    1. Brown has been on fire for his last 11 games:

      .368 AVG/.455 OBP/.955 OPS in 44 PA.

His fielding has been rough as expected but you can see him really starting to put it together.

    2. Juan Perez does it again! His stuff is legitimate, but I think, historically, he has had some serious command issues. He reminds me a little of J.C. Romero circa 2007-08. I think he will stick and, in so doing, close a huge hole in the bullpen.

Meanwhile, how about Trevor May – a seven inning one-hitter with 9 Ks. Wow! I think people underestimate him a bit. He could easily become the best of the Baby Aces.

      1. His command is terrible but he does have good stuff.

Hopefully he has a good couple months as a LOOGY.

    SS – Jonathan Villar (Corpus Christi/AA) – (.196) 0 for 4
    OF – Anthony Gose (New Hampshire/AA) – (.261) 1 for 4 with a 2B (11), run, BB, SB (41) and a K
    OF – Michael Taylor (Sacramento/AAA) – (.263) – 0 for 2 with an RBI (31 and a BB
    OF – Matt Spencer (Tennessee/AA) – (.276) 0 for 2 with an 2 RBI (51)
    C – Travis D’Arnaud (New Hampshire/AA) – (.308) 1 for 4 with a 2b (21), RBI (32), run and a K

      1. Just as impressed with his 9 HRs. His approach is still evolving, but to couple even average power with his other tools makes him a very dynamic prospect.

  3. Yikes, my asked me about Kyle Drabek tonight and I looked him up and he’s s-t-r-u-g-g-l-i-n-g. 7+ ERA in his 4 starts back at AAA.

    1. I think I read that he’s had some trouble maintaining his composure, head stuff. We always knew he had some maturity issues… Travis D’Arnaud looks like the guy that’s really going to come back to haunt us from that particular trade. Though, given Doc’s performance, he can haunt away as far as I’m concerned.

  4. Did the DSL guys decide to have a track meet??
Glad to see hits, walks and no Ks for Harold Martinez tonight. Not sure how Nesseth got through 6 innings without striking anybody out.
Looks like Cloyd had a good start.

    1. Nesseth did what he’s supposed to do last night, and that is pile up the ground balls like crazy. He pitched pretty dang well in my opinion, working around an unearned run thanks to another error by the Cutters infield.

It must be some kind of running theme throughout the organization, because the Cutters have been stranding RISP like crazy recently.

Harold Martinez had a nice game – good to see the XBH and also a SB. His RBI double was a shot down the right field line.

I still don’t know really how it happened, but Morgado faced 6 batters in the top of the eighth without allowing a run…it felt like he threw 55 pitches in the inning, but he came back out for the ninth and was lights out.

Tough luck outing for Hector Neris, who has been one of the real bright stars in the pen this year. He’s also one of the nicest kids you could ask to meet…but he’ll get more chances as RHP Ryan Duke was called up to Lakewood today.

  5. Tyler Cloyd with some good numbers 6-2 3.13 ERA and a freakish K/BB78/9 in 83 innings. Ethan Stewart looking good in GCL. Is Aumont hurt? Just saw he hasn’t pitched in July. Schwimer once again was solid. Zeid should never start again as he is on fire out of the pen.

Maybe someone helped him get just a little more control. He was the poster boy for effective wild.

      1. Theoretically it can be done in less pitches. If a pitcher were to enter a game with the batter sitting on a one strike count, he could do it in eight.

  7. I got bored and thought I would occasionally take a look at the top prospects in the NL East outside of Philly. Hope the mods don’t mind me cluttering up the thread, but it’s the weekend, right?.

I basically charted each team’s top 10 prospects listed in the pre-season by BA, although if they are in the majors I didn’t add them (Freeman, Venters, ect…). If there are names I need to add for the future, let me know. If there is a number next to his name, it means he was listed as a top 50 prospect by BA this week.

If this was a bad idea, let me know (Note: I thought it put our lists in perspective to see how other top 10’s were faring)

  8. I like the idea. After a cursory glance, I can’t say that the other NL East teams are doing better than we are. It seems like they have a few guys underperforming and I’d take our system. I think we almost drafted that Yelich. He wasn’t available, so we took Biddle. I don’t think we have anybody to compare with Harper, but it seems like Galvis is better than Lipka and Dominguez, although the latter is at triple A. Cesar Hernandez, who I think is a second baseman, seems to compare favorably with the injured Havens. Of course, I know that prospects’ numbers can often hide the potential they have.

  9. Lots of Phillies questions on the BA chat this week

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/prospect-hot-sheet/2011/2612050.html

Jonny (Long Beach): What are your thoughts so far on Jonathan Singleton’s year? Seems like a very good season for someone his age, but everyone keeps talking about his struggles? He’ll be a 20-year-old in AA next year and that seems to put him on a pretty special track as a hitting prospect.

J.J. Cooper: It’s not a great year, but it’s not awful either. Singleton’s bat has to carry him, so you’d like to see him with a slugging percentage above .400 whether he’s in the Florida State League or not. But the swing’s still there, the plate discipline is still there and he’s the second youngest player in the league. I still like him a lot, but that infatuation has cooled down a little from last year at this time.

Kyle (Philadelphia): Did Trevor May receive any consideration for the midseason top 50? He seems to have settled in and should be heading to Double A soon.

J.J. Cooper: Sorting out the Phillies’ four pitching prospects at high Class A is tough to do. Depending on the scout you talk to, you can get a completely opposite order of which of the four they like the best. May has plus stuff, but there are a lot of scouts who think his command has a long ways to go and he may end up as a power reliever, that’s why he just missed the Top 50.

David (Bethlehem, PA): Any truth to the internet chatter that Jesse Biddle has lost the heat on his fastball (from 93-95 to 87-89)?

J.J. Cooper: Yes. Sitting more in the high 80s from what I’ve heard.

Mark (Myrtle Beach): He’s 21 and in Low-A so the obvious question is this: is Lisalberto Bonilla someone I should take seriously?

J.J. Cooper: With this kind of stuff, he’s definitely someone to keep an eye on.

David (Bethlehem, PA): For a big guy who throws hard, why can’t Brody Colvin miss bats?

J.J. Cooper: I don’t have a good answer for that one. Wish I knew. Scouts still love his stuff.

Jerry (San Diego): What about disclosing the 5 names that just missed the list? What do you make of Christain Friedrich, CO, P

J.J. Cooper: We didn’t sit down and rank ’em out to 55, but Segura, Will Middlebrooks, Tim Wheeler and that crop of Phillies Clearwater pitchers were next on my list.

He puts up some of the best content on this site…

    1. ketch,
I certainly like the idea as I do not follow prospects from other organizations (unless they are ex-Phils). I would recommend it being a once a month (or when you have time of course). And it will be better to promote to it’s own thread.

Maybe other commentors follow other organizations (or local minor league team for out of towners) and could add some insight to that thread.

As always, great job and keep posting.

  12. Bill Conlin thinks we should acquire Hunter Pence. I don’t like his trade proposals though.

Here’s what I would do. Ed needs down-the-road pitching. Offer him a choice of any three of the five so-called Baby Aces at Clearwater: Jared Cosart,Brady Colvin, Julio Rodriguez,Trevor May and Jonathan Pettibone. Or take any two and you can have first baseman Jonathan Singleton, who will be about 25 years old by the time Ryan Howard’s contract runs out.

    1. Three pitchers from Clearwater for Pence?

Heck no, IMO. I’m down for a deal if it’s the right deal, but Pence isn’t a difference maker IMO. He’s a really nice player playing in a no-pressure situation and he does a lot of things pretty well. He’s definitely an outgrade, but he’s not worth multiple A-list prospects.

      Plus, Houston is freaking desperate.

Give me a few. I’m negotiating with Richard Justice right now on a good deal.

    2. Crazy thought but instead of buying high for their franchise face in Pence…why not go for Bourn instead. The price tag will be lower and he’ll fit our lineup much better as he improves us significantly on defense AND gives us a true leadoff guy who just happens to bat RH. If we had Bourn, we could shift Vic back to RF and move Brown over to LF. That’s a very good defensive outfield with the best defensive CF in the NL in Bourn and yet another legitimate gold glover in Vic pushed back to RF where he was incredible defensively.

      Like

      1. Agree that Bourn is a better option – so tired of the silly Pence speculation; he would cost a king’s ransom (if available at all) & wouldn’t be worth it. Could easily turn into one of the worst trades in team history.

But why don’t people focus on the guy who would (a) be a bigger upgrade than Pence, yet (b) much, much cheaper (in terms of prospects). Beltran, of course. Sure he’s a rental only. But it’s not as if Pence is going to be a big bargain next year.

        Like

        1. Dont get me wrong, Bourn would cost us but not as much as Pence. Also Bourn is controlled only through 2012. Also, Boras is his agent so it’d only be a 1.5 year rental. He’s only making $4.4 million this year and he’s arb-eligible next year though so financially its far easier to do than Pence.

Also, if Rollins doesn’t return, we have a natural leadoff hitter.

Also, he’s repeating A+ so my excitement is a bit tempered. Its a shame that Colvin didn’t come into the season with good conditioning. Its been a struggle for him as a result. Hopefully he learns from that mistake and recommits himself in 2012.

  16. Question for the masses: Has anyone gotten any velocity readings on Savery now that he’s a part-time reliever in AA? His effectiveness seems way up from where he used to be as a starter last year in AAA. Is he simply overwhelming younger guys? Has his stuff ticked up in short relief? Love to know what’s up with him.

    Like

    1. Agreed. It’s as though he were a completely different player. I wonder how much of this is just his stuff playing up better our of the bullpen and how much of it is his giving his arm, perhaps, a better chance to rest an dheal. He is on the verge of becoming a real prospect again.
