    1. I’ve been noticing Cloyd of late. Nice K/BB ratio at AA. He’s old though so I have my doubts about his upside.

        1. Cloyd is eligible for rule 5 draft, so , if he does well enough, hopefully somebody snatches him up.

  1. Did I miss an injury? Collier hasn’t played since 6/30. He’s not on the DL though. Day-to-day thing?

Mario Hollands and Lisalberto Bonilla have both flourished in their switch of roles. Hollands hasn’t given up a run in 5 outings of relief. Over 11 innings he’s struck out 10. Bonilla, who was lights out as a reliever, has stepped into the starting role and looked very good.

Someone recently declared Hudson dead on arrival but take a look at Dugan’s numbers. They are worse. Hudson is actually 3 months younger than Dugan. So far Dugan is rising up on my list of disappointments this year. It’s early yet but I expected him to start at Lakewood and he didn’t. They’re at 15 games so let’s check back at 30.

  2. Yeah, Colier did not play again. Alan Schoenberger in LF, so injury might be suspected.
LKW- interesting line-up Schoenberger LF, Alvarez, CF, Hewitt RF, Santana DH, Geancarlo Mendez at 1B. Would be OK with that line-up till end of season, maybe they can promote some others.
Hewitt with 9th HR as opposed to 11 for all of last season. 3 for 5 with HR zero STrikeouts, once again, giving untrueness to previous appraisals from some. Looks like the promise of HR hitter, something doubt that Collier will offer. Both of these can play CF, Hewitt is faster , but neither will be regular in CF, so which do you prefer, corner OF with above average power or little power. Steals about the same. So Hewitt falls under category – prospect, despite the dismissal of those whose self perceived expertise, derives from the reciting of the results of somebody else’s formula of “would-a should-a could-a ” stats.
WPT- seems to me lately that Maikel Franco has begun to play 3B regularly while the highly touted College draftee, Harold Martinez has been DH’ing regularly. Things to come?
Hector Neris- pitching well as power reliever.
RDG- Looks like Savery back as relief pitcher. Maybe this changes and he hits a bit more when they return to DH games, but don’t see that any of the 1B/Corner OF at RDG are of the can’t miss must play variety. Looks like they change the plan a bit. What do you think of someone who changes the plan every 5 minutes.

      1. I agree. Franco can hit and fields exceptionally with good range and arm. He should be at Lakewood. If Mattair moves to Clearwater, Barnes may be moved to Reading and Rivero to LHV as the Phillies show they are contemplating a successor to Polanco next year. He is wearing down as Moyer and Ibanez have done before our eyes. They seem not to see Larish as their third baseman of the future.

    1. In Sunday’s Inquirer, Chuck LaMar said of Franco: “He’s a good defender at third base… There were a lot of internal talks about pushing him to Lakewood at the start of the season, but we didn’t want to put him in over his head because he’s a bit of a free swinger. He is one of our best minor league hitting prospects.”

Sounds like the team is quite high on him.

  3. I think of Dugan and Altherr as similar players now. Neither has an elite skill, while I would guess Altherr has more speed and Dugan more power potential. Though both have been tried at other positions of more value, it appears they will remain in the OF. Unless Dugan realizes some of his power he will become a bench minor leaguer. Altherr’s speed will keep him higher on the prospect radar as he will likely be able to stay in CF.
Along with Hudson, all are still young but year 3 still in NYP is a disappointment for them becoming Top10 prospects. I expected Dugan to be the most advanced and without any power demonstrated yet is certainly the most disappointing for me. Altherr got some scouts excited last season and his size seems to leave some projection for more. Hudson had the largest learning curve (being more of a football player) and with high level speed may turn into the best of the three.

    1. One interesting note from yesterday’s game was the Dugan got his first extra-base hit of the year on a double to right. His swing has looked pretty good this season, but until yesterday it had only yielded singles.

Also I’m not sure if we’ve officially mentioned it, but Dugan has scrapped switch-hitting and is now only batting from the left side.

    1. What does Susdorf have to do to get moved up to AAA, or at least get regular at-bats against lefties? He’s really on the fringe in terms of age but he’s always been a solid-very good producer with the bat since he was drafted. He’s another guy in the Rizz/Overbeck mold but he’s really handling the bat well this year.

      1. I think the Phillies view him as a Spidale/Slayden type. Organization filler but I would love to see him do better than that obviously. I wouldn’t be shocked if the only reason they moved him up is if due to injury or sudden retirement. Just my .02.

  6. PP maybe you can explain something to me, the texas rangers and others pay young unproven 16 year olds 5 million from latin american market. and its okay but the commission doesnt want teams to go over slot for high school and more advance college kids, in the us draft, is it me or is that nuts.

    Like

    1. I expect the International Market to come under some type of Draft system as well.
The current system is a little odd.

    2. Upwards of 35/40% of the MLB players are from the Latin/Caribbean market according to Ben Balder. The vast majority are the product of the youthful signing programs and academies employed by most major league teams.

      Like

      1. I think that high number is more of a reference to players under contract to a major league team’s total minor league system. There are more low-level DSL and VSL fringe prospects as a percentage simply because of the presence and complexes and the inexpensive price of signing lots of young prospects. At the major league level I think the number of international free agents is closer to 25%, though of course the total number of Latino players includes lots of Americans and Puerto Ricans these days.

  7. I see July 1st box score for Clearwater was not posted. Cosart pitched a good game but had no run support. Thrashers had only 2 hits.

  8. Nice to see Lidge get in a game this year today in Lakewood. Now that he is throwing in rehab games, might be an interesting time to talk about what his role will be when he comes back.

I’m going to assume by the time he would be activated, Madson will also be back and likely Carpenter and Perez will be sent out. My guess is that Madson retains the closer role, with Stutes and Bastardo manning the 7th/8th innings, with Lidge starting out in some mid relief / mop up roles until he hits his stride. If he does, he could be used as a 7th or 8th inning guy at most I think.

    Like

    1. If Lidge is a semblance of his former self, I think he could be a valuable weapon, as a guy that you bring in in the late innings when you absolutely need a strikeout–runner on 3rd, one out, etc. I’m happy to see Stutes succeeding so far this year, but I think that he’s probably the one who gets supplanted. Of course, all of that is prefaced on the idea that the OTHER relief pitchers are healthy, which does not appear to be a given this year. I for one would be really happy if they are able to lay off Bastardo a bit in the second half, given his injury history. Clearly, he is a weapon we want to have at out disposal in the playoffs.

  9. Anyone know what the reports are on Lidge, velocity wise tonight? Is there a gun there?

    1. Too early to worry about velocity. At this point, he’s basically starting spring training.

      1. Generally, Lidge said at the start of spring training, he’s in the upper 80’s (or atleast that’s how he played it in spring training), so I was wondering if he was close to that level.

        (that was me who posted)

        1. That is probably true normally but I expect he’s already begun throwing some prior to a normal ST in April. He’s basically hasn’t picked up a baseball until about a week ago so I would think it takes until the end of July before he’s going to be close to ready.

Truth is that I don’t expect much from him for the rest of the year.

  10. Reading Phillies pound out 22 hits . . . and lose 17-12. I could care less about the loss, I’m more interested in the fact that Galvis and Susdorf hit up a storm and Rivero hit his 9th homer.

  11. Soon they will have to take Susdorf seriously. How is his defense??? AAA????

Wow-illiamsport Reading’s hitting but better pitching.
