‘Pigs Weekend Update
Another 1-2 weekend in the books. See below for the details, along with a few notes.
Friday–Lehigh Valley began a road trip in Rochester with a 5-1 loss on Friday evening. It was fairly smooth sailing for starter Vance Worley (0-2), who had given up just a lone run until the 7th, when he left the game after giving up an RBI single to Eric Lis. Oscar Villarreal entered and immediately(first pitch) gave up a three run homer, allowing two of Worley’s inherited runners to score, giving Rochester an insurmountable 3 run lead. Worley’s line was 6.1IP 5H 4ER 1BB 7K. The only Lehigh Valley run came in the 4th when a Cody Ransom sac fly scored John Mayberry who had doubled. It was a big night for Mayberry who went 3-4. Matt Rizzotti chipped in with two hits as well. Lehigh Valley left 10 men on base and were 1-12 with RISP. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update

Lakewood
Brody Colvin, 20, 23 starts, 6-7 with a 3.17 ERA; 122IP 109H 39BB 108K, 1.20 GO/AO; .236 opp. avg., .214 vs. LH, .253 vs. RH, .206 with RISP, 1.21 WHIP, 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA since July 1. After a rough April, Colvin has been dominant throughout the rest of the year. His innings are being monitored as he is already at 120+.
Trevor May, 20, Clearwater, 16 games, 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA; 70IP 53H 61BB 90K, 0.76 GO/AO; .212 opp. avg., 1.63 WHIP. Lakewood: 8 starts, 5-2 with a 2.44 ERA; 48IP 34H 18BB 67K, 0.87 GO/AO; .199 opp. avg., 1.08 WHIP. Totals: 24 games, 10-7 with a 3.97 ERA; 118IP 87H 79BB 157K, 0.80 GO/AO, .207 opp. avg. May seems to have gotten both his confidence and his control back in Lakewood. Hitters have struggled against him at both levels, as May clearly has Low A mastered. Sorry for the late post. Im desperately short on time. If someone wants to add the box score links, that would be great. Other than that, discuss away.
Report on Williamsport morning game 8/11
Courtesy of poster nyphilsmaniac (promoted from comments):
–Cesar Hernandez got the day off so Duran (SS) led off. Duran looked fine in the field making all routine plays. He one nice single, stole 2nd but then got picked off.
–Miguel Alvarez had only one hit but hammered a line drive that was right at the second baseman in another AB.

You know the drill.
GCL Phillies game was suspended
Williamsport lost 6-1.
Lakewood off.
Clearwater postponed
Reading won 7-6.
Lehigh Valley won 5-1.
Something random. I missed this, but the Phillies signed Drew Rundle a few days/weeks ago, and he’s been at Williamsport. He was a 14th round pick in 2006 by the Cubs, but received a $500K bonus, well above slot. His report back then
Two Oregon-bred outfielders went in the first round in 2005, but both Portland’s Trevor Crowe and Madras’ Jacoby Ellsbury were drafted out of college, not high school. Rundle entered the spring with a chance to join them as first-rounders after a strong summer on the showcase circuit, where he showed the ability to hit off top-flight pitchers in his draft class with good velocity. That momentum didn’t carry over to the spring, though, and his hopes for being drafted highly rest primarily on his athletic ability and his performance last summer. Rundle has changed his approach this spring, spreading out at the plate (with a stance similar to Jim Edmonds’) to gain better plate coverage. He’s not strong enough to generate power from the stance and had only one homer all spring as the draft approached. Unlike Edmonds (or burners Crowe and Ellsbury), Rundle doesn’t profile as a center fielder even though he’s a present average runner, so scouts are seeing a corner outfielder who isn’t showing present power. He has average arm strength, and scouts who like him point out he hasn’t seen much to hit all spring. An Arizona recruit as was Crowe before him, he’s expected to go off the board in the first five rounds.
He was decent from 2006-2008, but really struggled last year. After hitting 10 HR in 2008, he hit just 3 last year. He’s never played above A+ ball, and he’s now back in SS ball, but still interesting. I remember reading about him during the 2006 draft, always interesting to see these guys pop up. Not saying he’s a great prospect or anything, but interesting nonetheless.
5 Crosscutters named All Stars
Five Williamsport Crosscutters have been named to the New York Penn League All Star Team, in the game to be held next Tuesday in Staten Island, NY. Outfielder Miguel Alvarez, 2B Cesar Hernandez, P Eric Pettis, P Chase Johnson and Catcher Jeff Lanning were all named to the NL team (Note: Lanning was named as an injury replacement).
Both Johnson (21st round, 09) and Pettis (35th round, 10) were Phillies draft picks, while both Alvarez (2007) and Hernandez (2006) were signed as free agents. Additionally, Lanning was signed as a free agent this season after being originally drafted by the Twins two years ago.
