The Phillies activated Brad Lidge prior to starting their series today against the Braves. To make room on the roster, Nelson Figueroa, 36, was designated for assignment. As opposed to the last time Lidge was activated when Antonio Bastardo got sent down, Bastardo seems to have solidified his roster spot at least for the time being. The next set of decisions, assuming everyone stays healthy (big assumption) will come with the activation of JA Happ and/or Ryan Madson over the next month or two.

I always thought Figueroa’s time here would be short. He wasn’t pitching much lately and with the starters generally pitching well he was just taking up space.
It may also be a sign that they like the progress Nate Bump has made this year at LHV.

My guess is that Fugueroa became expendable this time around because Kendrick has righted his ship after a terrible start and Carpenter is doing well in AAA.
There is less need for a guy who can start.

Like the other two posters,I would have to agree that it would be no big deal if Figueroa didn’t accept his assignment. In fact, I think it would be better for all parties if he didn’t.

I think the next one to go is Herndon…. hopefully we can work out a deal with the Angels to keep him though

Mikey: I think Herndon would have to clear waivers with all MLB teams and be sold back to Angels for a trade to happen. He has shown enough for lots of teams to have an interest and will probably be claimed. The best shot is for him to get his 90 days in and start DL-ing him and then bring him back up in September.

Every team needs a garbage innings eater in the pen, so that’s why I think Herndon will be here for the year. I could see Bastardo being sent down again when they need to clear a spot.

Herndon pitched the last 2 innings of the 1 – 0 loss to the Marlins. They threw him into a tight game situation where they needed to stay close in case the bats woke up. He’s good enough to stick with the club but there will have to be some DL’ing like DD says above. It doesn’t necessarily have to be Herndon but someone.

I think you guys need to look at what Herndon’s numbers were for the month of May. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

I wonder what everyone thinks the “D” in “DL” means.? I would submit that you have to have some slightly tenable argument that the player is injured. If you fake it with Herndon, I think you could end up in big trouble with the Commissioner’s office.
