s it. Hitters hit .212 and he struck out 90 in 70 innings. That was also 175 innings ago.
Can the Phils find a spot in AA for Daren Ruf? He is batting .312 10 hrs and 60 rbi now…he deserves it. They should replace him with Murphy who shouldn’t be in Lakewood.
If he keeps going, James will end up making the first 7-8 of our prospect lineup for 2011’s season.
Haven’t seen him play bur I’ve heard here and elsewhere that he plays a good CF. True?
A good switch hitter with speed at the top of the lineup who also plays a superior CF…is a big star for our big club’s scouts and coaches. He’s got two seasons to fill out his resume to add a little more power…but he already is a fine gap hitter leaving him at 2nd or 3rd base for his efforts.
Gillies cannot seriously be considered any prospect for the big club at this point. A shame to be betrayed by his legs.
Defense is James’ best tool as well as having a cannon for an arm. Should be interesting if all these doubles start to become HR’s like they did for Brown.
Having James, Gillies, Collier, Hudson, Quinn (?) as CF candidates is the essence of making the numbers work for you. Would like to see them continue to add MI talent to create the same situation. 1 or 2 mor signs there in order, IMO.
Breaking News- Valle got a walk!

Not exactly a dominant performance by Inch. Was hoping to see a little more from him.

I suspect the Phils’s brass are off that bandwagon as well.

Fair enough, but how did strike out 8 in 4 innings?
He is inconsistent tp be sure, but I have seen him throw good breaking stuff this year. I think one day we are going to look up and find he is making it in the big leagues. The talent is still there.

He’s not a prospect anymore.

Do any of you think he could be a big leaguer?
LikeLike

Except he is a lot younger than Vogelsong and throws harder.

Also they got his age wrong since he’s 19, not 21. Just a slight difference there.

LikeLike
The problem with that would be that Howard is signed for at least two seasons after that. At which point Singleton may be more valuable as a trade chip. But from everything I heard before, he wasn’t a lost cause in left field. Even if he ends up a little below average defensively, he would make up it if his bat develops like it could.

I do not think Singleton plays a game in a Phillies major league uniform.
Here’s my guess – he ends up in Tampa as part of an Upton package.

I’d like to see that. Upton, with a change of scenery, could be a 30/30 guy for us for years.
His numbers away from the Trop are great.
… Just imagine him in the same outfield as Shane Victorino.

I dont see it happening but I’d like to see them get him. He’s got a lot of potential in our lineup and ballpark

Olney says Tampa is not asking for much to move Upton. He could be had for much less than Pence or Beltran.
LikeLike
He will be more than Beltran easily, probably about the same as Pence, it is that Tampa is asking not that much compared to what the previous price had been (Top 2 prospect, first born child, and anything else you can part with).
The problem with Upton is that he can be a petulant child and he is not who you want in the line-up if you are looking for a hit. That being said he is a slight notch ahead of Pence in my book because he has untapped potential vs Pence being a hardworking overachiever (who has to return to being an above average regular and not an All-Star soon).
LikeLike
Upton is in his Age 26 season…he’s hardly a young untapped talent at this point. He’s had nearly 6 full seasons to show what he’s capable of. You seriously insult Pence by saying he’s just a hardworking overachiever compared to Upton when Pence is by far the better player at this point and throughout their respective careers. Pence is also under team control for 2 full years after this one, not 1 like Upton. He will, and should, cost more on the trade market.

Nice to see Valle with a walk today! A couple of hits also.
I really think that Trevor May needs to pitch in AA at some point this year.
LikeLike
