Around the System–Relief Pitchers, Lower Half

Lakewood-Lendy Castillo, 22, 6 games (1 start), 0-1 with a 3.09 ERA; 11.2 IP 11H 3BB 17K; 1.25 GO/AO; .244 opp. avg., 1.20 WHIP; 13.1K/9.  Still very early in the season for Castillo, who has looked very good so far.

Mario Hollands, 22, 6-4 with a 4.10 ERA; 18 games (12 starts); 74.2IP 88H 23BB 58K; 1.48 WHIP; 1.05 GO/AO; .294 opp. avg., 2.8BB/9; 7.0K/9; .287 vs. LH, .298 vs. RH, .281 with RISP; 6 games as a reliever, 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 12.1 innings. After a solid start of the year as a starter, Holland went thru a deep slump and now has come out of it as a reliever.  Since he began relief work, has looked very good.

Chase Johnson, 23, 22 games, 4-4 with a 4.01 ERA; 42.2IP 40H 11BB 44K; 1.19 WHIP; 0.60 GO/AO; .245 opp. avg., .323 vs. LH, .198 vs. RH, .260 with RISP; 2.3BB/9; 9.3K/9; 5.58 ERA since May 1. A very strong start to the season, and then two plus months of inconsistency for Johnson, a 21st round pick in 2009 for the Phils.

Jay Johnson, 21, 19 games, 0-1 with a 2.59 ERA; 24.1IP 13H 19BB 28K; 1.73 GO/AO, .160 opp. avg., 1.31 WHIP; 7.0BB/9; 10.4K/9; .207 vs. LH, .135 vs. RH, .167 with RISP. Johnson has been nearly unhittable but suffers from significant control issues.  A live arm who is worth continuing to take a long look at.

Tyler Knigge, 22, 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in 26 games; 3 saves; 33.2IP 31H 16BB 32K; 1.39 WHIP; 4.3BB/9; 8.5k/9; 0.82 GO/AO; .242 opp. avg., .188 vs. LH, .275 vs. RH, .268 with RISP; 1-2 with a 4.37 ERA since May 1.  Has shown glimpses but a notch above mediocre so far, for the Phils 12th round pick in 2010.

Colby Shreve, 23, 3-4 with a 3.71 ERA; 22 games (3 starts); 51IP 55H 24BB 38K; 1.54 WHIP; 1.52 GO/AO; .276 opp. avg., .253 vs. LH, .292 vs. RH, .173 with RISP; 4.2BB/9; 6.7K/9; 2-2 with a 3.18 ERA since May 1.  Got off to an awful start this year, probably partially because of the disappointment of starting in Lakewood again. Has settled in to pitch fairly well.

Juan Sosa, 21, 3-2 with a 4.38 ERA, 9 saves in 29 games; 39IP 35H 14BB 30K; 5 HR allowed; 1.25 WHIP; 3.2BB/9; 6.9K/9; 1.79 GO/AO; .248 opp. avg., .291 vs LH, .221 vs RH, .306 with RISP; 2-2 with a 4.74 ERA since May 1.  The hone run ball has hurt Sosa, who has shown glimpses of real promise.

Williamsport

Juary Gomez, 21, 6 games; 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA; 13.1IP 11H 2BB 13K; 0.97 WHIP; 1 save; .216 opp. avg., Very nice early on.

Cody Fick, 23, 4 games (1 start); 1-1 with a 6.39 ERA; 12.2IP 14H 6BB 4K; 1.57 WHIP; .286 opp. avg. Rough.

Gabrial Arias, 21, 7 games, 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA; 3 saves; 12.1IP 9H 1BB 10K; .209 opp. avg., 0.81 WHIP.  Extremely impressive first three weeks.

Hector Neris, 22, 6 games, 0-0 with a 0.82 ERA; 11IP 9H 3BB 12K; .212 opp. avg., Had pitched in 10 games for Lakewood going 1-1 with a 5.50 ERA.

Austin Brough, 23, 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA with 1 save; 6IP 7H 1BB 5K.

Ryan Duke, 22, 5 games, 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA: 6.1IP 3H 0BB 7K. Very impressive so far.

Percy Garner, 22, Last years second round pick came off the DL to throw in one game in relief, then left injured and went back on the DL>

Bryan Morgado, 22, 8 games between Lakewood and WIlliamsport; 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA; 12.2IP 11H 8BB 8K; 1.50 WHIP; .214 opp. avg. Morgado has struggled both with his control and to stay healthy.  Last years 4th round pick has the talent to put it all together if he can keep his health.

Colton Murray, 21, 0-0 with a 7.36ERA; 3.2IP 7H 2BB 2K.

GCL

Carlos Best, 20, 4 games, 1-1 with a 7.04 ERA; 7.2IP 9H 2BB 6K.

James Birmingham, 22, 4 games, 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA: 3 saves; 6IP 1H 2BB 10K; DOminating early on at this level.

Fabian Cota, 19, 4 games, 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA; 7IP 7H 2BB 5K.

Paul Cusick, 22, 4 games, 2-1 with a 3.60 ERA; 10IP 9H 4BB 10K.

Rye Davis, 22, 3 games, 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA; 5.1IP 1H 3BB 5K.

    1. Certainly plenty of depth at the very top of the system. Its tough to know what you have at the lower levels as it isnt infrequent for starters at lower levels to become relievers along they way (See DeFratus, Bastardo, Aumont, Carpenter, Mathieson).

  1. Rios played SS today in the GCL..I guess the brass want to see him first play the field before making him a pitcher.

  2. Jay Johnson is a great story. Nice to see him do well so far. Like having another college draft pick but he is actually at Lakewood instead of Williamsport.
Shreve is org filler for now. But he has a couple more years before he is a minor league free agent so he might still have a chance to move up through the system.
Garner (also Eldemire and Gillies) is losing lots of development time with injuries.

  3. Really can’t get excited about any relieve pitcher in the lower minors since the better prospects begin their careers as starters and eventually transition to the pen as the move up.
