A couple of news worthy items this Tuesday evening. First, Clearwater second baseman Fidel Hernandez was suspended for 50 games following a postive test for a performace enhancing substance, according to the AP. He been hitting .278 with 0 HR and 6 RBI as the starting 2B for the Threshers.
Pitcher John Ennis was activated and assigned to Reading after his year long recovery from Tommy John surgery. The 6’5 righty last played in 2008 for Lehigh Valley (he did pitch 0.1 innings last year) going 4-3 with a 3.67 ERA in 40 games (12 starts).
Oh, and Anthony Gose has 3 stolen bases this evening, giving him 10 on the year.
Two hits for Santana tonight – nice And what’s the deal with Colby Shreve? He started a week ago and today was extended stretch following Cosart. Just a surplus of starters at Lakewood?

Wouldn’t they use Schreve carefully…at first?
His numbers for such a few inns seem ok…but not many Ks.
Way to early to tell much.
After this long wait at least he’s pitched some innings OK.

I was scared shitless for a second when I saw the Hernandez news on CSNPhilly.com, thought it was Nick from the headline

I don’t know if it was mentioned anywhere, but Shreve had bone spurs removed from his elbow last June.

So, they filled out the Reading pitching staff with Ennis, but they still have no obvious choice to be the 5th starter. Flande , Aumont, Naylor, Worley, I say as 1,2,3,4, and the 5th would likely be a choice between Ennis (who has mostly relieved lately) and Ty Taubenheim. Most of the other Reading pitchers have settled into relief roles lately. Barring any further moves, or maybe including if they ever activate Josh Fogg, or call up a starter from HI-A.

That’s actually fairly bad news. I remember reading that bone spurs occur as a defense mechanism for the elbow and are a sign that TJ surgery is more a matter of WHEN and IF. If he’s having them after the original TJ surgery, there could be issues still with the elbow meaning a possible 2nd TJ surgery.
Unless, are bone spurs typical of guys coming back from TJ?

Does anyone know what happen to josh outman, can’t find him anywhere.

Josh Outman pitched fairly well in Oakland last year and had his year cut short with some pretty significant surgery, elbow ligament replacement surgery

or TJ surgery as it’s more well known!

Guess Outman should have stuck with his old mechanics? He was a guy I liked while he was here.
Bone spurs in the elbow can’t be a good thing…
I would be more excited about Gose having 10 walks on the year!

Wow, Hyatt and Hernandez throwing gems today.

Overbeck was 3 – 3 with a Dbl & HR & a BB. Nothing more to learn here. Gose also had 2 hits. Unfortunately, Hernandez faced a pitcher who threw a better gem.

Reading needs a fifth starter? How about Hyatt???

Hyatt should be moved up to Reading . How many pitchers have had better numbers than him so far ? 5 -1 with a 2.34 ERA ,great WHIP numbers
all those doubters about this guy even making the top 30 must be having second thoughts ?

Nope. Hyatt dominating the FSL at 24 impresses me just as much as dominating the NY-Penn League at 23. I ranked him #35, I feel comfortable with him there yet until he starts dominating age appropriate competition.

He is old for the league, so until he’s moved up to AA, doubters, me included, will exist.
I’m hopeful, but his pure stuff probably won’t play as well in AA.

thanks for the info on outman. hyatt to me has proved he can get out high school and college kids. do in double aa where you have veterans that will kill mistakes. then I will believe. its like a 14 year old pitching to 11 and 12 years olds.

I would like to see Hyatt get the opportunity at Reading rather then Ennis starting. You can have Garcia fill in at CLW or call up Hernandez from LKWD. I also agree Overbeck needs the go to Reading…370+ BA 8hrs and 21 rbs…They can send Barnes to CLW and play second and have Mintken play third.

Just in case no one has noticed…D Brown has a 2b and a homer tonight. I guess that projected power is starting to show.

Brown and Overbeck.
Two Men.
Two Leagues.
One Dream.
Coming soon to a big league city near you. Seriously, Overbeck makes a statement now night, after night after night. It’s HUGE!

On Brown, the extent of the power is breaktaking. He doesn’t have a grooved home run swing yet like Ryan Howard, but when he hits it, it goes as far as anyone else. I saw Howard crush a home run to right in a ST game this year and then Brown hit one and it must have gone another 70 farther than Howard’s bomb. If Dom Brown can hit for average (and it appears he can), there’s no telling what he could do.

Umm… are you really comparing Overbeck and Brown? Not that I haven’t been swept up by Overbeck fever, but Brown’s on a whole different level.
Also, let’s hope that they don’t continue in two different cities for too long. Overbeck needs to move up to Reading soon, if only to prove that this isn’t a mirage.

I am NOT comparing Overbeck to Brown. Did I say that? Just because I am excited about both prospects does not mean that I don’t appreciate their vast differences and the fact that Brown is far, far more likely than Overbeck to become a star in the majors. Still, what Overbeck is doing is exciting and may signal something real.

Sorry. I’ve had to temper my own enthusiasm for the guy. But that said, you did make it sound like they’d be starring in a buddy cop movie together. Except in this one, Overbeck is the older white one who wheezes “I’m getting to old for this.”

Yeah, I was just trying to have fun with the whole thing. Overbeck has a long way to go, whereas Brown appears to be on the cusp of big league baseball.

Mid June…or even after the EL All-Star game (July 14th). I think it will depend on their plan for him in 2011. If they expect him to contribute in the Majors, it will likely be sooner to give him for ABs against advanced pitching.
