Sunday draft gossip post

Check this spot and I’ll try and post any Phillies relevant gossip that comes up on who may or may not get to the Phillies at #27. Frankie Pilliere at AOL Fanhouse indicates the Brewers are going to take Jesse Biddle at #14 overall, which would be quite a leap of faith. In another strange one, Pilliere has Austin Wilson going to Toronto at #11. I’m not buying that one either.

  1. Good stuff. I said this somewhere else but given the total state of flux after the first 4-6 picks you really have to hope that the Phillies have done their homework and are prepared to make a quick decision on someone that they thought might not be available when then picked. Somebody unexpected is going to fall in their range and I don’t want them just locked in on the guys mentioned in the Salisbury article.

  2. Baseball Prospectus Mock Draft has the Phillies taking…

    27. Philadelphia Phillies: Phillies = tools, right? That seems to always be the case, and this year is no different. If there’s a player with big tools, he’s been linked to this pick at some point. Georgia high school star Kaleb Cowart fits the bill as good as any of them. He’s a first-round talent as either a third baseman with power and speed, or a righty with 91-94 mph heat and a plus curveball, which speaks to how special an athlete he is.

Pick: Kaleb Cowart, 3B/RHP, Cook County HS (GA)

  3. MinorLeagueBall.com has the Phillies selecting…

    27) Phillies: Jesse Biddle, LHP, Germantown Friends HS, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: If anyone can get Biddle to forgo the University of Oregon, it would be the Phillies. His ceiling is quite high, he’s local, and he fits their development philosophy well.

    * The most interesting part of this mock draft is that they have Nick Castellanos, 3B, Archbishop McCarthy HS, falling to the Yankees at #32 and he has Kaleb Cowart and Austin Wilson falling all the way out of Round 1…all 3 due to signability. They have Anthony Ranaudo falling out of Rd 1 due to injury concerns.

  4. We can’t draft a Cowart. We already have a Cosart and a Colvin, not to mention a Colby Shreve. Too many guys with like sounding names. Many times guys get them mixed up when writing about the ones we have.

  5. Speaking of draft gossip, Bob Brookover has a good column in today’s http://www.philly.com that is very draft related. I would put the link but it looks like it has some kind of funny code to it. In the article it mentions the Brandon Workman negotiations 3 years back, it was titled ” Phils made money move that may cost them”. It said that Philly offered , like , 250 K and Workman wanted 350 K, so they decided they would rather pay Julian Sampson the extra money , because he was performing better at the time. It confirms that Sampson is currently in XST as thought by many on here. It also quotes Marti Wolever on the current draft, He says they really like Austin Wilson, confirms Amaro visited out west to see him, And Wolever says signability may be an issue, but he thinks they should take the best player available, and may go over slot to do so. Like that.

  7. There is something about the draft I just don’t get. The Brandon Workman / Julian Sampson example mentioned in the article is Exhibit A.

All the time here we talk about not getting too high or too low on young players based on a month or two of performance. Especially 18, 19, 20 year old kids.

Yet the Phillies and other teams may move guys way up or way down draft boards based on the 2 months preceeding the draft and the 2 months following the draft depending on their performance over that period?

Are the Phillies telling me that what made them pick Brandon Workman in the 3rd round wasn’t worth an extra $100K because of 2 months of substandard performance AFTER they drafted him? That sounds crazy to me.

Somebody help me understand this please.

  8. Scout.com’s mock draft:

    27. Philadelphia Phillies
    Tyrell Jenkins
    Henderson (Tex.) H.S.
    Position: RHP
As is often the case with the Phillies, it is almost all about upside with their first round pick. Jenkins fits that bill, and the Phillies are one of the few teams that could pop him in the first round. The Phillies could also consider Michigan outfielder Ryan LaMarre or San Diego outfielder Gary Brown with this pick.

  9. I don’t want DeShields either. I played HS baseball and football against his dad, and if he is anything like his father he will be a solid MLB player. But I think the Phillies need some more power bats in their organization.

My focus in this draft would be…

    1. C – Preferably guys with good arms, good defense, and the right intangibles. Offense can be developed. See Carlos Ruiz.

    2. 3B – Big frames with big arms and big bats…but the athleticism to play good defense at 3B. Calling Scott Rolen. I would be happy to see the Phillies go overslot with some of the well-known suspects (Nick Castellanos, Kaleb Cowart, etc)

    3. P – I like the strategy the Phillies employ of taking big-framed guys at Pitcher. No concerns here as I trust them to make solid choices. If they really like Jesse Biddle or Tyrell Jenkins I am okay with that.

    4. OF – I think they have enough speed / top of the order guys in the OF. If they go OF early again, I think it should be outfielders that have the potential to be true power bats. Could be college guys (Brett Eibner, Bryce Brentz, etc) or a high upside HS kid with potential power (Austin Wilson).

*** Of course I believe in BPA, but at #27 I find it hard to believe that they won’t be able to find some level of equality between organizational needs and BPA.

  10. Keith Law’s most recent draft buzz around Micah Gibbs and Brandon Workman…

    * LSU catcher Micah Gibbs had two hits including home run No. 10 on the season as the Tigers moved on with an 11-10 win over UC Irvine. Gibbs is getting buzz starting in the sandwich round. His teammate, centerfielder Leon Landry — one of the more underrated prospects in the country in my opinion — had three hits Friday and is hitting .336/.420/.509 with 16 stolen bases and a 30-24 BB/K ratio on the season. Gibbs is hitting .392 with 10 home runs.

    * Texas right-hander Brandon Workman went to 12-1 on the season with a 130-pitch, complete-game shutout over Rider that included seven strikeouts and a 16-2 groundout-to-fly out ratio. Workman is being mentioned as high as No. 7 to the New York Mets and figures to get plenty of consideration in Round 1 as a potential No. 2 starter with durability as his calling card.

  11. From MLBBonusBaby…

According to multiple industry sources, the Kansas City Royals have an agreement in place with University of Miami catcher Yasmani Grandal and will take him with the fourth overall pick in the first round on Monday.
    . . .
Given the nature of the draft, there is no way to completely confirm that a deal is in place until it becomes official on Monday, but industry sources who spoke with FanHouse are confident that the deal has been agreed to. Details of the deal are not yet available and most likely won’t be until after the draft.

  12. Jonathan Mayo at MLB.com has the Phillies taking…

    27. Philadelphia Phillies : Taijuan Walker, RHP, Yucaipa HS, Calif.
The Phillies tend to like the high-ceiling athletes, though it’s usually associated with position players. That’s why some see a Golden in this spot. But Walker fits the description on the mound and while he’s been inconsistent, his tools are undeniable.

  13. I don’t care if they take another OF with their pick as long as the scouting reports think he will be able to hit advanced pitching unlike hewitts scouting report. We need some Polish kids in the system so if Wojo falls to them then lets get him.

  14. On Workman – anybody who’s 21, is throwing 130 pitch complete games in college and is being talked of as some kind of a workhorse is PRECISELY the type of player who is likely to have arm problems in the future due to overuse. If I had a kid that talented, I’d never let him pitch for a college coach who might abuse his arm like that. A screwed up swing can be fixed. A screwed up arm is typically gone for good.

He’s really not that polished though, he has no secondary stuff. He’s a guy who will blow through the low minors looking like a world beater, than get to Reading and struggle.

  18. AJ Cole seems like a good pick at #27. Don’t know why his stock dropped so much, as he was projected as top 10 pick

With size, projectability and at least two outstanding pitches, Cole is at or near the top of prep pitching lists. His fastball already touches 94 mph, and there’s lots of room for growth in his 6-foot-5 frame. He adds a wipeout power slurve to put hitters away and even shows a feel for a changeup. There are some small concerns about his arm action, but his delivery overall is good and he has decent command. James Taillon might be the first high school arm to go off the board, but Cole won’t be far behind.

The prepster is an advanced hitter for his age. He has a good frame for adding strength. Scouts are saying he could be a difficult sign, though.

  22. Harper knows only one speed and that’s all out… and I would never want to change that about him. If he were to stay behind the plate, he’d wear himself out by June each year.

  24. The buzz from what I have read on why AJ Cole has fallen some is his personality / mental ability to handle failure. More than one scout has said they don’t like how he can get frustrated and angry on the mound.

Who knows how much weight to give those subjective evaluations, I have never seen anything more than an internet video clip of the guy.

Finally understand why workman didnt sign, what I read is the phillies offered 250,000 he wanted 325,000. they watch him pitch that summer and he didnt pitch well, so they went and gave sampson the money felt he was better prospect at the time, cant fault them for that. just a mistake ,but all teams do that.

Harper’s bat isn’t nearly as impressive as a corner OF as it is at Catcher. A huge part of what supposedly makes him so special is his spot behind the plate. Its good to see that the Nats now take their instructions from Scott Boras.

  28. I think the number of names being thrown out there for the Phils in mock drafts indicates just how unknown it is what the Phils will do and how unclear the draft becomes after the first 10-15 picks or so. A lot of those mock selections sounded like “The Phils like tools, and this guy has tools.” That’s one thing I like about Keith Law, his mock drafts are based on which players he hears each team’s scouts have been looking at most frequently. We’ll see what happens tonight!
