Here’s a new Phillies Discussion.
Media guys like Michael Barkan and Tom McCarthy have been making a lot of fuss about the Phillies closing to within 2-and-a-half games of the Braves (now 3 games after yesterday’s day off). It’s a nice way to recognize how well the Phillies have been playing lately. But a more important number to me is losses. We have 4 more losses than the Braves, and the Braves have “three games in hand”.
The Phillies start an important 9-game road trip today. They face some weak teams in Kansas City (35-53 and 4th in the AL Central) and Detroit (38-50 and 4th in the AL Central) sandwiched around Cincinnati (40-47 and 5th in the NL Central). The Phillies have to take advantage of this soft spot in their schedule. Playing down to the level of their competition or blaming bad outcomes on playing on the road won’t do. I would say 6 wins is the minimum expectation with 7 being more realistic depending on pitching match ups. Yeah, jinx.
I have seen the suggestions regarding any Phillies’ deadline moves this season. As I hinted in the comments section of our last discussion, I had planned to delve into some of the considerations the team will face when trading for help. This was spurred by the suggestion that the Phillies might consider taking on a contract that carries over to a subsequent season.
The Phillies accepted some dead money this season when the DFA-ed Walker and Castellanos. That artificially pushed their projected 40-man 2026 payroll over $316M. Competitive Balance Tax Threshold for 2026 is $244M. The projected thresholds are $244/$264/$284/$304, with the rates at each threshold escalating 50%/62%/95%/110%. The Phillies’ current projected tax is over $54M.
So, unless the Phillies trade one of the players under contract in a deadline deal instead of trading prospects, each $1M increase to their current payroll will be taxed at $1.1M.
Now, I’m not suggesting that they should or would continue with the current cast and no changes except from within the organization. Just that there are monetary considerations no matter what they do. And I can’t really see how they can move one of their big contracts (but the Sixers new GM did find a way to move Paul George and his contract). But, this season maybe they should just follow the expression “in for a penny, in for a pound”.
For those of us who have been thinking that the Phillies will get salary relief when Walker’s and Castellanos’ contracts (around $38M) come off the books, that’s not likely to happen (unless they can jettison a big contract).
The Phillies have 9 players under contract for the 2027 season. The AAVs for those 9 players salaries (plus a little over $20M for the pre-arbitration bonus pool and estimated player benefits) is over $236M.
- Wheeler, $42.000M
- Harper, $25.385M
- Turner, $27.273M
- Nola, $24.571M
- Schwarber, $30.000M
- Realmuto, $15.000M
- Luzardo, $27.000M
- Keller, $11.000M
- Sanchez, $16.471M
That puts them within $8M of this season’s threshold, and they still have to add 31 players to the 40-man roster.
They have 7 arbitration players. One player is entering his first arbitration year (Kerkering), 3 are entering their second arb year (Banks, Marchan, Hill), 3 are entering their 3rd arb year (Duran, Stott, Marsh), and one entering his fourth arb year (Stubbs). They don’t have to tender offers to these guys but would need to replace them on the roster if they don’t. (Fun fact, the Phillies are 41-23 since Stubbs’ contract was selected.)
They have 5 impending free agents – Bohm, Garcia, Alvarado, Sosa, and Mayza. Whether or not they keep any of these players their spots on the roster will have to be filled.
Depending on how many vacancies are not filled through arbitration and free agency, the remaining roster spots will be filled by players under team control like Crawford and Painter. However, the owners’ offer that was published in Baseball America suggested the minimum salary be raised to $1M (approximately a 28% increase over this season’s $780K), so the league minimum is very likely to go up significantly in the first year of the new CBA.
We assume the CBT threshold will be raised but we really don’t know. Maybe they finally negotiate a ceiling and floor that both parties can live with. I doubt it, but you never know. However, I don’t see any reasonable threshold that will offer much salary relief to the Phillies.
The 2028 season will see their CBT payroll drop to $183M when Wheeler and Keller come off the books. Duran, Stott, and Marsh will become free agents. I’ll not speculate on 2027 acquisitions and new CBT spending limits/penalties. But, if Wheeler continues to pitch as he is now, would (should) the Phillies and Wheeler consider a Kershaw-like relationship when his contract expires, year-by-year agreements?

Vis-a-vis Wheeler, if he decides he doesn’t want to retire after his current contract after all, I do think the Phillies will offer to go year-to-year for as long as he wants.

Phillies with another grab in the asian market with Ho Hua, anyone have any knowledge about him. I will give the team credit, right now they are trying in the international market and yes he is young and far away, but Renteria looks good. I was on him when I saw him in the Venezuela HR derby. We will see if it works whether he is kept or used to make the current team better but reading what Steve posted earlier, seems they are protecting the kid and looking out for his future, which is a good thing.

Thanks Jim I’m guy pushing for Gray. I just don’t think Phil’s can afford to trade 5 or 6 of best prospects due to dearth of talent in minors. Rincon only thing close to good glove at SS. Turner is a double clutch waiting to happen in big spot as has happened. Like u stated Nori only thing close that is true centerfielder. Marquez and Renteria future potential stars that will draw people to stadium down the line. Leaves Gage Wood and secondary level prospects as trade pieces to fill necessary holes. Although it hurts taking on $$ might be only way to really compete with Braves and Dodgers this fall. Somehow my named changed from Yoyo to whatever it is now

Name change has been a somewhat recent “feature”. I don’t have an explanation.

Marquez is pitching very well and the timing makes him very likely to be traded away. Nori had been hurt but I could see him as a 2nd piece in a trade. I’m pretty sure Renteria is close to untouchable but I’m not sure with Wood or even Painter in the right deal (not a rental). Why is McFarlane still at Reading?

Painter looks beastly tonight. Sharp breaking pitch couple 98ish fastballs by guys through 4

Gair might be someone to get excited about but it’s early. Since June 1, his numbers are elite. In 10 innings he has 18 Ks and 4 walks.

Somebody brought up Stoudt in the last discussion as a guy to watch. Stoudt has been on the 7-day IL for 20 days and hasn’t been in a game for 27 days, in case anyone has been looking for his name in Lehigh Valley box scores.

Gair needs to be challenged, I’d bump him up to Reading. McFarland needs to be in Philly yesterday.
