  1. The day off helped Hewitt. Proud of the Blueclaws for breaking up Harper’s hitting streak and giving him another collar today. Chances of a three-peat dwindling. Santana is not doing great, but his numbers have greatly improved since last year. Collier is making some noise. Truby has the athletic Blueclaws running and I think Hewitt has reached a career high in steals in May! Shreve is a major project. Shame on Sosa for blowing that save. These losses are the toughest.

    1. Yeah, they are the Runnin’ Blueclaws – four guys currently have more than seven steals, including Mendez, who looks like he might be a decent prospect at 3b. I have to admit to being unfamiliar with him, but had pretty decent numbers last year in the GCL (805 ops, iso over 200) and has shown decent plate discipline. I’ll have to start following him more closely.

    2. The guys said last night that Shreve has been moved to the pen to increase his velocity. His fastball was at 91-93 last night in the readings they gave. Santana lost a fly ball in the fog that might have cost Shreve an out in the 10th inning.

  3. The VSL started last night with a loss. An 18 year old catcher named Frank Rivas went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles. He also threw out 2 of 3 base stealers. Pitching was less than stellar but the starter, another Rivas (Moises), was smacked around in the 1st but settled down in his next 3 innongs of work. It’s 1 game, not much to gleen from it.

  6. PP has been hyping up Collier on the tweeter, and while his slash line isn’t all that impressive (320/359/679), he’s still only twenty years old. He came in with a reputation for having a plus hit tool; if he can continue flashing that on a regular basis, maybe there’s some hope for the top of that 2008 draft after all. The speed is nice to see, too; anyone have any fielding reports? If he could play CF, that would be a big boost for his value.

  7. Collier got off to a rough start (.513 OPS in April) but has been much better in May, and he’s been real good over his last 10 games. I think the tools were always there, he just had injury issues, and missing an entire year, a crucial year in terms of age/level/experience, was a big blow. I can imagine he spent April shaking off the rust and getting back into the swing of things. He has great speed and will definitely (unless something weird happened since) be able to stick in CF defensively.

    1. Does Collier have a good arm? I would guess it is average which is below Altherr, Santana, and Hewitt which is why he is in LF.
      Lakewood OF is interesting, as expected. Altherr back below Mendoza. Santana 2 hits and 4 Ks. Alvarez seems to be getting the least amount of playing time. Hewitt slugging is better but no BB and still unlikely to be protected from Rule 5. I am still hoping one of them pushes for a promotion mid season, though the A+ OF is pretty full as well.

  8. But who would take Hewitt next year, even if he has a good year this year? He would have to spend the entire season on a big league club. He can’t do anything for a major league club at this point.

    1. Exactly. It is a non-issue. Nobody is going take an A ball, outfielder in the rule 5 draft. A pitcher, with a good arm, who could be stashed as a reliever or a SS with a good glove would be the most likely taken in the major league rule 5.
      They may have to protect him, Alvarez and Castro in the minor league portion of the draft though.

  9. LKW OF- will now have 6 members as Michael Dabbs up from XST (Steven Batts released) . Never knew of Dabbs playing 2B, SS, or 3B (maybe 1B or C) so maybe another move is being planned. Also Jacob Borup back with Hector Neris to XST, pitching wise.
    The Stolen bases thing – 2 steals each for Edgar Duran and Collier, one each for Altherr and Hewitt who each have 10 for season. G. Mendez caught stealing. Off of 2 pitchers, so could have been a bad night for opponents C – Freitas- but he’s hitting .280.
    VSL- IF 1st lineup, Willians Astudillo at 2B, Jair Morelos at SS, Francisco Herrara at 3B, IF Albertin Chavez at DH, and Rafael Fernandez (listed at C) at 1B. Only other listed IF on roster is Jose Mayorga, also a former C, as is Astudillo. Also 5 others listed at C. Good game in 1st game offensively for young Frank Rivas.
    OF- Switch hitter Gregorio Machado in CF, LHH Wilmer Oberto in RF, and the 16 y.o. Alejandro Garcia in LF. Only other listed OF- Rosmel Fajardo.
    VSL players from last season still noted as in XST and likely to go to GCL for Rookie League: RHP’s Zael Honora, Leonel Bastidas, and Luis Morales: IF- Alejandro Villalobos; and OF’s Jorge Miranda and Bernardo Solarte.

  10. Does anyone know when what the update is on Drew Naylor? Hes been on the dl all season. Is he actually injured or is he in EST.

    1. I say most all on a minor league DL are actually injured, regardless of what some might claim. It does no good to keep a player doing nothing for a time , when there are marginal players they could release. Also, players injured before the season are often in XST. A player can be both injured and in XST.

  11. 1) I know this is phuturephillies.. but think Singleton had a good year in A- last year? Bryce Harper is hitting .366 with 9 HR in 131 AB. He is also learning a new position (excuse used this year as to why Singleton’s offense is not as good).

    2) So far. I think many of us should be humbled and appreciate that prospects are not a guarantee. Obvious there are streaks and slumps. But the lack of success our top 30 having this year is startling. Besides Valle, who else is having a “wow” type year. Pettibone and JRod are pitching well.. and obviously Worley has as well. Maybe Cosart is turning the corner. Colvin was hurt. But many of the younger prospects are near .200 (Rupp, Hernandez, Altherr). Nobody is hitting for power in our entire system. Makes me cheer for Rizz.. top prospect or not.. he produces and I’m excited to see how he will do in AAA

    3) the lack of bats in our system may be quite problematic. After Brown, who is the next hitter to reach and succeed in the majors? With Ibanez ;eaving, Polanco, Utley, and Rollins all aging. it could get ugly in 3 years. Certainly our major league offense cant get much worse.. then again look at Lakewood. maybe it could

    1. Yeah, so far, the pitching prospects have been okay, with a glimmer of hope on recent performances. The hitting prospects have generally been disappointing (except that it appears that Domonic Brown is busting at the seems to get back to the big leagues), but it’s still early yet.

      By July 1 things should have sorted themselves out pretty well and I expect Singleton to break out long before then.

      It seems that our tool shed outfielders are struggling. But all we need is one or two of them to turn out well for the investment to be worthwhile, still it is frustrating to watch.

    2. Oh yeah, and the lack of decent hitting middle infielders is beyond maddening. I know we lost Harold Garcia, but he projects as a utility guy in any event. There is definitely a weird distribution of talent in the system. Tons of pitchers, tons of outfielders, a catcher and catch-as-catch can (so sayeth Catch 22).

    3. I am not down on Singleton because he is not as good as Bryce Harper. Harper is the #1 (or #2) prospect in all of baseball, perhaps one of the best of all time. Singleton remains a top prospect whom we should all be high on.

      Pettibone is 20 in A+ with a FIP of 2.83. That is a hot start. His K/9 is not impressive (5.9) and he doesn’t generate as many ground balls as one might hope from a guy who doesn’t get a lot of Ks, but so far he has made me say “wow”.

      Those two points aside, I agree with your basic premise that it is surprising to see so few of our top 30 impress so far.

      1. I think most of the starting pitchers are just fine – really too much panic over deceptive (in some cases) ERAs and small samples. I think on the whole, though, the performance of our non-pitching prospects have been legitimately disappointing, even giving Singleton a (deserved) pass.

      2. Looking at the list in more detail, of the pitchers the only guy I see as a legitimate disappointment on the top 30 list is Zeid, and he was pretty low on the list to begin with. Whereas among the position players, I count 6 that I would classify as legitimately disappointins, with of course the normal small(ish) sample size qualification.

        1. Was hoping for more from Zeid also, but he was double jumped, so this is not totally unexpected. Maybe he makes the Worley/Stutes (both double jumped as well) like transition and it takes him that extra year in AA.

          Hitters
          1. Cameron Rupp
          2. Jiwan James
          Others, basically due to age, I give a Pass. I expected these two older players to at least show some power.
          Pitchers:
          No big disappointments really.
          Zeid has had a few terrible outings, but he was double jumped. Probably adjusting to the competition. T.May is still walking guys, but that is not surprising. Shreve has been mediocre, but I didn’t expect anything from him anyway.

    4. I dont think anyone’s really using the “New position” excuse for Singleton. He’s very young in a pitcher’s league and he’s holding his own so far. The peripherals are still very positive on him. He’s also been battling an ankle issue from reports so that isn’t helping his power output. The power will come and he’ll be fine. The huge green flag on him is his continued patience at the plate.

  12. I don’t know who else remembers, but there was some talk back in 2009 that the Phils could take Slade Heathcott. I thought it was a great idea, myself. Then he got helium and moved up draft boards. Anyway great article on him: http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2011/may/13/tale-of-salvation/

    While he has the makings of a stud, perhaps it is best the Phils did not get a chance to draft him. I hope his conversion to Christianity and sobriety sticks.

  13. I think a farm system has an inverted relationship with the success of the big club. When you look around the league at some of the younger prospects now performing most of them are on teams that have been horrid for a long stretch of time.

    Nationals=Strasburg/Storen/Harper
    KC=Moustakas/Hosmer

    My observation is un-scientific but pick a superstar player who is still with the team that drafted him and evaluate where he was drafted. There are very few Albert Pujols floating around in the league.

    I guess you would have to give me some guys that we passed on that are now lighting it up in another system.

    2. That is fantastic. Assuming he catches fire again, I don’t think they can afford to keep him on the farm much longer as even if he is average to start, he may be an upgrade over what they have now. I think it’s inevitable that they will trade for a hitter, but it won’t happen for at least a month.

  17. Saw Kissock is pitching out of the pen tonight for Reading. Who takes his spot? Cisco? May with 11Ks in 7IP for CLW. Dom Brown with a SF RBI and a BB so far

  18. I swear if Dane Sardinha and his no good lazy as* ever steps on an MLB field again in a Phillies uniform it will be a crime. If this guy can’t tag a damn guy out at the plate, what can he do? His offense is terrible, he looks like he is scared to death when there’s a play at the plate, what a DISGRACE. I am asolutely appalled at either his fear or his lack of effort but doesn’t matter which it is, he is pathetic. I haven’t seen a guy let someone slide past him so easily since the days of that fat as* catcher from about 5 yrs ago that did the same thing, can’t remember his name but he was a disaster….Sardinha must go. Ridiculous

    2. Yeah Sardinha has looked bad this year…he has a good arm but he looks scared on plays at the plate. Kratz is looking good offensively. Not sure about his D. So if Stutes goes down I guess Herndon comes back?

      2. There are 4 or 5 different options in our system that would be more effective Major League contributors right now than David Herndon (if not more). Some may not be 40’d, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t frustrating.

  20. About 40 pitches. Schwimer was pitching extremely effectively and Sandberg just let him go.

    Rough outing for Worley. The Yankees got several hard hit balls off him and worked several deep counts (somewhere around 75 pitches in three innings). Jorge Vazquez is a beast of a hitter when he gets his pitch.

    Ryne Sandberg is a class act, taking several minutes to sign autographs and going to each side of the dugout.

  21. Herndon won’t be called up because he needs more time to refine his game. Too short a time has passed since he was shelled up here. It could be Scwhimmer, Perez gives you another lefty, Grilli is not an option because of injury. I don’t want to see Zagurski because he has gotten several opportunities up here and not impressed. In the meantime, big Scott Mathieson idles in our bullpen. He failed to take advantage of an opportunity he had against the Braves more than a week ago.
    Brown will get called up soon, so long as he stays healthy. He’s going to push too hard and Ibanez and Fransisco are going to continue to be totally inadequate. Fransisco looks totally lost and Ibanez is not the same hitter he used to be. Chuck was quoted as saying that Mayberry needs to prove he can play everyday. I think he’s getting close to point where you have to play him. He picked up another steal today off of Molina and hit two balls hard, one of which was an out but managers take note of that. His approach against righthanders seems sound. His arm appears superior to both Fransico and Ibanez’s weak arms, his power is greater and his speed is greater. I think that we need to see him make good contact consistently a little bit more though before we have to let him out of the prison. He has the potential to be as good as Werth.

  22. It was Barajas that SOB, him and Sardinha should be put on an island and forced to film Cast Away 2 for the next 10 years.
    I think the pitcher they recall will be in this order of most likely – 1) Worley, 2) Schwimmer, 3) Herndon, 4) Zagurski

    Mayberry needs to play more. He looks great in the outfield, on the basepaths, his approach against righties is much better than advertised, and I believe he is better than Francisco right now and not just because Ben is in a slump.
