Clearwater All Stars, Gillies Update

Several members of the Clearwater roster were named to the Florida State League All Star Game today.  The game will be played Saturday June 12, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. The names are as follows: Pitchers: Austin Hyatt, Justin DeFratus, Trevor May; 3B: Cody Overbeck.  One other notable named to the team from a Phillies fan perspective is Catcher Travis D’Arnaud.

Reading CF Tyson Gillies, who has been on the DL for the last two weeks with a strained hamstring had a setback in his recovery which will delay his return to the Reading lineup.

  1. Online voting for the Eastern League All-Stars on a team-by-team basis. You can select a pitcher and position player for each team. Reading Phillies website or various Eastern League or MiLB outlets.

  2. Bill, I agree with you – I think Overbeck will be up to Reading by mid-June. This way, he’ll have a statistically significant number of at bats at AA before the season ends. There’s no reason to rush him – heck, we’ve got a really good third-baseman in the majors. But, even if he is a good fielder (not clear to me as yet) and keeps hitting, absent a completely dominant showing at AA, it’s a good idea for him to get another full season of minor league ball under his belt in 2011.

  3. On Gillies, I am glad they’re taking their time with him. I still have high hopes for him – he was just coming around when he got hurt. Like Gose, there’s no rush with Gillies. At least one (and perhaps both) of those guys are going to end up in a trade anyway – I don’t expect the Phils to have an outfield of both Gillies and Gose – the teams wants power too much to allow that to happen. It’s possible both could be on the ML roster for a short time, much as Bourn and Victorino were for a while, but, long-term, it’s very unlikely to happen and it’s all several years down the road in any event.

  4. Agreed – he really isn’t being block by Boz – it may be a temporary logistical issue at the very most, but it really has nothing to do with Overbeck’s progression. We have to give them a little more credit than that.

  6. I stole this from We Should Be GMs:

    Wrong Rule 5:
No offense to David Herndon and his 4.41 ERA and 1.78 WHIP, but the Phils have the wrong Rule 5 pitcher. In fact, the one they should have was in their system, but was let go. Say hello to Carlos Monasterios, the 24 year old now with the Dodgers and a sparkling 2-0 record with a 2.20 ERA and 1.15 WHIP through 13 games and 28.2 innings pitched. You may recall Monasterios was one of the “prized” prospects in the bundle the Phils got from the Yankees in the Bobby Abreu/Cory Lidle trade. Go figure, the one useful guy in that package was cast aside. Idiots!

“We have to give them a little more credit than that.”

As far as I can tell there seems to be two maybe three different path through which decisions are made, not counting the hideous “winter meeting”.
Some are perfectly logical and baseball wise. Then there is the goofy “what the hell” branch. Oh to be a spy or fly.

  8. Come to think about it (retro of course), if they were dead set
on changing Aumont’s delivery and getting him starter innings,
Clearwater would of been a better place to start. Now they are caught in a vise and the kid suffers.

  10. Not to be an apologist for the Phils or anything, but it’s not like Carlos ever set the world on fire in their system. But, yeah, when you run a team, it’s easy to overlook some prospects that are not among the golden boys of the organization. As a kid in New York (sorry, it’s true, but I’ve been a Phils guy for almost 20 years), I remember the Mets having two relief pitching prospets. Neil Allen and Jeff Reardon. But Allen was always deemed the golden boy and Reardon was traded away almost as an afterthought – it was a pretty bad miscalculation as Reardon because probably one of the 15 or 20 best relief pitchers of all time and Allen became an okay major leaguer, but not much more. I think, with all the hot shot arms, they lost Carlos in the shuffle and, instead of giving him a chance to step up, they wrote him off an let him head out. Still have some hope for Herndon, however, he could end up being a good player . . . or he could end up as a bum.

  11. Bill: If they like the guy and there is an opening, he might get promoted (seems he has been in A ball for eons). But not over any more bona fide prospects. Now if he were a nice-fielding middle infielder with those stats, bring him on. That said,, he might have earned a look at Reading next year if he keeps it up.

  12. I think Derrick Mitchell is barely on their radar screen – he will be shuffled or retained as other organizational priorities dictate.

  13. Maybe next year, Derrick Mitchell will become the new Carlos Monasterios.

  14. Brody Colvin with another great start last night. Hopefully these guys can continue to develop and we will have May, Cosart and Colvin at the top of our rotation along with Cole Hamels and an older Roy Halladay.

  15. Yeah, but they must have pushed him to the OF for some reason. I assume he can’t handle 2B/SS.

  18. Brown’s been scuffling a bit recently. I think this will keep him in Reading for at least another month.

  19. Mitchell , at least, was able to supplant D’Arby Myers to become a regular at Clearwater. It seems he has become an OF full time. I would think his rate of HR per at bat is comparable to Overbeck. If they need to promote an OF to Reading, I don’t think it would be Gose due to lack of experience. So the normal progression of choices would say it would be Mitchell, Steve Susdorf, or Brian Gump. I would say yes. Mitchell played most all of the Spring Training games at Reading, and I thought he would go there to begin with. Mitchell hit very well at a point past the 2nd half of last season. Most of the naysayers are basing it upon a quick scanning of either some batting averages from early last season, or of the full season stats from last season.

  20. Finally Reading had a lineup that one could like last night 5/29. Even if the results were not much moving Galvis to the two hole in front of Brown and playing Rizzotti in the field at first and batting fifth gave hope that that prospects and new faces would get prominent hitting spots in the lineup and in the field rather that those tired old six year free agents long ago released by other organizations.

  21. Mentioned him earlier in the thread, but another solid outing last night by Jesus Sanchez. He never gets much talk, but I believe all his outings except one, he’s given up two or fewer runs. He gives his team a chance to win every time out. Does anyone know what pitches he throws and his FB velocity?

  22. One of the strangest half inning in baseball just happened in Port St. Lucie in the Clearwater v. St. Lucie game. With the game tied at 2-2 to start the bottom of the eight inning the leadoff hitter gets on for the Mets. The runner is sacrificed bunted to second. Tresher pitcher Tyler Cloyd throws two wild pitches in an attempt to intentionally walk the next batter allowing the lead run to score. Justin DeFratus come on to get out of the inning with the Thresher trailing 3-2 going into the 9th. Nothing like minor league baseball.

  23. Marfis: I am not bullish on Mitchell because he has not been a consistent hitter throughout his career. His 6-year pro career shows a .232 BA, .287 OBP, .392 SLG, .679 OPS. All of those are very poor for any decent prospect. Plus he has been switched to corner OF, where big-time hitting is the ticket to the big leagues. If he were a good-fielding middle infielder, his bat would be fine. But they shoved him out of there. As Bill pointed out he had 33 errors at 2B.

I might agree that he gets promoted simply because he is next in line, a model citizen who the Phils like as a person, and he has hit a few HRs. Maybe they will think, hey, he has a decent power stroke now, let’s see how he fares at Reading. But he will have to be a more consistent and dangerous hitter to really get on the prospect radar screen. And I can’t see him getting promoted ahead of a real prospect who needs the promotion to continue his development.

  24. After 5 innings Naylor has another shutout going in Altoona. That’s 20 straight innings for him without giving up a run.

  25. Rickey, Ya jinxed Naylor. Actually it looked like Rosy did most of the damage. He gave up two homers, one with 2 guys Drew put on base. A stat I’d like to see kept on MiLB is inherited runners scoring. For a reliever, this is a really important stat. In the Majors they don’t even include the stat in the box score. At least in the minors they show it.

  26. To Marfis, There are five outfielders in clearwater, four who have to share playing time. Sufdorf, Gump, Myers and Mitchell who played the infield but was moved to the outfield. So why is it that you say “Mitchell was able to supplant Myers to become a regular in Clearwater”, and not say he supplanted Myers, Gump or Sufdorf? seems like you are just picking with Myers. Sufdorf has 6 HR and Mitchell has 6 HR. Sufdorf, Gump and Mitchell are all older. Myers is 21. Myers has exceptional speed and that speed makes the other team nervous and they make errors which affects his stats. Mitchell should be promoted he is a good player, but If you are going to include Gump in the promotion Myers should be included in that mention also.
