Has been very consistent both at the plate and behind the plate. Should be the Phils 3rd catcher call up come September.

Dane Sardinha, 32, .097/.200/.129 in 62 AB’S; 0 HR and 0 RBI; 10%bb/32% k rates; .000 vs. LH; .125 vs. RH, Thrown Out 5/19 (26%); Caught 19 games with one error (.994); 4 passed balls.  Has been as close to an automatic out as you can be for Lehigh Valley and amazingly does not have an RBI in 70 plate appearances.

Reading

Tuffy Gosewisch, 27, .270/.316/.425 in 233 AB’s; 9 HR 48 RBI; 4/9 SB; 6% bb/15% k rate; .328 vs. LH, .249 vs. RH, .310 with RISP; .245 in July; Thrown Out 29/83 (35%); Caught 71 games with 3 errors (.995); 4 passed balls. Has provided all you can ask for offensively from a catcher and is outstanding defensively.  Should be in Lehigh Valley.

Tim Kennelly, 24, .189/.238/.320 in 122 AB’s; 2 HR 15 RBI; 5%bb/24% k rates; .147 vs. LH, .205 vs. RH, .171 with RISP; Thrown out 8/25 (32%); Caught 28 games with 5 errors (.971); 4 passed balls. Has also played 9 games in the OF without an error.  Kennelly is simply having a lousy year.

John Suomi, 30, .241/.297/.410 in 83 AB’s spanning 3 teams in the organization; 3 HR and 7 RBI; Thrown Out 5/34 (15%); 23 games caught with 2 errors (.989). Goes up and down the organization and fills in wherever an injury replacement is needed.

Clearwater

The only area to complain about is his bb rate. Other than that he has been outstanding.

Torre Langley, 23, .206/.276/.250 in 68 AB’s; 0 HR and 12 RBI; Thrown Out 8/32 (25%); Caught 25 games without an error; 4 passed balls.

Thrown Out 27/85 (32%); 68 games caught with 7 errors (.968); 7 passed balls. Phils 3rd round pick in 2010. Jeff Lanning, 24, .229/.289/414 in 70 AB’s; 3 HR 8 RBI; 7%bb/25% k rates; Thrown Out 8/33 (24%); Caught 21 games with 3 errors (.983); 2 passed balls.

Williamsport

Bob Stumpo, 24, .317/.419/.508 in 63 AB’s; 1 HR and 9 RBI; 11%bb/9% k rate; Thrown out 4 of 23 (17%); Has caught 19 games with 1 error (.966); 5 passed balls.  33rd round pick of Phils in 2010. Stumpo is very old for this league and can not survive long-term with a CS % such as his.

Francisco Diaz, 21, .188/.339/.208 in 48 AB’s; 0HR 2 RBI; 3 SB; 17%bb/11% k rates; Thrown out 13/37 (35%); 6 errors in 16 games caught (.959); 1 passed ball. Both his offense and defense have been lackluster but his arm has compensated to some extent.

  1. Kratz has put up good numbers at LHV this year. With Schneider’s contract up after this season, I wonder if Kratz will be the backup next year. That would also give Tuffy an opportunity to show what he’s got at AAA, assuming he comes back.

      1. I think Kratz has a very good shot to be the Backup Next Year.
He could be a very nice and inexpensive option for 1-2 years until Valle/Rupp are ready to be the Backups and start working their way into regular playing time.

If they can perhaps find an aging Vet who wants to hang around for a year at a low salary that is an option too but I don’t see Sard back next year and Kratz should be able to fill that role just as well and save money.

    1. Kratz was pretty bad last year getting a shot in Pittsburgh. I could see him doing better, He’s 31 years old so past his prime, and his AAA production is equal to last season’s. He might get a shot if someone else gets hurt, but a team won’t make him their primary backup.

Sardinha meanwhile should not be maligned by such a small sample. He’s at LEAST a .180 hitter!

      1. C’mon. 34 AB in 9 games. SSS for Kratz if ever there was one. His coffee didn’t even get cold. If the Phils don’t like Kratz in the role of Major League backup that’s fine, but I think he’s capable of filling that role both defensively and offensively if given the opportunity somewhere. BTW, look at the splits for LHV pitchers when Kratz is catching vs. anyone else. He was the new guy in s/t this year–perhaps better feeling for the “aces” when/if he comes back next year.

  2. This reads like the report on why Riley Moore or some of the other HS catchers drafted must be signed.

  3. In order for Kratz to come up when rosters expand on Sept 1st, they will need to find a spot on the 40 man. Who comes off?

  4. I wonder if he is actually hurt, or his defense is so supect that they don’t even want to put him in GCL games yet. He played a little last year. I got pretty excited by the Spring Training reports. What’s the deal?

  5. With all the Phils have (non financially) to offer a veteran player who wants a ring, I’m sure they will find a more capable backup for cheap than Kratz.

  6. I really pushed the Cameron Rupp bandwagon back during the Top 30 debates and, consequently, felt like a giant moron during the first 2 months of the season. Its been great to see him put it together offensively lately.

    1. That is the fun in it. I liked Colvin over Cosart and argued for Hyatt for number 6. There is much wisdom on the site. That is why we enjoy it.
