Good game by Pointer with his second hr on the year and Harold Martinez going 3-4.
Biddle seems to be doing really well in his past few starts especially it seems like he is racking up the strikeouts at a solid rate. Any word on his velocity?
Just got back from the Reading game (sadly it was in the cesspool known as Trenton). Cloyd pitched really well, giving up only 3 hits I believe going into the 6th, then fell apart. Rivero made a real bad error at 3rd, backing away from a ball instead of charging it. There was no gun reading at the park which sucks, but oh well. Kissock did so-so in relief, his pitches were all over, leading to a few walks. Friend came in at the end and gave up a triple, but they were able to get that runner out at home the next batter to save a run. Nice night for a ballgame though, Trenton isn’t a favorite stadium of mine, but it is what it is.
At least I got a Andy Pettitte bobblehead to I can target practice in my yard.
I saw the game, wouldn’t say Cloyd fell apart. Really bad error by Rivero should have been a double play. Cloyd could have probably gotten out of the inning easily after those first 5 innings of work after that. Umps zone seemed to shrink in size during the 6th also with the 2nd walk. Still Cloyd’s BB/K rate 4/44 with Reading and 11/83 on the season. I had headphones in listening to the broadcast and he even mentioned the zone seemed to be getting smaller on him. No excuses though, seems he pitches to contact and also great at painting the corners. I’m a fan of this guy, really was a fine outting, just the error and couple hits in the 6th really.

Biddle pick smacked of “hometown boy signs cheaply” but that was not the case.
Can i get a seat on the Mitchell bandwagon please. The last two months have been impressive.
It was just a small setback for Cloyd. One bad inning after five very good innings. His status should not be hurt by it. Biddle is creating some excitement with his performances. I was hoping Franco would force the system to move up third basemen, but he cooled off. Barnes had two doubles tonight. I thought he would be in Reading by season’s end. He needs to hit with more power for that position. Reading’s park can help.
Frandsen has jumped Galvis. Shoenberger looks like he will be the Thresher’s SS. Hanzawa has not been helpful in the field nor at the plate.
The top of our system is beginning to look like we will have real prospects at that level, something we have not seen much of.
The opening in the system created by the broken leg of Larish has caused a system wide move up of 3rd basemen with Frandsen returning to LVIP. Since he is around 28 and has already played in MLB, don’t see that as jumping Galvis. Fidel Hernandez moved up to Reading, so Barnes (and C. Hernadez ) was passed over. Schoenberger was moved up from Lakewood to take Fidel Hernandez’s spot, and will likely continue to back -up Hanzawa. Schoenberger did not excel on offense at Lakewood, and Hanzawa seems to be well regarded by organization.
In Spring Training, he received the “outstanding participant” award or something like that, for the player who conveyed the best attitude in Spring Training, and he continues to get playing time despite less than stellar offensive contributions.
Seems to me back early in the offseason, advocated advancing Hanzawa to Reading to be a reserve to Galvis , Harold Garcia, etc.or whoever was there this season. People said he hadn’t proved anything at Clearwater yet. So, he’s still proving it , it seems.
Nice games for Villalobos, Pointer, and Valenzuela in the GCL. The pitchers…
Good games in NYPL from Hudson, Martinez the hitter and Martinez the pitcher.
Great start for Biddle!
No Singleton tonight? But Valle walks.
Good game for Galvis and alright start for Cloyd. Nice to see Overbeck triple.
Greenvilles Gun is notoriously fast. I remember reading that it registered may at 100 a couple years back, Even if its 4 mph fast, 93 mph out of him is better than what others had seen before. Great Job.
The Reading game told us some things Friday night for those of us who were there . Carlos Rivero struggled defensively at third base in a crucial situation. A late swinging Trenton lefty hit a tailor made potential double play ground ball right at him that went between his legs for an error and set up the three run Thunder sixth inning. This play changed the whole complexion of the game . On the other hand Tuffy Gosewisch figures play at the final level some day. He threw out a runner at second and then at the plate drove in Mitchell from second by leveling off on a high fastball for a line drive base to right to give Reading an early 1-0 lead . Mitch had walked earlier in the inning to extend his on base streak to 15 straight games. And finally Tyler Cloyd is for real. He was forced to fight off a poor ball and strike ump.who struggled to find a consistent strike zone. But the ump did look good styling when he did call a first or second strike. Cloyd was still able to maintain his composure with all this drama and battled the Yankee farmhands to gain his fifth quality start in his last six starts..
Real excited about Biddle. He has definately been the top pitcher in the system in the last month. I’m also glad he seems to be throwing harder. Harold Martinez has his average over .280. I’m calling it now. He will be a candidate for a double jump next yr to Clearwater.
Yeah, that’s a possibility as the next guy up the line (Mattair) if he still keeps playing would not gain much from another trip to Clearwater, and Barnes would go to Reading if he continues, and not many minor league veterans would go to A(A) , and Franco could man Lakewood, then. Looks plausible.
Biddle must’ve been going through a dead arm period a while back. Good to see the velo reading back in the 90s even if it is slighly inflated by the gun.
Starting to get excited about Biddle. Last night marked 6 straight and 8 out of 9 where we was anywhere between solid and outstanding. You have to wonder how many innings the Phils will let him throw this year. I suspect they already have a number in mind. Perhaps 130-140 or so.
Harold Martinez having a nice start to his professional career. Hopefully he can curb those strikeout number over the next few months
Would love to see Ruf bumped up a rung. Even Barnes. We have career minor leaguers getting significant at-bats at Reading when guys in the system are having success while age inappropriate at lower levels. 1B in particular is a bit of a head-scratcher. Rizzotti hasn’t been as spectacular as he was last season, but he’s certainly ready for the next level. Darin Ruf has corrected his lopsided K:BB ratio while repeating Clearwater. He can easily slide into Rizzotti’s spot at Reading. Jim Murphy has been productive during both stints at Lakewood and will be 26 in September.
Slowly but surely, Overbeck is recovering. I am most interested in seeing if he can get his average back to the .265-.280 range. We know the ridiculous power is there (and will come in AAA) – the question is whether he can make contact frequently enough.
Myers I dunno. Paco Figueroa is Reading filler. He plays when the real talent is hurt or whenever. You don’t want a real prospect in that spot because he might hit a week where he is not needed.
Myers and Barnes would be a good replacement, I agree. Myers has had very limited AB’s, with his excellent defensive skills or with his speed alone he should be in AA.
That whole move up all the 1B thing, Looks like Larish’s broken leg has caused a realignment, and they chose to move up Third Basemen instead. And at LVIP they have the guy people called to have moved up before, Cody Overbeck backed by Bozied who can fill the sometimes DH position. Don’t look like they use Overbeck in OF, because he wouldn’t be moved to CF, and Moss (hitting well with power) and Delwyn Young are September 1 call up possibilities. So, it could be, barring something unforseen, that the organizational 1B alignment remains until season’s end.
Valle has played for the last couple of year’s for his hometown team, the Los Mochis Caneneros (something like that) in the Mexican Pacific League. Same applies, I think he will keep doing that anyway.

I am very surprised that Harold Martinez’s batting lines have not generated more discussion on the site. Every category is to the extreme, one way or the other, except batting average. I am not sure I have ever seen a player walk and strike out a combined 52% of his PA’s, while having a 450 babip. His ab’s really only have 3 outcomes. He strikes out, he makes contact and gets a single or he takes a walk.
Eliminate Cosart, Biddle, Singleton, Valle and say May. Do we still have enough to land a solid right handed bat or back end relief pitcher? Or a better question, with those names off the board are we still a deeper farm then the other teams wanting the same positions? If Law has us ranked 5th then even if we mark some of our guys untouchable we should still be deeper then the other organizations.
Not enough I would think—Cosart, May or Colvin–one will have to be included to get what you suggested. Other teams know the talent and skill level of their opponents’ farm systems. Interestingly I have not heard mention of Julio Rodriguez’ name in any of the trade scenarios.
While your comment does not clarify the return, I have not seen any names (bell, cuddyer, willingham) that would require one of our top 5 prospects.
I’m not sure how the org sees May, I still see him as a reliever given his the constant comments about his inconsistent deliver and resulting command problems, so I could see him being available in the right deal. But Cosart is not going anywhere, unless it’s for young, controllable talent in return, and the same for Colvin, Singleton, and Valle.
PSU(Nittany)Joe—–tweet him and lets solve this mystery once and for all. He is a nice guy and will reply in kind to courteous requests.
@TysonGillies21
Because he has been mediocre and inconsistent this year. I’m not writing him off, but I’m also not relying on him to become a significant player. He’s still on the radar, although he is lower on that screen.
I think it is looking nearly imminent that the Phillies will trade for a relief pitcher (which is a little weird and probably entirely unnecessary). The question is who will and should be on the trade block for such a move? That, of course, is a loaded question because it depends who they are getting. Let’s start with the assumption it’s Mike Adams who, for clear reasons, might be the best choice (as effective as Bell, not as expensive as Bell, controlled until 2013 so could provide a bridge if Madson leaves).
I’m thinking that type of reliever would cost you one of the AAA guys (Aumont? Overbeck?) and one or two of the guys in the lower minors (Rodriguez? Pettibone?).
They are not giving up one of their top prospects for Mike Adams or even for Heath Bell for that matter (particularly since Bell is a rental, even though he could net you a compensation pick).
They’re going to have to. San Diego isn’t going to do the Phillies any favors and these are the two of the best bullpen arms in the game.
Overbeck and Julio Rodriguez aren’t going to land you anything in a deal. It’s going to take a top 3 pitcher, a relief prospect (DeFratus, Aumont, Schwimmer) and another top 15 prospect to get a deal done.
And as good as Stutes is, I’d feel more comfortable with him as a 6th/7th inning guy, which is what I think his role is going to be in the organization… basically Chad Durbin but leaps and bounds better.
Also, there’s a good chance Contreras doesn’t pitch for the rest of this year. He needs to be replaced by another Veteran Reliever.
Madson/Adams or Bell/Bastardo/Stutes/Lidge/Kendrick/Perez looks a lot better than:
Madson/Bastardo/Stutes/Lidge/Baez/Kendrick/Perez
Maybe you could even throw Schwimmer or DeFratus in the mix also for a bullpen role in the post season if they aren’t traded.
Basically… ask yourself this question (I just thought of this after I hit post.) Say this is 2010 and the Phillies never went on a run and were sellers at the deadline, looking to unload salary and restock the farm. What would you want back in a trade for Ryan Madson? Because, that’s what it would take to get Adams.
If the front office gives up three top 15 prospects for a middle reliever or a guy (Bell) who will be a FA in two months, they should all be institutionalized. Not saying that isn’t San Diego’s asking price, just that it would be bonkers for the Phillies to pay it.
More realistically, they’ll look to get the best reliever possible for whichever of the Clearwater three (Cosart, Colvin, May) they think won’t cut it as a starter.
Which is probably May.
Schwimmer or DeFratus would probably need to be in a deal. I’d trade Schwimmer. No offense to him but I think DeFratus has more upside. I assume San Diego would push for DeFratus though, which is why I put him in there.
Then you have to give them some type of position player. Maybe a Leonardo Castro or someone expendable. (And before anyone says it, no, they don’t want Matt Rizzoti)
Ramon Oviedo threw a nice 7 inning “no-no” in the GCL today though he did plunk three and walk one. Always like averaging one strike out per inning pitched.
For those that asked, Gillies is hurt again with a foot injury. Reports were that it was minor and there was relief that it had nothing to do with the hamstring, but, judging by the amount of time Gillies has missed, the foot injury is major.
Pleased to see Biddle beginning to support those of us who regarded him as one of our best #1 draft choices in years. Keeping his groove through most of this season should make his 2012 year in Clwtr a certainty. We see that the FO seems to be in favor of moving him pretty quickly up the ladder for possible delivery to MLB in 2014…so long as he has no concerted stumbles along the way.
The other good news that I really like is that Harold Martinez is doing well…with better hitting and a significant OBA. His scouting reports previous to 2010 indicate power to be found (his physical makeup verifies this) there along with a college year when he hit 20 plus big flies. Scouts said that they hoped he’d get a good hitting coach when he became drafted…to gain more of his power/hitting potential. Hope that is what’s happening.
He is supposedly a superior fielder at 3rd…and with his “I can’t wait to get started” early signing, his attitude and work ethic seem on track and he could become a front office and coaches’ favorite.
Maybe, just maybe, since he spent some years playing college ball, his ladder to the bigs may be just 2-3 years.
Since Polanco is there at 3rd for now and next season (if his back holds out), Harold’s ETA would still be a season late even if things work out well for him. But he, for me in his acknowledged short pro career, represents their very likely 3rd baseman 2013 or 2014. Just could be one of their best draft choices recently.
Love the young bullpen arms the Phillies have, but if you can package them for a proven reliever like Adams at his price $2.5 and one year of arb left so be it. Question on process: I assume the big club would offer Madson arbitration if they can’t reach a deal?
They will undoubtedly offer though. Madson will be a Type-A and we;ll receive compensation if he signs elsewhere, but only if we offer arbitration and he declines (which he certainly will)
Good game by Pointer with his second hr on the year and Harold Martinez going 3-4.
Biddle seems to be doing really well in his past few starts especially it seems like he is racking up the strikeouts at a solid rate. Any word on his velocity?

Nice story on Biddle….says he hit 97 mph in the 7th inning but the gun is a few ticks fast. Either way, that’s good news on his velocity.

LikeLike

I think I’d like to see Terry Evans and Paco Figueroa gone and D’Arby Myers and Jeremy Barnes replace them at Reading.

LikeLike
LikeLike
Basically… ask yourself this question (I just thought of this after I hit post.) Say this is 2010 and the Phillies never went on a run and were sellers at the deadline, looking to unload salary and restock the farm. What would you want back in a trade for Ryan Madson? Because, that’s what it would take to get Adams.
LikeLike
If the front office gives up three top 15 prospects for a middle reliever or a guy (Bell) who will be a FA in two months, they should all be institutionalized. Not saying that isn’t San Diego’s asking price, just that it would be bonkers for the Phillies to pay it.
More realistically, they’ll look to get the best reliever possible for whichever of the Clearwater three (Cosart, Colvin, May) they think won’t cut it as a starter.
LikeLike
Which is probably May.
Schwimmer or DeFratus would probably need to be in a deal. I’d trade Schwimmer. No offense to him but I think DeFratus has more upside. I assume San Diego would push for DeFratus though, which is why I put him in there.
Then you have to give them some type of position player. Maybe a Leonardo Castro or someone expendable. (And before anyone says it, no, they don’t want Matt Rizzoti)

What is the ceiling for Schwimmer and Defratus?

The can offer him arbitration but since it isn’t one of his “arbitration years” he can simply decline the offer and go to another team.
