Phillies sign Dominican LHP Franklyn Zavala for $330K

Jim Salisbury has the scoop on twitter. 6’4 LHP. Fits the mold for the Phillies in terms of the money they like to spend. Should be interesting, and I’ll post more details as they are available.

End of the Year Report–Starters, Bottom Half

Clearly the strength of the Minor League system, the starting pitching at the bottom half of the system has the potential to place several members into the Phils rotation by 2013.  Next year could be a real juggling act with a lot of talent and a limited number of spots. Look for the first of the reports on the bullpen on Friday.

Lakewood

Jared Cosart, 20, 14 starts, 7-3 with a 3.79 ERA; 71.1 IP 60H 16BB 77K, 1.93 GO/AO, .224 opp. avg., .234 vs. LH, .218 vs. RH, .314 with RISP, 1.06 WHIP. Cosart’s health problems continued in 2010 as he missed the last two plus months of the season with elbow issues.  When he pitched prior to his injury he was somewhere between very good and dominant in the SALLY.  With only 14 starts at Lakewood under his belt, the Phils may give him a month with the BlueClaws before the move up to Clearwater. End of the Year Report–Starters, Top Half

A look at Starting Pitching for Lehigh Valley, Reading and Clearwater at the end of 2010 and what we can expect going into 2011. Lakewood, Williamsport and GCL Phils to come on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Lehigh Valley

Nate Bump, 34, 20 starts, 8-4 with a 3.35 ERA; 107.1 IP 123  25 BB 54K, 7 HR allowed, 1.43 GO/AO; .293 opp. avg., .252 with RISP; 1.38 WHIP. Bump was an International League All star and then the wheels fell off in the second half of the season as he was dealing with a myriad of physical issues, starting just 1 game in all of August and September.  When he pitched, he was effective.  2011: Most likely another organization. Lakewood SAL Championship, Game 4 Wrap

Back-to-back, baby!  Lakewood finished off an historic season with a 4-2 win over Greenville to win their second straight SAL title while becoming the first SAL team to win a league title after winning their division in both halves of the season.  Sebastian Valle’s three-run jack in the fifth was the difference.  Jonathan Pettibone got the win and Josh Zeid (11 up, 12 down) picked up the save.  I’ll be back later in the week with a year-end wrap.

Lakewood SAL Championship, Game 3 Wrap

Lakewood won a thrilling Game 3 on a walk-off single by Jeremy Barnes.  An excellent start by Brody Colvin who held Greenville in check on a run on three hits over five innings.  Kudos to a big-time clutch outing by Kyle Carr who came into a second and third, one-out jam in the seventh and struck out the two batters he faced.  Game 4 this afternoon at 4:05 with Jonathan Pettibone on the hill.  In the event Lakewood loses, another game will follow with Trevor May pitching.

End of Season Review–OF

A final look at the Outfielders in the Minor League system at year’s end, how they produced in 2010, and what we can expect in 2011. A look at the Starting Pitchers in the Top Half of the system (Lehigh Valley, Reading and Clearwater) coming next, probably Sunday.

Lehigh Valley

John Mayberry, 26, 495 AB’s; .267/.328/.412 with 15 HR and 65 RBI; .350 vs. LH, .239 vs. RH; 20/23 SB; .266 with RISP; 7% bb rate, 21% k rate; 307 Post All Star. Mayberry has had the same trouble this year as in years past in that he has alot of trouble hitting righties and strikes out too much. That being said, he hits over .340 against lefties, can run and produces runs.  He has one option left and I wouldn’t be all that surprised if he were in a dogfight with Ben Francisco(arb eligible) for the 5th outfielder spot next season in Philadelphia. Remembering Chase Utley’s first year as a “pseudo regular” for the Phils, Charlie Manuel may want to platoon Dominic Brown against certain lefties and Mayberry could provide punch against those lefties. JC Ramirez had labrum surgery last week

This is slightly old news now, a few days anyway, and it might have been mentioned in the comments somewhere, but I wanted to put a post up anyway.

Update –> Reading comprehension FAIL on my part. Hip labrum surgery. He’ll be back by ST. Should be fine. False alarm. Sorry.

Lakewood SAL Championship, Game 2 Wrap

Lakewood defeated Greenville last night 6-1 to even the best of 5 SAL Championship series at a game apiece.  Good pitching by Julio Rodriguez and Josh Zeid and a 3-4 night by Jiwan James paced the ‘Claws.  And there was a bench-clearing brawl.  Game 3 Thursday night in Lakewood with Brody Colvin on the hill.  Links to the boxscore and a couple game stories:

End of Season Review–Catcher

A look at the production (or lack thereof) from the Catcher position in the Phils organization in 2010 with predictions on where players will end up next year. Next up: The Outfield on Friday or Saturday.

Lehigh Valley

Paul Hoover, 34, 255 AB’s; .247/.326/.345 with 2HR and 21 RBI; .300 vs. LH, .231 vs. RH, .246 with RISP, .288 Post All STar; 9% bb rate, 23% k rate.  24/81 (30%) CS; 7 errors (.986), 6 passed balls in 67 games. Hoover did not play as well in 2010 as he did in 2009 and the years may be catching up with him.  Still serviceable as a AAA catcher but the Phils may want to look elsewhere for depth. Lakewood SAL Championship, Game 1 Wrap

Lakewood dropped Game 1 of the SAL Championship series 3-1 in Greenville tonight.  Trevor May had another good start, but a lack of offense and some very suspect baserunning were too much for the BlueClaws to overcome.   Continue reading Lakewood SAL Championship, Game 1 Wrap
