August 25th Discussion

Short on time and resources today, but wanted to open a new post to discuss anything on your mind with regard to Phillies prospects. I didn’t even have time to look at last night’s box scores, if there were any. If someone wants to edit this post with box scores, that would be fantastic. Thanks

Phillies Sign Nate Robertson to a Minor League Deal

The Phillies have signed LHP Nate Robertson to a minor league contract and have assigned him to AAA Lehigh Valley.  Robertson, a veteran of nine major league season pitched for the Marlins this year, going 6-8 with a 5.47 ERA in 19 starts before being released by the Marlins.  Following his time with the Marlins, he was picked up by the Cardinals organization and was 2-1 with a 9.45 ERA in AAA Memphis before his release.

Robertson is expected to make his debut Thursday when he starts for Lehigh Valley against Scranton.  Robertson was a 5th round pick of the Marlins in the 1999 draft and had his best major league season in 2006 when he went 13-13 with a 3.84 ERA in 32 starts while accruing 208.2 innings for the Tigers.

Jon Musser Interview

(this is James) Big thanks to jkearse for another interview!

One of the three draft day deadline signings for the Phillies, Jon Musser stands tall at 6’5 weighing 205 pounds. The young right hander is currently 18 years old and won’t turn 19 until December. ‘Muss’ was a 21 round draft pick of the Phillies and can hit 90s on the radar gun along with a good curveball and solid changeup. Because of these pitches, he was projected as a seventh to tenth round pick but slipped due to injury concerns. Jon appears now to be completely healthy and has been improving every year. The Phillies have grabbed a few over-slot pitchers that have been really effective in Brody Colvin and Jarred Cosart. Hopefully, Jon Musser and Kevin Walter can add to this list of success. Thanks to Muss for his time.

GCL Phillies cancelled
Williamsport postponed
Lakewood postponed
Clearwater cancelled
Reading won 6-4.
Lehigh Valley won 7-0

* The weather sucks
* I’m on the Harold Garcia bandwagon
* Justin De Fratus has been awesome at Reading. Every time he pitches well, I feel pretty great, as I started that bandwagon waaaaay back when. I think he is in the majors next year, and the Phillies damn well better protect him this winter.
* Overbeck with an .881 OPS in 58 August AB, which is something, but not much (small sample size, obv)

Go!

Quick Notes

After one of his better outings of the season on the mound last night, former 1st round draft choice Joe Savery will make his hitting debut tonight, as designated hitter, batting 7th for Lehigh Valley against Rochester.

Hall of Fame closer Bruce Sutter has been hired by the Phillies as a Minor League Pitching consultant where he will work primarily in Reading and Lehigh Valley.  He will be in Lehigh Valley tomorrow evening.  A good hire considering the potential influx of young talent into the Phils bullpen over the next year or two.

Lakewood Weekly Report (8/16-8/22)

Recap:  Lakewood went 2-5 on the week, losing a few games late, although the starting pitching also wasn’t as strong as it has been.  The highlights of the week were Trevor May’s 12-strikeout no-walk performance and a two-HR game from Jiwan James.  The ‘Claws are now 32-23 in the second half, 74-51 overall, and remain in first place in the SAL North with 14 games remaining in the regular season. ‘Pigs Weekend Update

A look at the ‘Pigs weekend with a few notes, transactions and probables attached at the end.

Friday–About as rare as a solar eclipse, the ‘Pigs won in both extra innings and by one run in their 7-6 victory over Pawtucket on Friday evening closing out their road trip. In what was their second biggest comeback in team history (5 runs), Lehigh Valley received excellent pitching out of the bullpen to keep them in the game and allow the victory in the 10th inning when none other than Dane Sardinha scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error. After a rough outing by starter Brian Mazone (4IP 6R,4ER), the combination of Gordon, Zagurski and Villarreal pitched 6 scoreless with Oscar Villarreal (3-3) picking up the win in relief. The ‘Pigs down 5-0 going into the 5th, scored 4 runs in the 5th to put them back in the ballgame with a two run double by Brian Bocock and an RBI single by Rich Thompson the big blows.  Bocock led the team offensively going 2-2 with a double, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases, and 3 RBI’s. Sunday Mailbag

Thank you for all of the emails. I received a few emails with very similar questions, so I just picked one and went with it. If I didn’t get to your email this time, I’ll try and do better next time. I’m currently working on a big draft related piece that covers lots of philosophical/economical topics, but I’m going to wait until I have all of the data to analyze. I’ve got a few more things cooking, so stay tuned. Check below the fold for my answers to your questions.
